I was fortunate enough to be at an island way out in the north of Norway close to Lofoten. Testing out my LEE BigStopper and the lighting was just perfect. We did get stuck on the island as the ferry back didn't have enough space for us giving us more time to shoot.

We stopped at a resting place in the middle of the night for some sleep, when we saw something lighting up in the horizon. Had to test some long exposures to see if we got something - and we really did!

K-3 good for video?

No, it's not just a limitation. When playing back the recorded video it delivers full HD via the HDMI. So there's no problem for the HDMI to do the job, it's just that it will not do it while recording or just viewing live from sensor.

K-3 good for video?

I like the K3 for video but there is one thing that really bugs me - I don't understand why there is no full quality on the HDMI while shooting? I am used to have a bigger monitor connected with other cameras for easy focusing, but this is not possible with K3 as it gives a very low resolution video on the HDMI while recording.

I would really wish for a firmware update that solves this.

Except if you use the green button in M-mode, then the EV will affect the measuring.

Focusing Screen for K3

I am going to buy a focusing screen for my K3 and I wonder what to buy.

On my K10 I had an S-Type with grid from focusingscreen.com but I found that it god quite dark on lenses with F4 or slower. I see that KatzEye has the option to use OptiBrite. The drawback being that the split may disturb the spot metering on the camera? Is this true?

Anyone tested both or either of these and what are your experiences?

Diagnistic software for K10D

My trusted K10D has suddenly stopped working after just 22000 exposures. At first it was just the mirror and shutter that stopped moving, but now it sounds like there's a problem with the SR on the sensor. It sounds like it tries to move it but like if there's a motor not working as it should.

Had it in for repairs but they just told me it was too expensive to fix so I got it back.

I have now ordered the K3 but I would love to try bringing the K10 back to life. I have the Service Manual and I want to start trying to find out if there is a chance to fix it. In this Service Manual there is a reference to a diagnostic software

QuoteQuote:

Preparation of Adjustments
[Required equipment]
Programmed software for 76830 (Supply with CD-ROM)
Computer (PC)
SD card 3 pieces (16MB or above)
SD card reader or USB cable (I-USB17) … For connecting with PC

Does anyone know if it's possible to download this software anywhere?

I'm so sorry for the delay and the lack of answers from me - was away from any internet for a while. The lens is on its way across the Atlantic and should be in safe hands of Kozlok within a few days.

I have now had the Nifty-Fifty for a bit over a week and have got the chance to take some photos with it - What a great lens!

I will be taking a few more before I pass it on but here is the first batch. You can view more as a set on Flickr.

I have now tested with the uncombined files and see that there is actually a difference. I have attached two photos showing the difference. One with the whole scene and one 100% crop.

So, WHEN I buy the K3 - I will shoot bracketing as I'm used to - until the embedded RAW will be supported 100% in Ligthroom

Lightroom sees the one exposure for previewing but will contain all of the three combined for dynamic range - as I see it.

I would really like to confirm this - Anyone with K3 that can upload RAW files of the same high contrast scene using

1. Bracketing 3 single RAW files using +/- 2 EV steps
2. Single HDR RAW using +/- 2 EV steps

I would really like to test this in Lightroom to see if there's a difference or not.

Here is a 100% crop showing a bit of noise - will this noise be any different with the same raw file uncombined and then merged into HDR?

I don't have the K3 and I don't have PDCU, but from what I have tested of the different HDR raw files I have found on this forum, there is a lot more dynamics in the HDR RAW file than in a single RAW file. From what I see I get out of these files I see a big difference than editing a single file - the responce in dynamics is very similar to what I now find when shooting three files and combining into HDR with my K10D.

If the dynamic range in the K3 is this large, then it is really a great camera.

I downloaded the HDR file from STAGNANT

and got this out of it in Lightroom. Could you try to show me how this is done better with uncombined files? I would really like to know if this is the truth, that the HDR file isn't the same as three different shots combined.

I use Lightroom, so here's the workflow:

When I shoot three raw: Import to lightroom -> Select the HDR images -> Merge to HDR using HDR Soft -> Make adjustments in Develop.
When I shoot one HDR RAW file: Open in Lightroom, Adjust in Develop.

I don't have to uncombine them at all. I don't believe you have to do that to edit in Photoshop either as you can make the same adjustments in Camera Raw while opening it in PS.

Yes, of course, but I shoot everything in RAW and have full control of the final output of the dynamics in the picture when editing. SD cards are cheap ;)

Isn't the size of the HDR image the same as three normal images? I shoot a lot HDR (on K10D) and I believe if I shoot three single RAW files for combining them in post will take up the same space on my SD card as if I shoot one combined HDR file in cam. This saves me a lot of time in post since the files are already combined - and no drawbacks since the space on card is the same - or am I mistaken?

This is good to know alamo5000. I will have to see how my budget vs the real need is when I get the camera. I will keep your offer in mind - thanks!

This is the exact answer I got from them earlier. Guess they are not so open to make a great variety of housings.

I am planning to buy the K3 very soon and I would love to have an Under Water Housing for it. Does anybody know if there is such a thing?

I see that Ikelite had housings for K7/K5 but these are discontinued.

Have you tried turning off NR? I had an epiphany on my K10 when I turned it off for long exposures. Used to wait as long as the exposure it self for preview but just a second with the NR off. And hardly any difference in quality...

Fotodiox has an adapter that works on the Nikon mount but it will not work on newer lenses without an aperture ring. I have tried this and i get stuck at the smallest aperture .

Here's the link to the adapter on Amazon
