There is a livingsocial deal on metal prints from this company. I've been looking to get some metal prints, but am cautious as I haven't heard of this company before. The deal is really good though. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I am realizing that I probably set the bar too low at $200. More like an entry-level DSLR would probably make sense $500-600. In that case I'm guessing a lot more people would just shell out for a used copy in good condition (or 2 or 3) and get it CLA'd.
Just remember though, I think the assumption that there will always be a supply of cheap, good-condition vintage cameras is a little optimistic. I would guess that the market right now is about as high as the supply would get, as most people that are going to switch from film to digital have already done so. The remaining supply of "I found this in my grandfather's attic" might remain steady for a while, but not forever.

Quick question, the screws on the back of this lens are really tight. What is the best way to loosen them? Normally I would spray some WD-40, but that is probably not a good idea for a lens.

This is why I wanted to try film in the first place. I have several nice MF lenses and if I use film and APS-C, It is like doubling the number of lenses I have, because they have different fields of view.
Please don't turn this into a thread about the lack of FF DSLR.

Which is what seems to appeal to most people. I meant "would you buy a brand new (model whatever) if Pentax literally pulled the schematic off the shelf and put it back into production?"

Kind of like cable television. I get over 100 channels and watch about 10, but it is easier for the cable company to just offer the whole package as a take-it-or-leave-it kind of thing.

I apologize in advance to the spouse of whomever buys this. No vacation this year.

Interesting discussion, I'm surprised at how many no's there are. It seems that people are operating under the assumption that there is an infinite supply of used cameras that are in decent enough shape to only need a cleaning and they'll work for another 30 years.
I guess that anyone here that is actually interested in film probably already has several film bodies and only needs to maintain them.

My thought was that it costs $60-100 dollars to get an old camera CLA'd in most cases, and as boriscleto pointed out, parts are going to become harder to come by as time goes on. So, as more and more old cameras get tossed out or scavenged for parts, they will become harder to come by. At least with a new model, it would probably come with a warranty, and you would have a big head start on longevity.
To clarify, you can buy a 'for parts' ME super for ~$20 inc. shipping on ebay, get it CLA'd for ~$70 (shipping?). So $90 for an old one or $200 for a brand new one with warranty.
Almost definitely not going to happen, just curious as to the responses. ---------- Post added 03-15-14 at 09:55 AM ---------- Also, just about any film student needs to take B&W as a first class. If you were buying a film camera for class, wouldn't you rather buy one that you knew was under warranty in case it broke right before your final project?

Given how many people seem to still be using film cameras, and how many repair threads there are, I'm wondering whether Pentax could make any money selling new film cameras.
I'm not even talking about developing a new one, just re-releasing an old design, like the ME, K1000, LX...
Respond whether you would pay for one if it was ~$200 or less, and what model you would like to see.

It now clicks. I guess just working it loosened up whatever grit was in there. I will still probably clean it though. Thanks for the tips.

Well, the whole point of trying to get one for $3 is that I don't want to spend $100.

I just bought an ME super on ebay for $3 because the mirror was stuck. Thanks to all the useful information here and elsewhere, that was a relatively easy fix. The curtain just needed to be nudged down. However, after that happened, the shutter fired once and now won't cock. The winder just keeps winding and the shutter never resets.
I've seen several threads and blogs on this (including the ME Super 3 common problems page), and I'm pretty sure that the lever is stuck and needs to be cleaned. I don't have a problem with disassembly and tinkering, but I really don't want to get into soldering. Is there anything else to do besides the complete disassembly?

I just picked up a copy of this lens for $50 because the aperture blades are slow, but that should be fine. My question is that at 3.5 (wide open) the aperture ring doesn't really click into place, it just kind of stops. Is this normal?
Thanks

I would have suggested using a longer lens and getting further away so that the sun would appear larger relative to the people.

I see that the K version of this lens is much better reviewed than the M version. My question is to anyone who has ever owned both at the same time or close to it. Do you really see a huge difference?

I've been looking at film bodies online and came across a few ME SE's. Is there any real difference besides the brown leather?

I understand cutting costs, but again, what does it cost to produce a plastic lens hood, $1.00? Even if they hid that in the price of the lens it wouldn't matter. Would you really be fine spending $499.99 for a camera with lens but walk away from $500.99?

My thought was more along the lines of somebody buying a Pentax kit, taking a few pictures in direct sunlight, deciding they don't like the quality and returning it in favor of Nikon or Canon.
It's kind of like how Apple builds customer loyalty by doing all those little things that maybe add a few cents to the product, but really make them stand out from other manufacturers.
Plus lens hoods are a great place to plaster your logo in really big font.
