I took my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens out yesterday to take some test photos and try and remember just how wide 17mm is compared to the 35mm on my Pentax 35mm f2.4 which is what I use and have on my K70 99.9% of the time. The Tamron's focus is awful so it need Tamron to calibrate it but the results shocked me (I hadn't used the Tamron lens for about a year) so I think for definate the Sigma 10-20mm f3.2 is gonna be excellent with regards to me being able to get more into the frame when I go to museums and places. If the 10-20mm gets anywhere near the image quality of the Pentax 35mm prime then i'll be absolutely over the moon.

Ok thanks i'll see how much the Sigma 10-20mm f3.2 lens will need adjustment when I get it.

I've decided to stick with auto focus lenses for now but i'm gonna try and practikce manually focussing sometimes using focus peak and then magnifying the image on live view. I've also decided to go for the Sigma 10-20mm for wide angle shots I wanna take, there is one question though, does the lens fine adjustment work on non Pentax lenses? Or would I definately have to send my camera and the lens to Sigma to get the lens calibrated for my camera?

The reason I ask is i'm looking for a wide angle lens that's got the sharpest image quality between f6.3 and f16 but it seems some are awesome at certain focal lengths and at certain aperteurs and others are great at other focal lengths and aperteurs, then others have excellent centre sharpness but just good or ok'ish edge sharpness. I was gonna go for the Pentax 20-40mm but i've seen the Samyang 16mm f2 has a brilliant review but is manual focus.

Ah I get ya yeah I never use manual focus ever so wasn't sure but now I understand, I just tried it out using my Pentax 35mm f2.5 lens in manual focus mode, a little diamond shape appeared on screen in the viewfinder as I turned the manual focus ring but then as I kept turning it the diamond symbol dissapeared. I took a photo and yet the actual focus was quite far back from the thing I focused on.

Am I right in thinking that with manual focus only lenses you HAVE to use the camera's manual focus and that there's no way to use autofocus at all? Or can the camera itself autofocus? I have a Pentax K70.

I've also been looking at the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM because when I go to museums sometimes there's very little space behind you and so I figured maybe at 10mm i'd be able to get more into the fram than with the Pentax 20-40mm lens.

I'll most likely get the Pentax 20-40mm lens then, I love my Pentax 35mm f2.4 but most of the time the 35mm focal length is too close to get the landscape photo I really want so I have to accept it and photography the scene it's able to capture within the frame while using that lens. Plus I find it's way too close (the focal length I mean) for walking around and photographing a lot of things. I go to museums and castles etc...and I find it's impossible to get most things into the frame and there's only so far I can walk backwards and back up.

The only reason to be honest I want the 16-85mm is so I can have 16 to about 30mm range of focal length, I already have a 35mm f2.4 Pentax prime and a Sigma 70-300mm f3.5-5.6 zoom so...If the 20-40mm is better image quality than the 21mm then yeah ok i'm definately interested in the 20-40mm lens.

You're saying the £1,499 Pentax 15-30mm f2.8 doesn't have as good image quality as the £114 Pentax 35mm f2.4? Seriously? That's shocking. I know prime lenses are generally better than zoom lenses but i'd honestly have thought a £1,499 short zoom lens would annihilate a £114 prime lens for image quality.

My big dilemma is whether to get the Pentax 16-85mm lens or whether to get my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 calibrated but also i've been thinking about possibly getting the Pentax 21mm f3.2 instead of the 16-85mm because I already have a Sigma 70-300mm which seems to give very good image quality and a Pentax 35mm f2.4 which gives truly excellent image quality. I'm wondering if the Pentax 16-85mm lens would be better image quality at 35mm than my Pentax 35mm f2.4 prime lens and better at 21mm than the Pentax 21mm f3.2 prime lens, if not then I might get the Pentax 21mm f3.2 prime instead of the 16-85mm.

Hi ya i'm wanting to know which lens you think would be the best overall image quality between the Pentax 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 and Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. I have the Tamron lens but it's in MASSIVE need of calibration by Tamron for my K70 camera, it used to be brilliant with my old K30 after Tamron calibrated it though. I'll only use the focal length between 17 upwards to about 25mm'ish because I have a Pentax 35mm f2.4 which is awesome image quality for around 35mm and a Sigma 70-300mm f3.5-5.6 for anything above 70mm so...I'm not sure whether to get the Tamron calibrated again or to buy the Pentax 16-85mm instead, i'm not bothered about spending money on the 16-85mm if it would be better image quality than the Tamron 17-50mm. Whether I buy the Pentax 16-85mm or keep my Tamron i'm sending them to the manufacturer with my camera to get them calibrated for my camera.

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 vs Pentax 35mm f2.4

This discussion about which is the best lens for image quality between the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and Pentax 35mm f2.4 prime lens should in real world terms be classed as opinion and people's experience only. The reason being is because when you consider some people use the Pentax K30, some use the K70 and others use the K1 which have different image quality and resolution in themselves and you also consider that two of the same lenses can and often do have different levels of focus accuracy and different levels of sharpness plus on top of that you take into account that some people have had the lenses professionally calibrated by either Tamron or Pentax themselves in their labs there really is no way anyolne can say for DEFINATE that either lens is best. My Tamron lens was calibrated by Tamron in Germany specially for my old K30 camera, so that's why it's probably focusing inaccurately on my K70 I have now. I'm going to Centre Parcs on Monday i'm taking my girlfriend and the kids away but when I get back i'm gonna contact Tamron and have them calibrate the 17-50mm f2.8 lens again but this time for my K70 camera. It's still within the 5 year warranty period so I know I can get it calibrated again.

