in-camera Jpeg film presets?

A fellow Pentaxians in Canada FB group, Marc Andre-Kelly of Montreal posts film like images in jpegs all the time. I am posting one of his contribution comments below to see if that helps:

Heads-up: Long post

"I love the Pentax' ethos and the Image Modes they offer. They aren't drowning me in new tech ever second day. They do their own thing and I have time to breathe and just enjoy photography for what it is.
Only other company I would enjoy shooting with, is Fujifilm. Because they leaned into their film history, and their cameras have a bunch of film modes to select from.

Pentax has done this kind of thing for a long time now, since the K-x! Cross Processing, Bleach Bypass, Reversal. Now with modes like Gold, Satobi, Fuyuno, Harubeni, Kyushu, Katen. With some of the most unique (I still have to experience a few) prime lenses that have ever been.

We have some incredible artistic and creative tools at our disposal that mimic and replicate the joy of selecting a film based on our preference of contrast, tones, colours... You can set all this up and shoot JPEG all day long and never ever bother with a second of post-processing. Yes, every brand has image profiles. But, Pentax has put way more passion into it than the other brands (Fujifilm has done this in their own way too), in my opinion."

Photography habits I want to change

Hi,

There is just one habit for me as a hiking photographer when I take shots to document my long hikes through taking pictures of landscapes, other hikers on the trail and hiking activities, wildlife, wildflowers, insects, trees, etc.

I need to remember to change settings between those required for wildlife and landscapes, i.e., shutter speed and aperture.

Hi,

I think Pentax neither got it mojo back nor it is doomed. It is just there.

Btw, I am happy that Pentax is not big enough to launch a camera or a lens every quarter. That would have made me part with huge sum of money every now and then. As James Popsys says in his video, instead of spending on camera gear, spend money on traveling to different locations and do some photography. I agree with him.

I see Canon and Sony bringing new cameras and lenses almost every month, forcing Nikon to keep up with them. I chat with Canon and Sony users all the time and they are always thinking of upgrading. I want to know how many of the professional Canon and Sony users are millionaires.

As to a point from an earlier commentator, imho, Pentax is only closing SMC line of lenses, focusing on HD line.

Hi,

If I get a D FA 150-450 mm, and based on so many positive reviews that there is a strong possibility that I will, I will pair it with my KP and use it.

The little one only gets KF/K-70 with 18-135 mm or 10-17 mm LOL!

Hi Kiwizinho,

Thank you for leaving a detailed comment. I think getting our boy a K-70 at a reduced price or a KF will make sense. He will be using one of several lenses in my repertoire. I think he will be good with kit lens 18-135 mm, because he goes for everything - from fooling around taking shots of leaves to his mom in various poses to rabbits, squirrels and robins. I think like me he is fast developing into a jack of all trades and master of none. I would rather not go into any other system, because he constantly asks me for a setting that I know in Pentax gear, but another brand would require me to develop my knowledge on it to help him.

Personally, I have been researching OM-1 to OM-5 with a suitable Zuiko lens, watching Espen Halland's videos, but I stop short of buying because I get intimidated by having to spend time in learning the new system rather than developing my skills on the existing Pentax gear.

Very well said, Lowell!

Right now, he just goes around taking shots of plants, flowers, squirrels, robins, rocks, sometimes butterflies, and easily approachable waterfowl. He uses K-r primarily, but I can easily see that the camera is unable to keep pace with his blitzkrieg photography. Sometimes he just asks for my KP with 55-300 PLM on it to shoot birds from a distance. I am just letting him develop his own interests and see if he remains a generalist like me or a specialist in one particular area. I just don't want him to lose interest in photography using a basic camera like K-r.

I had K-S2 that he used first when he was a 5 year old in Chicago when I was not even in the entourage. I wish I could upload his pictures here. I loved my K-S2. It had a shutter block problem and I got that repaired. Unfortunately, it got stolen during a trip abroad. Sometimes I do think to buy a used one.

I have 35 mm that he can use, but he prefers a zoom lens and goes for my 10-17, 18-135 or even 55-300 PLM.

Regards,

His mom handed my very less used Canon RP with 24-105 mm lens to him. He did not like it at all. Back to K-r and KP he went.

---------- Post added 11-30-23 at 12:49 PM ----------

Hi,

I think he needs someone to constantly give him an assurance that he has selected the correct settings. With any other brand, I will have to learn the camera first. His mom gave him my dust gathering Canon RP and he did not like it primarily because I could not guide him on various settings. So he went back to K-r and my KP.

---------- Post added 11-30-23 at 12:53 PM ----------

Hi,

I was a victim of my favorite K-S2's solenoid aperture failure, which I got fixed and then it got stolen. I would love to buy a used K-S2. He will love completely reticulating screen of KF or K-S2 very much. Actually, he started on K-S2 in 2019 when he was only 5 yo.

Hi,

Thank you for a detailed response!

I have 55-300 mm PLM, but I am not giving it to our 7 yo on a full time basis LOL! I will get him a KF and he can use my 18-135mm that he uses with K-r, sometimes getting my K-5iis to experiment with. He has used my 55-300 PLM on a few occasions though.

Regards,

---------- Post added 11-29-23 at 11:37 PM ----------

That is one good quality image. I just wanted to confirm whether K-70 or KF would do. I am glad that it can handle wildlife.

