Thanks baro-nite for that link. I was going to complain that I didn't want to deal with changing filters in those conditions but I will shut up. That guy was lugging around an 8x10! I'm going to have to step my game up a bit.

Best speed to photograph moving water

Thanks for the info. I should add that I will be shooting with my k-50 and a sigma 17-50. The majority of the shots will be at the wide end. And everything will be shot with a tripod so keeping times short enough to hand hold is not an issue.

Best speed to photograph moving water

I am taking a backpacking trip through the Zion narrows this week and need some help with my photo skills. I was hoping someone could advise me on a decent exposure length to set my camera at to have motion in the moving river. I know it depends on flow rate/ river speed but I'm just looking for a good range to be in because I don't know if 1/4 is sufficient or if I should be more in the multiple minute range. I also would like to know from anyone who has first hand knowledge of shooting in the Narrows, if a polarizer will be sufficient to lengthen my exposure or if I need to bring my 9 stop ND filter. Thanks.

Would you go to the Color Run with your Pentax WR gear?

I took some photos of the Color Run in Vegas. I didn't run in it and only shot from the sidelines. That powder gets on and in everything. I blew colors out of my nose for the remainder of the day. It was a fun event but I don't think I will have a camera with me next time.

Question about Sony Raw file quality

I own a Sony a6000 and enjoy it quite a bit. I only use it for casual pictures because I only have the kit lens but I like the quality of the files. You should take a look at Trey Ratcliff"s photos The Photography of Trey Ratcliff. He uses the Sony A7 line of cameras and thoroughly processes the files. I like his style, but even if you don't, you can still see the amount of information he has to play around with.

Advice on Star/Milky Way photogrphy

I am spending a couple of days in Utah this week and since there will be a new moon I am going to try some star photography. I am planning on using my K-01 and a Rokinon 8mm to do some interval shooting. My first question is for recommended settings including ISO and exposure and also for the interval shooting menu settings. I also would like to know if the back screen remains on the entire time the camera is shooting and how that will affect the battery life. I would like to make a short video out of the images, so I would assume I need the battery to last for quite a few shots. I also have a K-50, but think the battery on the K-01 might be a better choice for more shots. I plan on using the K-50 with a Sigma 16-50 2.8 for long exposure single shots. If anyone with star shooting experience can give any advice I would really appreciate it.

Solid Hiking Tripod

I have been looking for a good hiking tripod and need the forum's experience to aid me. I am going to be hiking and camping the Narrows in Zion National Park. I own a Manfrotto tripod with a Kirk ball head and I love it but it is way too heavy to carry on this hike. I have been looking at the MeFoto Backpacker tripod and the Manfrotto off road tripod. Both of these are under $150, which is the budget I would like to stay around. The Silk Spirit 150 has a $60 rebate making it $60, so that is very appealing if anyone has good experiences with this tripod. So I am asking if anyone has good or bad experiences with any of these three tripods, or can recommend something else they like better. I need something light and stable enough to be used in low level running water. I would like to keep it reasonably cheap because I have a solid tripod I use for most needs. I know I can't get light, stable and cheap but it only needs to be reasonably stable and can be of questionable quality because it will only be used for rare overnight hikes. Any input would help, thanks.

whch single focal length lens?

If I had to go with only one I would get the limited 21mm. But with the cheap prices of the DA35 and DA50, I would go with the 15 limited and the 50 (or 35). With those two you have a nice range and both make for a very small kit that you can carry anywhere.

Wow, that is a shocking difference. I have read about focus breathing but assumed it would create a very minor change in field of view. I look forward to seeing your infinity shoots.

Best choice for handheld telephoto lens

Thanks for all of the great info. I am leaning toward picking up a used DA-L 55-300 for now and saving for something a little more robust. I never would have thought of the F or FA 300 but they look intriguing. The DA* 60-250 looks amazing but it sure does look more like a tripod type of lens. I usually pack a tripod, so I'm not fully against a bigger lens but with wildlife, sometimes there is no time for setup. Either way, I suppose at the price of a used 55-300, there is no reason not to have one in my bag. I just ordered a Sigma 17-50 2.8 (Please no negative info because it's already been purchased :) ) so the 55-300 would be perfect fit.

Best choice for handheld telephoto lens

I'm looking for the forums advice on your favorite choice of lens for handheld telephoto shooting. I am in the market for a telephoto lens, zoom or prime, that I can use while hiking and will be practical shooting handheld. I am looking at the DA 200mm 2.8. It's a bit out of my price range but looks like it is a solid choice. I would like to hear people experiences using this lens without a tripod, if the size and weight is acceptable for handheld shooting. I would also like advice on less expensive options and also anything a little longer that is still manageable without a tripod. This lens will be primarily for shooting wildlife while hiking. Thanks for the advice.

B&H phone order for 55-300 HD WR for $379

I just saw a B&H web add that listed the Pentax 18-135 with a "phone only" special price, no price listed. When you click the add it sends you to B&H with regular web price showing. It would be nice to have an area where people can list the "phone only" prices. I have always ordered over the web, thinking it was easier for both parties, and now I feel like I have missed out on better prices.

I have the 50mm F1.7 SMC A on my K-01 and it works great. I usually give it a couple of stops, say around 2.8 and it is amazingly sharp. Great lens for the money.

Does the free 50 pack of paper count towards the rebate or do you need to actually purchase another pack so it shows on the receipt?

Can Anyone in Vegas help Me?!?!?!?

I live in Vegas and looked into renting Pentax for a trip to the Breeder's Cup. There are shops that rent lenses, but for Pentax you usually need to pay shipping to have them delivered to the shop. You are better off renting directly from a rental service. I used cameralensrentals.com and they were great. You can find many other on here that have good things to say about that service. Good luck.

Mine fell off about a month ago. I used a small amount of super glue to put it back on. Seems to be working fine. There are many people that have had this happen to them. It is too bad this is such a common problem on an otherwise well made camera.

Why Lightroom?

Lightroom is great for all of your global adjustments and organization. It can do local adjustments but photoshop offers much more control. I use lightroom to do all of my color, contrast and spotting. Then I open photos in photoshop where I can add masks and have many layers. Many photos only go to lightroom and that's all they need.

Most useful focal length 35,40 or 50

I am buying my first prime and I would like to keep it under $200.I am choosing between the DA35, 40xs or the DA50. I have done all of the research on IQ and speed. My question to the forum is: for everyday walking around photography which focal length would be your preferred choice if it is the only lens you are carrying? You can factor in lens quality if you really like one over the other, but I feel they are all high quality so the choice now is focal length.

I see that the Pentax web site has dropped the prices on the 35 and 50 primes. I was wondering if this is a markdown from Pentax and you will be following their lead and reducing your price. I like buying my equipment from B&H. I have always had a great experience with your company. The 50 prime for $120 is too hard to pass up.
