One of the beautiful period style home in Oysterville framed by some of those famous cedars. A very placid place.

Does it rain much in Astoria? The precip figures run from 67" to 85" a year. That's talking about some serious rain, folks. The upside is that it washes away the effects of the salt air. The downside is that it washes away just about everything else, like houses which are known to slide downhill in our own peculiarly greasy mud which helps this to happen. One knucklehead builder put in a development on a hillside. One house slid downhill onto the HS athletic field.
And then there is the rust. Ran across this fellow today. Shoulda had the 02 zoom. I love that lens.

Over on the Washington side of the Columbia this afternoon and found that the wild peas are in bloom. These pretty little rascals are all over the place. And the fruit, the pea itself, is edible but tiny. I also installed a nice new 27" monitor and the resolution and color capture of the Q-S1 has improved. :D
The picture is with the Pentax 01 prime lens which finally arrived after being mailed in April.

One of the picture book homes in Oysterville. It looks like the owner has taken a break from their gardening chores but left their pail behind. And a nice yellow house with a stoop just right for summer sitting.

This small and relatively old community also has the distinction of having started out pretty isolated. But even though it was isolated it was a group of like-minded people. To wit: just one church. I guess you either attended that one or went to join the damned. It is open to the public on most days. Fortunately vandals are too lazy to drive out this far to desecrate church property. The town has somewhat the air of being its own reality. I'll make a trip back if we ever get some days with sunshine.

Oysterville is more than parking lots and oyster middens. Here's a shot of some old cedars.

We are a coastal city. Here is a retired pilot boat, the Peacock, replaced by the Astoria and helicopters in accommodating weather. Note the wavy stern metal. This old boat was at the end of its useful life. It is parked in the parking lot of the Columbia Maritime Museum which is a big deal here in town. Columbia River Maritime Museum | Astoria, Oregon The second is Pier 39, now home to a saloon and a coffee shop along with a few nautical shops was once home to Bumble Bee Tuna. It is safe to say that Astoria has its finest days behind it.

I like to think of it as folk art. Some guy was thinking about the fence he had to build and he may have seen a notice in our local paper that the PD was selling bikes they had picked up over the years. Or whatever. Who knows? But here it is, out here in the countryside, just a fun construction by a fellow who maybe had too much time on his hands one winter.
I love it :)

Riding around back in the farmland around here just seeing what there was. Ran across an original fence, a couple of nice old cars and a tree in sweet bloom. Here they are,

Will he ever stop? You know, I've asked myself the same question. This is Seaside beach at the north end of town with the tide out and the sun directly ahead.

I swung by the West Mooring Basin Wednesday afternoon. This little camera does good color and detail, it punches well above it's weight, especially in good light.
The town I live in, Astoria, has a lot of working fishermen. This, along with the other local trade of lumbering, is a terribly dangerous way to earn a living. There are lots of fishing boats around here and they all have to cross the Columbia Bar to get to open water. Check out the Columbia Bar on YouTube. This area is known as the Graveyard of the Pacific for good reason. The US Coast Guard has its rescue training school across the river and other countries all over the world send their folks here to learn how to rescue in the most terrible conditions to be found. And that Columbia Bar can change from placid to horrendous in a matter of minutes. You can be damned sure I am not interested in going out there. You Tube |

We love the pilots who bring the ships across the bar, fair weather or foul. The bar pilots get the ships to Astoria where the river pilot takes over from Astoria to Idaho if be needs be. And we really love "The Coasties" who will come out and save your ass when you are clawing your way off the lee shore and every other rational person is at home by the fire. The fishing boats do not cross the bar with a pilot.

I am with you guys that the HDR as exhibited in these photos makes the image worse not better. I find it useful on another camera but it just does not seem to work on this Q-S1. I will try it on some other scenes, and show them to you guys as punishment for being so helpful. OK, I will show them to you as a part of a continuing investigation of HDR on the Q-S1.
Thanks for the input.

I am assuming the Sony has better image stabilization for two reasons: 1) more recently developed, and 2) it is five axes (Full-frame camera with 5-axis image stabilization | a7 II | Sony US) which pretty much covers it all. I believe the Zeiss lens also has built-in stabilization. I do not believe that Q-S1 is so gifted. The Sony is the better camera, the Pentax is the more convenient and fun.
I also believe the Sony has better color and detail. But I am talking a more expensive camera with a more expensive Zeiss lens, 55mm f1.8, which is a very, very good lens (Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8). Each camera has its place.
Regard: first photo is from the Q-S1, second from the Sony. Sony focus is off because I did not reset it from center point to grid. The Pentax is grid so it is in focus. I make it a point now to carry the Pentax. It is just so easy to slip into a pocket and punches so far above its weight. Comparison will be difficult as the both images are compressed for uploading.
Sorry to have been so long-winded but I did want to lay out the what and why vis a vis the Pentax and the Sony.
Cheers

I'm new here having the Q-S1 for less than a week. I am opting for native 40.5 mm filters. A pretty good set can be had for less than US$20. Currently I have the 02 and 06 with an 01 on its way from Japan. I'll get the filter kits (UV, CPL,ND) for each and not have to be switching filters. I do like working with a CPL to cut the haze and make those colors pop. Otherwise it is the UV for lens protection.

I have not been following the Q prices for more than a month or so. That's the period of time I had been researching the camera and shopping for one with the larger sensor. I wound up with a Q-S1 in very good condition with the 02 and 06 lenses, software, battery and charger. No SD card but I had one, of course. I immediately upgraded the 02 firmware to 1.01. It has been good on color and detail for such a small sensor. The whole package came to USD$338 plus shipping. I have an 01 lens on the way and that will have its firmware upgraded also. Very glad to have the camera and satisfied with the sale price.

Driving around the back roads in my area and ran across this couple out for a joy ride. I bet the cops pull this car over.