Regards,

Suhail

He uses K-r and 18-135 mm, sometimes 10-17 mm for fun. He has used my 55-300 mm PLM on a few occasions, but no, I don't want to give him this lens as I use all the time.

Regards,

---------- Post added 11-29-23 at 11:53 PM ----------

Yes, he struggles with the weight but somehow manages. He has used my KP with 55-300 mm PLM.

---------- Post added 11-29-23 at 11:57 PM ----------

Hi,

This is a good suggestion. I will look for a K-70 at lower price. Otherwise, KF is good to go.

---------- Post added 11-30-23 at 12:02 AM ----------

Hi,

That K-70 or KF can do wildlife is reassurance for me. He has used K-r with 18-135mm and even my KP with 55-300 PLM on a few occasions, albeit for smaller durations of time. I think he will be able to handle either a K-70 or a KF with any lens, but for shorter time slots.

Hi all,

Is anyone on these forums using K-70 or KF for predominantly wildlife photography?

I want to buy a KF for our 7 year old, who wants to follow in my footsteps (hiking photography genre) and shoot wildlife among other interests (landscapes, plants, flowers, other hikers, hiking activities such as putting up a hiking camp, some fun vlogging, etc.).

If there is a thread on this topic already, please direct me to it.

Hi CK1951,

I wanted to move exactly in the opposite direction. I am Pentax user through and through, but also have Canon RP, which is gathering dust. More recently, I started exploring OM-1 with 100-400 mm lens and watching Espen Helland's videos. The only reason was distant wildlife in parks likes Yellowstone, Everglades, Grasslands, etc. However, each time I take my Pentax gear out on hiking and wildlife photography, I tell myself that instead of spending money on new gear, I should spend it on traveling and enjoy photography with what I have.

I had fascination with K-1 ii as well, but ultimately I decided against it as pairing it with D FA 150-450 would have been heavy for me.

That 55-300 mm PLM is a masterpiece on any camera.

I was shooting songbirds at Point Pelee National Park and Rondeau Provincial park in Ontario. Initially, I had 1.4TC x Pentax 300 mm on my KP for better reach. The quality of shots was excellent, but autofocus was slow due to light value. My keeper rate was too small. So I shifted to my 55-300 mm PLM. LO and behold! The results were excellent and the autofocus was quick too.

I will, going forward, continue to use my 1.4TC x Pentax 300 mm combo for distant or slow wildlife for better reach, such as in Yellowstone NP or in African Safari parks.

However, for capturing quick moving wildlife, especially at closer range, I will use 55-300 mm PLM.

You have taken superb sharp eye focused shots!

I discovered the TC only in June 2022. Bought it immediately, paired with Pentax 300 DA*, and have not looked back again.

I also have 55-300 PLM, which I always carry if I am on long distance hikes in the national/provincial parks, leaving 1.4TCx300 at home. When on wildlife missions, I put these two lenses on my two different cameras for different reach(es).

What type of camera bags you prefer ?

I use the following, but I would go by use not by brand:

1. An old version of Lowepro Photo Sport 30L: For a day long hiking and photography gear, especially in foreign lands. I used it extensively during my hikes in the UK national parks in October last year. I use it as carry on in flight.
2. An old version of Lowepro Flipside 400 AW. For short hikes of not more than an hour of 2 hours carrying maximum photography gear.
3. Lowepro Flipside Trek BP 350: For day-long hikes inside of my province of Ontario, Canada

and finally, the one that I like the most:

4. Gregory Zulu 65 L for carrying backpacking and photography gear. This is the most user friendly bag I have - lot of space, tilted side pockets for easily grabbing water bottles, bear spray, etc. on the move, front access as well so that I can grab my camera equipment at the bottom of the bag quickly, Thick hip belt to transfer the load on to my hip bones leaving no load on my shoulder, etc.

I hope this helps.

JPEG by all family members.

My wife, son, daughter and I watched this video with interest. Among us family members, we use KP, K-5iis, and K-r with JPEGs. Our mutual take was:

Shoot RAW if you make money from your pictures: you can spend as much time in post as you want. Just don't overdo it for an average audience will discard your effort as "oh it is photoshopped".

Shoot JPEG if your average fanbase would not care and would like your photos anyways or if you want to use your photos for something that you want to make money on, such as on a book (such as Marlis Boucher's Park Bagger), newspaper article, a website like travel report, etc.

Misc Hiking with my dog along Niagara Parkway, Ontario, Canada ( and using Pentax)

I hiked with my dog K2, the Hungarian Kuvasz, along the 18 km stretch of Niagara Parkway on a cold and cloudy day in February.

I had to put dog shoes on K2 due to the use of salt on several sections of the walkway.

only one shot at # 2 was taken using K-S2, 4 others were taken using KP and 18-135 mm

1. K2 and hike along the Niagara Parkway near the Falls
2. Horseshoe Falls of the Niagara Falls system. I should have cleaned KS2's sensor
3. Three km north along the Niagara Parkway, we saw this giant temple inside a gated attraction. Plus, there were many statues of large Buddhas. This was the Ten Thousand Buddha’s Sarira Stupa Temple.
4. Whirlpool Aero Car site, which was truly gorgeous. Here, Niagara River makes a 90 degrees turn.
5. Still long way to go
