Thank you Des.
I like to move in close. Sometimes I win; sometimes not. My goal is to walk away with one interesting shot. Thanks for the tip about zooming back to 260.
Cheers,
Loyd

Hi Des,
I recently purchased a 55-300. It is quickly replacing the 150-450 as my lens of choice for birds. Can you offer any tips?

I do believe this Osprey blames you for a lost meal! Your last shot says it all:)
It couldn't have been easy getting those shots with the 150-450. Any tips for the frustrated?

Thank you for sharing. It appears that you had plenty of time to plan. I love that you know enough not only to set up such a shot but also to criticize it. I would never have known that a simple change in f-stop could improve an already amazing shot!

I agree with you on all points but one: no 55 for me. It will take me awhile to learn what the 50 can achieve. And every time folks generously share their shots and EXIFs (thank you perfessor5646), I learn in leaps and bounds.
Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts. Flowers anyone?

Franc! That Kestrel is a born model. The ones I see are usually sitting on wires well above my head. I tend to have better luck with the larger birds of prey. The first is a Bald Eagle in my yard (cropped). The second is an immature Red Tailed Hawk in the natural grasslands of Farwell Canyon (could use some processing). Both photos are taken with my 150-450/K3 III combination.

Hi pres589.
My goal is to know this DFA*50 lens/K3 III camera combo so well I can switch at will. My ultimate goal is to capture intriguing images of people in the moment. This, of course, can be accomplished less conspicuously with a telephoto lens, but I'm up to the challenge. I will be satisfied when I can capture a spontaneous image that looks as good as what Medex composes in his indoor and "outdoor" studios:).
As you will note after glancing at a few of my first images with this new lens, I have a long way to go:lol:
The first image in a pair is manual focus and TAv. The second in the pair is fully auto. Sorry, but I don't recall how to include EXIF.

Loyd

The K3 III certainly works well with telephoto lenses. I love this portrait of your dad's Shepherd, and I like your closeups posted on flickr. Do you own any portrait lenses?

I hope you are right. I chose the 50 over the 85. It should be on my camera by tomorrow.

Thank you for your replies. Even though I wanted the 85 quite badly, I have accepted the limitations of my K3 III and followed Sandy's advice. I should have my new HD Pentax D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW some time next week. If anyone has any pointers about how to adapt this lens to my K3 iii crop camera, I would appreciate it.

Hi Lloyd,
I own the SMC Pentax DA* 1:2.8 16-50 ED AL (IF) SDM. This has been my best indoor lens to date. I agree with your take on the 20-40. The used Tamron is 2.8.
At the moment I am seriously considering the 70 vs the 77. Are you familiar with either of these?
By the way, the 150-450 is worth the expense.

Loyd

I do the same, but in a low-light situation, my ISO will be about 8000, which is quite grainy. Do you use Paint Shop Pro to remove the grain? I use a Topaz product, but I also own Paint Shop.

I switch back and forth. Right now I am photographing birds without using the hood. I think my shots are better this way, but my instinct agrees with you. Do you make any adjustments to shutter speed and/or aperture to accommodate the hood? I am currently experimenting with the TvA mode recommended by some of the birders on this site. I am getting reasonable results, though not as clear as before I switched to the latest firmware. Here are a couple of shots, the Kinglet at 2000 5.6, no hood and the Merlin at 3200 5.6 no hood. I may have applied some minor processing using Photoshop Elements.

The silhouetted Ibis' is a classic. I have tried to capture Canada Geese in a similar manner, but my results are amateurish to date. The ultimate photo would be to include the sun or the moon in the background. I wonder what settings that would require?

Thank you one and all for giving me the confidence to update my firmware. I subscribe to the philosophy, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But firmware is updated for a reason, so I will upgrade today.
By the way, has Yvon Bourque's manual for the K3-III been published yet? I'm in line for a free copy:)

Are you familiar with the work of Canadian Jeff Wall? Many years ago, his large-scale back-lit Cibachrome photographs caught my eye, and I became a fan of backlit transparencies. I hope that some day my creations will be displayed in this manner. That being said, Samsung has a "tile" called The Wall (probably not a coincidence) that displays stunning digital images. I wish that I could view the same creation side-by-side, one displayed as a back-lit transparency, the other as a direct-view LED. My guess is that tiles are the future.

Yes. I find that the K3, the 150-450 and I are not the best of bird photographers (yet!). But put the three of us together with a tripod, and we can capture still objects at a respectable level.
