Just get an 18-135 and quit fretting. If you want a faster lens for indoors get a Tamron 17-50.

I'm always impressed with how many people recommend giving up reach.... it's just not in my mindset. The 135 part of the 18-135 is already a compromise from an 18-200 or 18-250 type lens made in the interest if image quality. I'd suggest those who complain about the IQ at 135 just don't understand the need to use a tripod in low light for a lens that long. Especially true when some one compares a 17-70. My guess is a 17-70 would cost me about a third of my images. And people can complain about the image quality at 135..., well if you shoot with a 70 and crop to the same field of view, it's a lot worse.

As a walk around I can live with 135... barely. people talking about 70mm as the long end for a walk-around lens? IYa well. I've read some people say the 20-40 is their favourite walk around lens. Everybody has an opinion.

Suggestion Neutralize the 'why I won't buy a k-3' thread

Well, I know this is a radical concept to some, but maybe it's a good idea to read beyond the first post in a thread before replying.

Edit: Your point about me being too close to this one is valid. As a thread participant, and even moreso as a moderator, I find a congenial, non confrontational; non back biting, testosterone spitting, my-dad-can-beat-up-your-dad, schoolyard slap fest thread quite refreshing and beneficial to the forum.

Lens for indoors without flash

Absolutely, Merts. You can even use apertures sharpest for your glass, which may be f5.6 or f8 even for a fast lens. Give yourself aperture and shutter speed. [emoji4]

There aren't many options for Pentax, sadly. There's a real dearth of fast lenses at the wide end (say, under 30mm). You can find plenty at f/2.8, but Pentax has no autofocus primes aside from the FA*24 that are f/2 or below. There's the A 28mm f/2 as well, but it's manual only.

I can't recommend the DA35 for indoors--it's just not wide enough. "Using legs" only works outdoors, really, as if you can't simply take steps back in crowded museums or small rooms and get the photo you want. I find that indoors, I am parked below 24mm mostly and rarely come near 35mm.

Your options are 3rd party:
1) Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. It's absolutely wonderful when it works; I've been lucky that mine has performed awesomely. Others report severe problems with the autofocus.
2) Sigma 24mm f/1.8
3) Sigma 28mm f/1.8

That's probably about it for wide, fast primes.

No kidding. You can see how it would become a lightning rod for silly humor.

Much of the thread is actually about the thread, or about how the thread has become about the thread, which is not only delightfully meta, but a great example of how random factors can cause a thread to grow, mutate, evolve, beat up other threads and take their lunch money, and ultimately destroy Tokyo. :D

Careful...I resemble that remark!

Seriously now, let me see...
  • We have Ricoh brand by Ricoh Co., LTD. This includes the Caplio and G-series compact digital cameras.

  • We also have Pentax brand by Ricoh Imaging Co., LTD. Included are the products from the former Hoya lines of Pentax-branded cameras and lenses.

  • Finally we have Ricoh brand by Ricoh Imaging Co., LTD represented by the GR-series cameras. The GR cameras round out the offerings from Ricoh Imaging Co., LTD.

Have I missed anything? All of the above bear the Ricoh name. Some of the above also bear the Pentax name. Ricoh is (among other things) a camera company that acquired one of their competitors and has continued to manufacture that company's product under that name as well as their own. It happens all the time.

Does this create some sort of conflict of interest or moral inequity? Have laws been broken?

Is the balance of the universe in jeopardy!?:eek::eek::eek:

Let's clarify a few things.
No one is being prevented from speaking. Everyone is free to speak their mind here, as long as it is done within the rules set by the forum owner. (which the posts in this thread are, so no problem there.) Yes EVERYONE. Even those who disagree with what others have said.
The problem comes in when people confuse "freedom to speak" with freedom to say whatever they want without repercussion.

Im pleased to see both names on the camera. Obviously Pentax belongs on the front as always, but Ricoh is a quality company and make excellent cameras (the Ricoh GR for one). Pentax was dead in the water and Ricoh are doing all they can to save it. This fanboy nonsense has gotta stop.

If it were not so sad this entire thread would be funny. Pentax puts out what is arguably the best APS-C camera on the market and certainly the best they have produced and the only flaw that can be debated is that Ricoh was so proud of it they put their name on it.

One - Because it is not Pentax anymore it is Ricoh. Pentax is one brand that Ricoh owns along with a number of others such as: Aficio, Savin, Gestetner, Lanier, Rex-Rotary, Nashuatec, Infotec, and GlobalScan. It appears they merged the new Pentax division with the existing camera lines and formed Ricoh Imaging Company to build cameras. It's their company why would they call it something else?

Two - Because it is not Pentax anymore it is Ricoh, duh.

Three - Because it is not Pentax anymore it is Ricoh. They are the largest copier company in the world. 279th largest company in the world. Have been in business since 1936. Have made cameras since the mid 1950's.

Four - I would be more worried if they did NOT put their name on it. Pentax by itself means the brand is standing alone and will win or lose all by itself, no reflection on the parent company if it fails. Ricoh on the back means the camera has the full faith and pride of the parent company and failure will reflect not only on Pentax but on Ricoh. That is a bold, positive statement that they are proud and confident of the brand and the camera.

Had they been bought by Nikon would you expect the product to not have Nikon on it? Or for them to NOT use the acquired technology to promote the Nikon brand?

Ricoh has a camera history going back just as far as Pentax or Nikon does. Their main business may be copiers but they are not newcomers to the camera business or to the use and value of name brands.

I have as much loyalty or at least affection for the history and story of Pentax as anyone else, but that name is owned by Ricoh now and if in 5 years a DSLR has RICOH on the prism instead of PENTAX, well if it still has k-mount and still takes my lenses then I guess that's what I'll be shooting with.

Possible answers in red:

I posted on the News and Rumors section a link about a Ricoh presentation - Pentax was mentioned a lot for a small acquisition. And what do you make out of: "Further strive to enhance a strong brand built around interchangeable lens cameras"?

Did people boycott Pentax when Honeywell was on the prism?

"Pentax" was a word invented by Zeiss for a camera with a Pentaprism..... It was simply a name owned by Zeiss. Now it is a name owned by Ricoh.

Personally I couldn't give a 4XXXX what name is on the camera as long as it's a quality product and takes my K-mount lenses.

Which data card for K5 II?

You'll always want class 10 cards IMO. If you want the absolute best performance, a write speed of 30Mb/s is about as fast as the camera can write, so you should look for cards with that rating or higher.

I generally recommend sandisk 45Mb/s cards (16gb or 32gb) as they're fast, big, and reliable :)
