New K-70 and Aperture Block

My camera has come back from John Pye after being repaired and everything is fine so I am very happy with the results as I used it yesterday at an anniversary party.

If you want a quick reply, email them directly and not via the form on the Ricoh website as they never seem to get it.

The customer service was excellent, quick replies and it took a week to repair once I gave the go ahead. Tim in their technical office is very efficient, informative and polite. The camera arrived the next day by courier after I had paid the repair bill, which was £114 inclusive of VAT.

Apparently it's got a 6 month warranty so I'll be putting it though it's paces over the next month or so.

I intend to use it more often now especially for upcoming events and parties.

Anything sent through the Pentax website will never get to them as I used it 2 weeks ago and heard nothing. I then sent them a direct email last night as per the email details on the Pentax website last night and they answered within 24hrs.

I have sent them the camera for inspection so let's see what they come back to me re the aperture problem.

I bought my K-70 in 2017 (manufactured 28.6.2017, shutter count now is 5,089) which I mainly used for attending live gigs.it's not had much use especially during covid. I decided to give it a whirl and guess what the aperture problem has occurred. The 2 year warranty ran out in 2019 and I'm sure there was no extended warranty offered at the time.

I am not proficient enough to take it apart and solder so I'm hoping John Pye will be able to repair it. I've sent them an email about 2 weeks ago via the Ricoh/Pentax website and I'm still waiting for a reply. The John Pye Technical repair website has no contact or email details which I find rather odd. John Pye repairing it seems to be my only option as I am not going to buy another new K-70 body and the step to a KP is well out of my price range.

I am tad disgusted with Pentax as this seems to be a recurring fault in K-70's and yet they have done nothing about it. I take it that Ricoh have never addressed the issue with some kind of recall.

Does anyone have an idea on the repair price?

After waiting patiently (3years or more) on that well known website I at long last managed to snag a the Pentax BG-10 battery grip (£80 inc next day delivery) for the Pentax MZ-S, which is the best film camera I've ever used. The seller was UK based and the condition was excellent as his MZ-S had packed up on him. Both the camera and BG are as rare as hens teeth in the UK and I wasn't prepared to buy from outside the UK due to the import duty and other taxes.

It was Brough to my attention via search alert email.

It pays to be patient I guess.

No more cheap Pentax camera ...

You need to remember nobody buys a smartphone for its camera as it has a multitude of other uses of which the camera is one of them. last year i baulked at the price of a new DSLR and bought a 2nd hand K20D, which i thought was great despite being so many years old. However the K20D started to struggle at taking low level concert shots at my local music venue and so i bought a K70 in a great black Friday deal. I got the body and a free 50mm DA lens for £436 ($567). I don't intend to upgrade anytime soon. Cameras have never been cheap and i can go back to the film cameras in the 80's, which were well out of my price range back then.

There was an article I read somewhere that stated that photography was becoming a rich mans pursuit not sure of that's quite true unless you are talking Leica's but the semi-pro market is expensive.

I have been eying this lens ever since I bought my k-70 last month however Amazon UK have it as it's deal of the day so it's on a countdown (21hrs left as I write this). The price was £149.99 now reduced to £95.20. However if you have a student Amazon prime account (which I have) you get another 10% off so its can be yours for £85.68.

I think I will be making a purchase.

SMC Pentax DA 1:4-5.6 50-200mm ED

SMC Pentax DA 1: 3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL

SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm

SMC Pentax-F 1:3.5-4.5 28-80mm

SMC Pentax-FA 1:4.7-5.6. 28-80mm

The older lenses I use with my Pentax MZ-S but I will give them a run out with the K-70 shortly. I have taken it for a spin and it's a very enjoyable camera having lots of fun with it.

Reasons why I bought the K70

I bought a 2nd hand K10D after I bricked a 2nd hand K110D, then I bought a 2nd hand K20D body with battery grip etc and that has been my main digital camera since last year. I used it mainly for music concerts as I go to quite a few. However on my last couple of visits the K20D was really struggling due to the low light conditions at my fav music venue.

Amazon had its Black Friday offer £499 for the body (£100 off), it also gave you a free Pentax 50mm lens and on top of that I received another £63 off as I had a student prime account so in total I paid £436 for a K-70 with SMC 50mm DA 1.8 lens.

I can't complain about that at all ( the reviews have been very very good) as it's a very nice camera however my next music concert isn't until February 2018!!

I've just bought the K-70 and when I go to the website all I see is the manual for download and nothing about firmware. As I've had a very bad experience with a 2nd hand Pentax last year I will steer clear.

The price has gone back up to £599 but the free 50mm lens is still there. It's a humdinger of a camera as well knocks the pants off my old K20D.

Japanese and British Ebay sellers

live in the UK I never buy big price items from Japan or USA as the import duties and VAT will probably add half the price of the item to the total selling price. I do buy lots of small items from China without any problems but the delivery times can be very slow. Also the pound has fallen through the floor against the dollar so that's another reason not to purchase from USA.
