My husband bought me the Kool Aid and forced me to drink it. After pointing out a great deal to my daughter who wanted a dslr, my dear spouse assumed that I wanted it. Say hello to my new Nikon D-7000, kit lenses Nikkor AF 18-140 f 3.5 and NIkkor AF 55-300 f4.5! Although I have been a true Pentaxian for 35+ years, I drank. That's okay - I'll use my own money to buy my first prime and maybe a flash unit for my K-30.

This also happened to me several weeks ago...but I know how I did it. While in preview I accidentally touched a setting that flipped the image. Don't have the K-30 in front of me right now to tell you what exactly I touched. But I do remember that it was while I was in preview.

Good to know. I have been researching different processing programs trying to decide on one. Can't believe everything you read on the Internet, but I don't have enough knowledge to know the difference yet.

I am not a Lightroom user - yet. In my research I read somewhere that the lens info is not available for jpegs in LR. Several different programs were suggested to retrieve the info. The most popular seemed to be PhotoME. A free download that is able to retrieve the Exif data from jpegs. Good Luck!

I just ordered mine from B & H. I saw the lower price at Amazon, but I thought this forum was about supporting the photo store vendors? :o

Picture #2 of the bird is a great set up and shot. I did a double-take; the beak looks like it is pointing in two different directions.

Great pictures! Both of the iced camera and the results. But I am still afraid to take my K30 out in the rain or snow. Any "real" testing on what the extremes are that the WR bodies and lenses are capable of withstanding?

Phoneman, I have had several Pentax SLR film cameras over the last 30 years. For the last 6-7 years I have used a digital p & s (Sony). I wanted to go back to photography as opposed to taking pictures so I began doing research. I bought the K-30 in September and do not regret it for one minute. I discovered that a digital SLR was more difficult, for me, to learn. Too many options! This forum has been INVALUABLE! As a learning resource it can't be beat. After reading this post - https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-pentax-beginners-corner-q/247120-true-...tart-here.html I turned my camera to manual, decided on my ISO for the day and started shooting! I have had a great time! The K-30 was a great choice for me because it has the features of a high-end camera, without the price of a professional. I have many lenses, auto and manual, so staying with Pentax was a given. My one mistake was not being more aware of the kits offered. I bought the wrong one that included the DA-L lenses. But no worries! Today I bought my first WR lens, the DA 18-135 WR. The last few weeks with all the beautiful snow in New Hampshire I have regretted not having a WR lens to fit on the WR K-30. Good Luck!

Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions and input. I think my choices narrow down to Lightroom or Elements. I have read the first of Kelby's books on Digital Photography and agree that he is a valuable resource. If his book on Lightroom is recommended, maybe that should be the direction I take. Thank you all again for helping in the decision! I like the comment "Pick one, learn it and stick with it".

I have read that the Pentax supplied Silky Pix is very difficult to use, so I have not even loaded it. I tend to not delete photos, even the bad ones, so a management feature is fine with me. My needs right now are not much. I have read that all photos should have some pp to include sharpening and wb at a minimum. I have Photoshop at work, and have used it on some photos, but I start moving sliders and adding layers, get totally lost, and then scrap the whole edit. One of the features that I like about Fastone, which maybe other programs have as well, is the ability to see the un-processed file to compare to what you have done. Makes it helpful. But I feel like I am missing something using Fastone. A free program versus a paid-for program cannot be as useful. I am mostly photographing landscape here in NH.

Happy Thanksgiving All!

I bought my K-30 in September. It is my first DSLR and I am still learning. This forum has been great! I know this subject has been discussed in many threads but it gets very overwhelming for me. I am very computer and software literate and know the technical aspect of photography. But I despise working with graphics and I include post processing in the general term of "graphics". It has been said in many threads that you must post process and I do agree with that; I have been able to save several shots since I am shooting RAW+. I have been using Fastone and I'm not sure it's the right program for me. I don't mind spending money for a decent program. What is the most user-friendly pp program for someone who does not like pp? I know everyone will have their own opinions, so please, if you can, include your reasons why you feel it is the most user-friendly. Thanks!

Confirm which lenses actually come with the kit. Unless Costco has put together their own package, the standard Pentax K-30 kit with 18-55 and 50-200 lenses are not WR lenses, they are DA L. When I purchased my K-30 several weeks ago from Best Buy their website left off the "L". I thought I was getting DA lenses. I do agree about the ease of use of the controls on the Pentax.

Dusty, You are so right about the extremes! I did change my meter to center weighted and that has helped. I have been mostly taking photos mostly in the 'yard' - 8 acres of field surrounded by forest and mountains! I have been doing a lot of experimenting; changing settings and modes.

Savoche - I have never used the histogram, but will certainly look in to it. The screen view is not very reliable - brightening it enough to see dark areas washes out the light areas.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Until this morning I had not upload any images to my computer. After uploading, the pictures are not as bad as I thought. It seems the preview display is very dark, but the actually photos are not. Many of the images that I took are strongly back-lit, so the subject is not good, but that's to be expected. As for why use "Green Mode" - being new to a dslr I want to experiment to see abilities and limitations of the Auto/Scene modes. Being a casual photographer I don't always want to stop and think about my settings. I also noticed that the ISO was set to 3200. Changing it to auto has helped. Having the ability to change so many options - like ISO, metering mode, etc is very new to me. I will check what metering mode I am set at and continue to experiment! I will also change my display brightness to more accurately reflect what I see on my computer. That should take care of this issue for now, but I am sure there will be others, so thanks again!

Hi All, I have had my K-30 about one week now. I am new to digital, but have had film for many years and fully understand, shutter, aperture, iso etc. I have been using the kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200) on Auto or Scene mode. The shots are coming out very dark, with the subject unable to be seen. Today I used TV, AV and SV modes with much better results. Using Auto mode I set the Exposure Compensation to +3. The background was a little washed out, but the subject was okay. I would like to be able to reliably use Auto/Scene Modes without having to change the EV, after all that is what they are for! I have not changed any of the default settings. Any ideas on which settings I should be looking at to change. I have been reading the manual, but have not yet found anything that would apply. Thanks for any input.
