My daily, a 1993 Toyota Celica ST182.

Its a standard 2.0L Twin Cam ST182 (UK/euro model) but with the ST185 Bonnet and aftermarket alloys both fitted by the previous owner. I believe it also has the Japanese/import spec front bumper and fog lights.

Celica B&W by Robert Seymour, on Flickr

What I like:
- Quite practical for a 2-door coupe, big boot and fold down rear seats.
- Good mix of speed/overtaking ability and MPG (UK) ~32mpg average and more recently around 35mpg
- Reliable (so far) - all the electrics still work and feels good considering its ~20yrs old and 100k miles+
- Great value
- Excellent PAS, great feel and relatively heavy compared to modern cars.
- Nice size, feels smaller than it looks, when driving.
- You can fit two adults in the back, just.
- Pop up Headlights
- Sounds great at full pelt, even with stock exhaust.
- Happily does my ~40mile round commute every day sitting in traffic, open roads etc
- Cloth seats with very good back/bolster support and nice driver focused interior layout

What I don't like
- Not much at all.
- Could be more comfortable over rough roads but its still pretty good for a sporty car, especially for its age.
- Torque Steer, ~160bph in a front wheel car from the '90s is never going to be that great, only really noticeable in low gears and accelerating hard.
- Could have a bit more torque, being a N/A twin-cam all the power is up the top end.
- Gets very hot inside the cabin in the sun, like a greenhouse and right now the air-con is not working.

Previous car history was a mix of classic Triumphs (Dolomite Sprint, 1850HL, TR7 and Acclaim) then a Rover 100 (Metro) so the Celica feels light years ahead!

I liked the FA43 on the K-3II, I loved it with the MZ-S (Perfect combo BTW) and I love it with the K-1....

Its just the best walk around lens, if it had WR then it would be perfect!

K-1 with the FA*24

A few years ago, I had a decent copy of the FA* 24mm f2 AL with a K-3II, and very much liked the combination although I found the croped angle of view (~35mm) did not suit me that well.

I really liked the build, speed, sunstars/lack of flare and just general look of the photos. Yes you have to stop down to ~f11 for corner to corner sharpness but I would anyway for landscape. My old copy was very sharp from wide open which I never had an issue with.

Now I have a K-1, I have searched but did not find too many samples of photos with this combination. I have a D-FA28-105 and FA43 which get the most use on it, but looking for a wide-angle.
I have looked at the FA20, Voigtlander 20mm f3.5, FA20-35 f4 etc but I think the FA*24 should be ideal.

What are peoples real-world experience with the FA*24 on the full-frame K-1?

Cheers, Rob

I have the FA20-35 and its a lovely lens, a nice normal walk around on APS-C (30mm -52mm roughly) but it really shines on Film/FF.

I don't see any reason for a new D-FA Limited to keep the Aperture Ring/Screwdrive. Pentax needs to move on and keep up to date with the market, yes I love that I can use my FA43 with my MZ-S, which is lovely but its not going to keep them in business.

I think a ~20mm f4 and ~135mm f2.8 would round off an excellent collection with the FA31, FA43 and FA77.

Give them internal motor and WR and be done with it, at the expense of ultimate speed.

Just picked up a DA*300 for my K-1, what a dream lens! I was originally looking at a DA*200 but I knew I needed something longer for for the F1 GP so found this at a dealer for a decent price.

Its actually smaller than I imagined, and very usable to hand hold for a few hours, like at the F1 GP over the weekend.

I plan on adding a DA*200 and DA*55 too at some point....

One of the first test shots, pin sharp focus on the Cows nose, showing all the flies!

And a big test at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix at the weekend! AF was quick (apart from when it missed and racked all the way back, an AF Limited would be ideal) and AF-C tracking was not too bad at all I found.

I've had the following on the MZ-5N/MZ-S or the K-01/K-3II.

FA*24 f2 - Great on crop as a fast ~35mm, excellent sharpness in the center wide open, only 'good' stopped down all over. Poor lens hood design and easily scratched.

FA20-35 f4 - Excellent wide zoom, very compact and light. Sharp pretty much at all apertures and zoom range although quite a lot of aberrations wide open @20mm.

FA43 f1.9 - Excellent, my favorite lens.

FA50 f1.7 - Great small and fast prime, only sold as I used the FA43 f1.9 Limited more.

FA135 f2.8 - Very compact for a fast short telephoto prime, somewhat nervous bokeh in some situation but very sharp from wide open. Again some aberrations wide open but easy to fix in PP.

All 4 had quite fast AF, the FA20-35 and FA50 especially but all a little noisy as you would expect from screw-drive.

K-1 or KP for portraiture
Posted By hoopsontoast
Replies: 29
I have to say, going from a K-3II to a K-1, and doing lots of portraits for work, I found the shallower depth of field when using a wider aperture actually a hindrance, as I was having to stop down to f4 or smaller to get any amount of the face in focus.
This was offset though with the exceptional higher ISO performance of the K-1, and the KP looks to be almost as good now though.
