So what would turn you off from buying the new Pentax FF

The K mount. I believe i hinted at i was not entirely convinced that the FF mock ups with the K FA Pentax has released will be what we will be getting. I had the same experience with my Nikon d90 with the mock up having some sort of Frankenstein-ed mount.

I thought about your question and it would be nice to have less problems between Sigma and Pentax.

Maybe i am just being a little paranoid.

Price is a factor but mount type might also be in play, still not sold on the FA mount on the released mockups. So Lenses and lens cost will also play in making the new FF unattractive.

Hidden serious bugs like the recent k-3II GPS woes.

No programmable buttons.

No built in flash. I can live without GPS but in a pinch a flash, even a built in one has more use even if i have a remote flash.

Wifi/BT isn't important to me as most DSLR wifi connectivity these days is spotty at best and insufferably slow and complicated for most people especially if your clients system isn't setup to inter-home message which is about 99% of setups. Most of the time i carry a combination USB/SD card reader and that's what i use, even at USB v1.0 it still better than wifi.

Bad battery life would be a deterrent even with a grip battery pack.

Slow or unstable write to card speeds: Buss/Buffer write speed to memory card is important but even my old k200d with a a UHS card saves quickly for a camera of that era.

I am going to wait to the actual product models come out. I am not about to speculate on the type of lens mount because i know better than to bet against company's profit margins.

It is amusing and disturbing to see how all the intrigue hyped promotions turns people into Golum from LOTR... Mine! My own My Precious!

Not certain. I've seen a couple mock ups so far and they were both different. It's no use speculating as they could surprises us with something entirely new in lend mounts.

I've done a dual m42 85-210 lens + 2x teleconverter on my pentax cameras and they work fine. Pentax's old/generic lens adaptation is probably one of the best because they allow for more manual adjustments.

The sigma 1.4 50mm art takes amazing photos on the sd-15. Better than adapter mounted to a nikon d600 but i think there is something weird with the sigma to nikon adaptation, i know that the sigma 50-500 (bigma) is a little off on my d600 as well. Not sure what the problem is though as all the settings are proper. But they are both crop sensor lenses so that's probably it.

I've run across a couple cheap generic pentax K mount lenses that also have the weird focus range problem where they can't focus at all within a certain zoom range. Normally this is about 5mm range but i have come across 10mm+ gaps where they won't focus correctly. 5mm is tolerable but not 10 or more so combining radically different adapters won't work with all lenses especially the cheap ones. After seeing the insane difference between lenses on the sony a6000 you need to get it right the first time. Sony a6000 +Zeiss = good

Live and learn.

I don't know the whole (secret side) story about why Sigma bought Foveon but asking Sigma about any new x3 cameras is like pulling teeth, and the answers are rather short and blunt. " NO!" Sigma is not pouring any funds into Foveon, and no other sensor company is making of an R&D effort these days either.

Perhaps it's time we have a consumer owned aka open source developer in the style of linux OS community as it seems they are the only people actually still in R&D.

Yes i am aware of the tilted pixel tech. It's kind of in limbo right now due to legal red tape.
The premiss is good but i have concerns on how durable it will be.

In the end i doubt that it would be out in time for the FF Pentax release some time between October and December 2015.

What would be interesting is the FF Pentax with a foveon x3 sensor. Most of the problems of the sigma x3 series are buffer size and software/firmware based. However this will probably never happen even if brands such as Toshiba have FF size x3 sensors in several of their research tech.

It's a shame to have so much proprietary bickering between brands leading to little to no R&D.

I hope that if they do end up using the K-3 body for the FF that they don't incorporate the GPS. The popup flash replacing GPS unit has already proven to be a rather large blunder including the recall on somewhere near 11,000 or so units at the customers expense. Pentax just upgrade the firmware for the k-3 mark 1 for pixel shift and astral tracking and be done with the Mark-2.

Ratcheteer: They already have the stepped sensor in the sony RX100 mark 4 EXR. It's not exactly like the foveon x3 sensor The sony stepped sensor has a set of pre-filters (one per color) in steps to filter out extraneous or distorted light. The Foveon X3 is the digital version of 35mm film with three layers of actual sensor material so it's not really the same. I explained it in more detail in another FF Pentax thread. Sony uses the EXR sensor in previous models but without the pre-filters, therefore there isn't any new sensor tech, just some minor problem fixes.

There hasn't been any real "leaps and bounds" in digital camera sensor tech since the foveon x3. Just some minor upgrades hyped up to sound like it's actually a huge improvement. Firmware programing upgrades have been more of the forefront of glitch fixes for a while now in order to make money for the least amount of R&D effort and cost.

From a R&D perspective the most performing tech is made long before the current tech in order to span out sales profits with less performing gear. For example the latest Intel or AMD processors were actually designed 5-10 years ago.

Technically you can give the pixel shift ability of the k-3 mark 2 to the K-3 mark one by upgrading the firmware and regain your built in flash, if Ricoh would allow it.

Not easy considering that no one knows what mount they will be using. For myself if it's still the K-mount i will be using the sigma 50mm f1.4 art lens, sticking with the basics to get a base line feel. 18-55 kit lenses are too unpredictable but that would probably be the next lens to test. I could adapt my nikon d600 FF lenses but i have yet to decide. However i would probably keep the d600 kit as it is and look for something good for the FF pentax. It's always good to have a backup, or two or three.

Yes i mentioned this in the DR VS Mpix FF forum thread. Regular back lit sensors will produce a haze like effect at junction of contrast areas such as hair to back ground which end up bleeding into one color or the other. The Sony rx100 mark 4 has sensor pre filters (one per colour). Which seems to make a significant difference over the non filtered sensor models. I also tried holding a 58mm uv haze filter over the lens of a backlit sensor P&S camera and it did make a fair difference or improvement in clarity. So it doesn't matter if you get more mpix or DR if the sensor get's confused.

