Portrait lens comparison?

Just bought a DA 50mm 1.8f from Amazon $133. I know it's not the best lens, but I just tried it yesterday and am very happy. Even with the lighting not being optimal, I took pictures of my daughter and boyfriend before their winter formal. They turned out pretty darn good. Being 50 mm it's really best for head shots. Looking to win that 31mm that is out there for the 3M post! I'll add an example photo later as I'm on my iPad and can't figure out how to add pics.

Yes, it' stun to take out those old lenses and basically be in pure manual mode, but then see the results instantly rather than waiting for the film to develop. That's one of the reasons I bought a Pentax DSLR. So I could use all my 70's/80's lenses. Just need the adaptor to convert the screw on mount.

So I realize this is too late, but I just had a thought, tested it, and it worked.
Any of you remember those cassette tape mics with the on/off switch? Yup, you're right. It works!
When you turn on your camera, it will autofocus, then, when you are ready, turn the mic to "ON" and take your shot.
If you need to auto focus again you either have to turn the camera off/on, or upplug/replug in the mic.
I know - this is about as redneck as you can get . . .

novicegartner - Yes, I've played with my 30+ year old lenses and they work quite well actually. Just put your mind back to when you were using them on your film SLR. Manual mode is the best, but the camera will try it's best to set the shutter speed and sensitivity. When using an older lens, you will see that you cannot adjust the aperture - you should see "---" Just set that on your lens. I use a 200mm zone with a doubler for many shots and wind up setting it to f 3.5 for the most part since it's got a bunch of lens to go through and get real dark, real fast. And of course, you'll have to do the focusing yourself too. I'm using screw on lenses with a bayonet adaptor I bought about 20 years ago when I went for pure manual SLR to "Auto' SLR. I use the lens from that camera for close ups and macros as it has the bayonet style and it has an "A" setting for the aperture and it works just fine. Again, manual focus. Keep playing, that's the only way to learn.

And the tumble I mentioned was a toss from a jeep fender about 15 feet into the air, right onto a rock, then a rest in a small stream. I was shocked we got it to work at all.

Shutter speed using flash

Kozloc. I believe you are spot on! That explains it. I usually don't use Auto for anything unless I hand over the camera to my wife or just want a quick snapshot. Your comments make perfect sense.

Jim, I typically use my 30 year old flash also. Same one I've used for the old Pentax SLR 35mm film camera and K10D

I guess I was just checking to see if there was anything wrong with the camera. S my recommendation for others wanting to just do some snapshots is to use the P mode and set the speed to 1/100. Tried it on several quick shots and the pictures are great. And not blurry.

Thanks everyone!

Shutter speed using flash

Thanks Jim and all who replied. I'm using the 18 - 135mm Auto Pentax lens. Put in Auto mode and on Auto flash. Actually I tried all combinations I could think of. The only consistent thing here is that whatever the camera calculated to use WITHOUT the flash it used WITH the flash. Almost like it was using the flash as a fill only. If I program the shutter speed at a "normal" speed such as 1/100 and took the picture it remained as such. I guess I'm used to the K10 that would set the shutter speed at 1/60 for every shot in Auto mode. Just seems odd that the camera doesn't seem to recognize it can use the flash to come up with a faster shutter. It seems to really like 1/15, but will choose all the way down to .6 seconds which will naturally blur whatever image you are trying to capture is a tripod is not used. Seems like this may be a firmware issue? Has everyone updated to v 1.04? Maybe this is a new bug intro? Other than this just buggy thing which I can. Overcome, I love the camera.

FYI - The flash does not come up on demand. You have to push the flash button to make it come up.

Shutter speed using flash

I just bought a new K30 and used it all weekend. Works great and im impressed so far. I was testing how the flash works and noticed the shutter speed remains the same regardless of using or not using the flash. In Auto mode in a dark room it shoots the pic way too slow for normal flash shooting - at 1/6 or whatever it thinks it needs without the flash. I used P mode and manually set it to 1/100 a more typical setting. The pictures are fine, but I would think the camera would have a default setting of 1/60 at the slowest. Could I have a setting wrong somewhere?

FYI - I downloaded the latest firmware before I used it. v 1.04

Hello,

Been a amateur photographer since before high school. Always had a Pentax SLR. Bought a K10D a while back as my first dSLR and loved it. I've had to fix it after it took an offroading tumble. Worked for another couple years, but was not taking consistent pics so I just upgraded to a K30.