When it was calibrated for my K30 a few of years ago the result was that the image quality was excellent, but after I have it calibrated with my K70 i'll see shich truly has the best image quality between the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 at 35mm focal length vs the Pentax 35mm f2.4

Here are two photos I took, the first is the Pentax 35mm f2.4 and the second is the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, I set my Pentax K70 on a Hahnel Triad 40 tripod, set the focus to centre spot focus and used an aperteur of f4.5 and then took the photos leaving the camera exactly where it was and only changing the lenses. I set the camera to fire from the remote control and set a 3 second remote timer. I had to adjust the photo's brightness just a tad on the 35mm lens photo because using the same exact settings the image was very, very noticeably brighter.

1. Pentax 35mm f2.4
2. Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (set to 35mm focal length)

---------- Post added 01-21-17 at 10:18 AM ----------

The photos are 100% crops and as you can see the Pentax 35mm f2.4 photo is sharper, that photo was taken with the camera at a distance of about 1 metre away from the subject, when you get further away though the Tamron lens's sharpness falls off even further and the photo is even softer as you pixel peep. The photos were taken in my kitchen section of my one bedroom flat, my flat is pretty dark'ish and dingy but out and about in the daylight outside the difference between the lenses image quality si even more noticeable. The focus point was on the badge corner right near the 'F' of the 'FBT'

I can tell the image quality difference between my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and my Pentax 35mm f2.5 but then I pixel peep to see the sharpness and make sure I did get the focus point right, also I view my photos on a full HD 42" LG tv that I calibrated as I use that as a computer monitor.

I've had the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for a few years now, I originally bought it to use with my old Pentax K30 but the images taken with it seemed soft so I sent it back to the retailer and they sent me another. The replacement they sent me also seemed a bit soft so I contacted Tamron and they arranged pick up of my Pentax K30 and the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens, when they received it they sent both to Germany so Tamron could make the 17-50mm f2.8 lens as good as it could be while used with my K30. It came back and was MUCH better and sharper, now I have the K70 and it appears that the Tamron lens needs calibration again because the focus is soft again all over but the sharpest section of any photo taken with it is off centre to the left regardless of the fact I used central single point focus.

The Tamron lens is so soft that it's amazingly difficult to dial in a very accurate lens adjustment figure, I can see when an adjustment of for example -10 or +10 isn't right at all but as soon as I get near to the right lens adjustment amount in my camera's adjustment menu I can't see any difference between very different numbers on the camera's adjustment menu. Plus i've used f2.8 for the lens adjustment with the Tamron on (as you're supposed to when making lens calibration adjustments) and it's only when you use f4.5 or a higher f number that you can tell where the focus actually is on the lens adjustment scale i'm photographing. If you use any larger aperteur than f4.5 (lower f number) then you can't see where focus is because a large portion of the lens adjustment scale chart is blurry.

I had to dial in +2 adjustment for the Pentax 35mm f2.4 I now have but after doing that the lens is neither forward nor back focusing and sharpness is truly excellent. I have many photos from after the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 was calibrated with my K30 and not one photo was anywhere near as sharp as using the Pentax 35mm f2.4.

Yeah here's the review for the 16-85mm lens :

HD Pentax-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Review

That site seems to be very good for reviews it does so I pay a lot of attention to it. Regarding the 31mm f1.8 i'm not sure how much better the image quality will be compared to my 35mm f2.4 but that review site does state is is better, although it also states that casual users might not see an image quality difference so....I'm not 100% sure if i'm gonna get it but I am definately thinking about it for sure. To be honest it's a toss up between the Pentax 31mm f1.8 or the Sigma f1.4 as i've read the reviews and it seems to be a truly excellent lens. Plus it's cheaper than the Pentax 31mm f1.8 as well by about £550.

Yeah funnily enough I was thinking that exact same thing earlier, that I now love prime lenses SO much but I think later on this year i'm gonna get the Pentax 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 instead of buying a longer focal length prime and wide angle prime lenses because i've read a few reviews on sites like ephotozine etc...that state the 16-85mm lens is excellent and sharp at all focal lengths and aperteurs. I also have a Sigma 70-30mm f3.5-5.6 which has excellent image quality for it's price but i'll be replacing that the end of this year with the Tamrom 70-200mm f2.8 as people i've spoken to say it's a definate upgrade in image quality from the Sigma. I might next year replace the Pentax 35mm f2.4 prime lens I have with either the Pentax DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited or the Pentax SMC-FA 31mm f1.8 AL Limited depending on which has the better image quality.

I decided to go ahead and buy the 35m f2.4 lens and I have to say my god it's excellent image quality, it rapes the Tamron for image quality, below is a simple test photo of my girlfriend I took earlier and you can see the image quality is fantastic, I also took a photo of her daughter too, and I also converted that one to black and white too.

The Tamron-SP 70-200mm f2.8 DI VC USD was the one I was initially looking at although I read in a professional review that it's not as sharp as the original without the vibration compensation but i'm not sure you can still get the original one, i'm not sure anyone sells it anymore.
