From DA35mm 2.4 to DA35mm 2.8 Macro

I had the DA 35 initially and got some really good shots with it. But the lack of focus shift was annoying, and I didn't have a macro lens. Macro is ok with still subjects, and I like the perspective vs longer macros. Seems like you are "there".
So I got returned the DA and got a 35 Limited. It is a lens to consider if you want focus shift, really close focusing/macro, a built-in hood, and superb build. Was it worth it? Yes, to me. I have long forgotten the cost difference, and I am cheap. It is my most-used lens.

Deimos -
Sorry for my pointed response. That girl (niece) is a special person to me; that she was assaulted in broad daylight while there to help the people made - and still makes me furious. Your post struck a chord.
On a cheerier note, my 15mm Limited is on the way!
Beautiful images, all.
Best regards.

>There is a lot of BS around the actual dangers in Mexico, the media loves to jump on it. No doubt there are crime issues there, but the risk to tourists (who are not involved in things they shouldnt be) is minimal and much less than driving your car down the road at home.

You are wrong. A 19 year-old girl close to me would tell a very different story. Ask her if the talk of danger is BS.

>Use common sense, leave your jewelery at home, stay away from hard drugs, trafficking, and from the North and you should have no issues. It is an amazing country with amazing people, I have backpacked there many times for extended periods, well worth it!

I'm sure there are many good people there, but she said the police would not look for the perpetrators unless she bribed them. So don't talk about things of which you have minimal, if any knowledge.

Lens comparison, what do you want to see?

I'd like to see a 35mm comparison: the 35 Limited, the cheaper 35mm f/2.4 AL, and the FA. Might throw in the FA 31 for kicks.

Decission time Pentax Lenses or ?

Year was approx 1975. Vintage indeed. The first shot was at an overlook w/the Clark Range in the background, before we jogged back up into the Lyell Fork (basin) of the Merced River. The second and third shots were up high and southeast in the Lyell Fork Basin. Fourth shot was a cross-country (wow!) shortcut back to the main trail. The last one, if I recall, is hiking down from Nevada Falls to the valley.

I think a 17-70 is what I'd take today on a Pentax APS-C. May even do that!

First you have to decide if you want primes or a zoom, as you said - to avoid changing lenses. I did lots of backpacking in the Sierras in the 70's then the Wind River Range and other parts of the Rockies in the 80's and 90's using just a 50mm and a 28mm lens on film. I never really wanted anything wider than 28, and only once or twice took a 135mm (hardly used it).
So if you don't want to change lenses, I'd get the 18-135. Haven't used it but it's the one I'd get and I don't think you'd be disappointed.
If you don't mind changing lenses, I'd recommend the 21mm Limited and the 70mm Limited; that way you have about everything but macro and extreme telephoto covered. They're both great and small, easy to carry.

UV or Skylight ?

The only filter I use is a polarizer - when I need to cut through glare. I quit using skylight filters after I realized how good protective coatings are on modern lenses. All but a high quality "protective" filter will degrade the final image.

Contrast Highlight and Shadow Adjustment

I have been experimenting with the Custom Image settings with my K-7 and have a couple of questions about Contrast Highlight Adjustment and Contrast Shadow Adjustment. When do other users change these? What effects do you see? How are these different than using the Highlight and Shadow Adjustment in the D-Range setting?

To my eye, increasing Contrast Shadow Adjustment opens up (lightens) the shadow areas a little, reducing contrast.
Contrast Highlight Adjustment seems to pull down highlights (darken) when low, and brightens just barely when set higher (+4).
Do these functions do anything different to the image than what happens with D-Range settings? Is there any effect on noise with either or both?
Thanks.

K-7 High ISO Success!

There is less noise with these settings, but under tungsten light with AWB setting there are also pink-magenta halos/bands of color in areas between brighter and dimmer areas - such as the edges of the lady's forearm and onto her hand in the picture in the prior post. It is also present as a ring around the child's head - above the eyes and extending all around the hairline. I noticed this in my own photos using Chip's settings and high ISO. This could be my LCD, but I noticed it also on my camera.

I have found this pink-magenta banding goes away if I set D-Range Setting for Highlight Correction ON. This also may reduce noise a little. I'm not sure you get this color/band issue under daylight; however, indoor with tungsten is the situation I'm most likely to want high ISO

Hong,
Thanks for all this info. I will regroup and retry this weekend. Will be interested to see if WB or hue changes any under daylight conditions.
So do you shoot all pics with these settings, or just high ISO...and above what ISO value?

K-7 High ISO Success!

Hello all - back in PF again after a long absence. I got a used K-7 recently to see how I liked it (uninspired by Nikon) and after reading this post numerous times, tried both methods of reducing high ISO noise. I noted several things: 1. when using Chip's settings, ISO 3200 uses the same exposure (aperture & shutter speed) as for a given scene at ISO 1600 without those settings; so can the former really be considered an ISO 3200 shot? 2. there is a significant magenta-pink color cast when I use Chip's settings under incandescent light. 3. Using high-ISO noise reduction does about the same thing to reduce noise, as posted by Adam in the beginning of this thread; and sharpness is about the same. I don't see a lot of difference between the high-ISO noise reduction at 1600 than Chip's settings at ISO 3200. Not complaining, just wondering if others have noted similar things

K10D & Lens Back from Pentax Repair

Thanks for the informative post. I have the same backfocus issue with my K10D and 21mm Limited. Pentax service replied by email that I should send the camera and lens for service; they also said that the camera would focus correctly with other lenses.

When I made the correction using Debug, fixing the backfocus on the 21mm Limited made the other lenses frontfocus. How do your other lenses perform? Did you notice any change?
