Thanks for this, Stephen! Makes you wonder if such an ad machine will be reinstated for the upcoming half-frame launch. I had no idea Steve Irwin made Pentax commercials. I guess they were only for an Australian audience?

Yes, Mike, your other photo is a Redtail. Note the distinct dark belly band on the white underparts. - Jack

Hi, Mike. Nice shots. But your bird is a Northern Harrier hatched last year. The white "bum" and low flight pattern are give-aways.

Nice shot, Angky. Almost all hummingbird species lay two eggs which is why the nest has to be made of expandable material such as lichen, moss and spider web. Might be worth checking out this nest in a couple of days to see if the 2nd egg has been laid. - Jack

Mike - When Trumpeters move through BC in early April, they often choose harvested grain fields with leftover stubble and seed that provides more to eat. Ring-necked Ducks stick to water so they often would not be in the same habitat during migration as the swans. However, Trumpeters also nest on backwater lakes and ponds so that is where their ranges would intersect. - Jack

Great shots of the Ring-necks! They are one of our most common breeding ducks here and prefer smaller freshwater lakes. Your first shot shows the chestnut ring at the base of the neck that is only seen when the light is at the right angle. Most birders think this species should have been named ring-billed duck for obvious reasons. - Jack

Not driving the Icefields Highway from Banff to Jasper would be a deriliction of duty for a photographer. The views are world class. You may need to do panoramas even with a 15mm. You may get lucky and see lots of wildlife, too.

@Kevin - My unzipped firmware from k1_241 is named fwdc228b.bin. This was also the name of the previous v240 firmware. Make sure you are downloading from the official Ricoh site. Note: this is for my K-1, NOT for the K-1 Mark II.

K200D has beautiful output. However, one needs to keep the ISO low and ensure you have extra batteries on hand since It chews through them quickly. - Jack

Nice tutorial, Mikey. However, there is one correction: darktable processing pipe works from the bottom positioned module upward to the top so one would need to shift-control drag the color calibration module to the bottom not to the top of the module order to have it processed first. Same for the History module: the first modules are on the bottom of the listing. - Jack

Nice series. As Lowell wrote, Northern Flickers in North America are the analogue to Green Woodpeckers. Flickers love ants but a tasty beetle larva such as in your photo series is welcomed.

Ubuntu user here using darktable for my image post-processing. I use lua export from darktable to gimp and back into darktable again for spotting, mostly in black and white work, since gimp's heal function is superior to that found in darktable. All darktable internal edits are done in 32 bit floating point precision so there is no noticeable difference in exported output from either dt or gimp. Fair amount of choice out there in linux land for image editing. - Jack