Also does any one actually know if this new FF pentax camera will be mirrorless or not? Most of the rumors i have heard are a little thin and quirky on the details.

DR or megapixels

Debatable between DR and Megapixels. There are several examples out there that you can get a clear, sharp image but splotches and bleeding with backlit sensors, the panasonic fz70 is a good example of such flaws. There is always bleeding at the contrast points such as the edges of black and white which end up bleeding into each other and it looks like spilled paint even viewing at a distance. More dynamic range would help but it still won't help the over charge spill over that comes with backlit sensors. The Sony RX100 mark 4 sensor has stepped filters in front of the sensor so it filters out extraneous light. The stepped filter sensor has some old style low light CCD level shadow capture that can be brought out in lightroom with almost no noise increase. Normal backlit sensors have problems with hair or fur where the edge between the hair and the background will often get filled in with blocky jpeg artifact like fog and actually bleed into the hair or background. I held a standard 58mm uv haze filter in front the the fz70 lens and it cleared up about half the fuzzyness outdoors on indoor fluorescent light included.

If the backlit sensor is not pre-filtered it won't matter how good the DR or number of Mpix it has.

The Sony RX100 IV is a 20 mpix but it has a stacked filter sensor. The only difference is that the sony stacked pre filters limit interference so that the sensor has less partial exposure points and overly bright points to deal with so you get a sharper image. The downside is that the sony cameras in this thread are rather expensive and quick & easy access to settings on the Sony cameras is almost non existent. Which is one reason i hope the new Pentax FF camera is a dslr with room for proper dials and programmable buttons but not in the K-s1 configuration.

As for the A7rII vs Pentax FF. Hard to say just yet the problem with sony are the lens matchings. I did the A6000 lens test and there is such a large difference in performance between lenses with a sony that it is entirely possible that the Pentax FF with the same sensor will be better. Yes i am aware that we are talking about a FF vs Crop sensor but you have to start somewhere and comparing it to a 645d/z isn't any better.

Skimming through the pentax ff forum threads i did noticed that there wasn't much mention of if the FF pentax will be a mirrorless or dslr.

It will probably be dslr and i am fine with that. So long as the FF camera is still weather sealed, has good internal IS, takes and adapts to the older lenses (within reason), can take my sigma 50mm 1.4 art lens, has built in flash (for the love of photography "NO GPS" ), good battery life, e.t.c.

The LCD screen i wouldn't go much passed 1.2 million pix as you really are not going to get a proper rendition of a 42mpix image on a 3 inch screen. Even old 10mpix images look good on a small lcd camera screen but not as good once transferred.

The A7rII is ok but it does not have the cold weather ability of the pentax. Same can be said of the A6000.

After the recent Pentax blunders of the K-s1 and the recall of K-3 II GPS unit. Pentax had better get this right the first time.

I won't speculate on how the FF Pentax will look as i don't particularly care about esthetics.

I've desired a FF Pentax for a long time but keeping expectations low. Very low.

Not quite sure what to make of this one.... Yet.

I would prefer to have much better image quality than be a "Hey look at me i am all stylish" which seems to be the attempt at marketing this model. No top lcd, button placement is dubious much like the fuji x-s/t1. I didn't see an " official " spec stating it being weather sealed for either the camera and or kit lens, however it probably is.

I'l wait for a few decent sample photos and actually handling it before making any decisions.

For the time being the k-5 II/IIs seems the better choice, or on the lower end or at least the more point & shoot of the K-30/50.

pentax k200d with kit lenses autofocus woking in manual mode?

Hi. I fixed the problem with the switch. It turned out to be the metal tab that lifts the slider trips the switch and drops the screw auger. It was popped or bent out of the notch on the slider.

It's working for the time being. This was a recent purchase and i'm guess that the previous owner tried to force the MF/AF switch and from what i could see of the tab/slider arrangement it wouldn't take much to pop that metal tab out of the slot.

Now if i could only keep the dust and cat fur off the mirror and prism.

Thanks again.

Thanks Arkav. With the mount ring off i could see the switch (actual electronics part ) and the tab that hooks onto the outside MF/AF sliding tab. I can switch the switch to manual so that works but the tab inside that normally does this looks way out of position. I never dropped the camera so how this happened is a mystery for the time being.

Thanks.

Yep tried that didn't work. Thanks. BTW that AF auger screw is easy to move and lightly springy no jambed parts.

I'm guessing it's the switch as it won't reveal anything to the camera itself when switched. I assume it's an electronic lift motor the pulls the AF actuator in and out?
For the moment i have setup the OK button as an AF lock and it does act like a manual mode of sorts but only with a timer.

One thing i can tell you that even when pressed down into the frame with the lens on (piece of wax paper and tape) it still spins the actuator in MF switch mode (quick test). with an AF lens on.

It's odd though that if it use my old pentax p3n lens in Tv shift & aperture ring configuration mode the actuator won't turn. Strange.

Hello. I have a k200d and i don't remember if this is normal but even when i flick the side switch to manual focus mode the autofocus is still working, I can still focus manually but the motor is fighting me. Even if it's a minute amount of autofocus it is a problem for long exposure times particularly what taking photos of the night sky.

I put all the setting into full manual an the AF is still fighting me. I don't have a problem with my old 35mm pentax lenses on the k200d and that's because they obviously have no motors.

Thank You.

P.S. Yes i can lock the AF by holding down the OK button on the back of the camera but that's useless for taking long low light exposures.

More of less yes. However the k20d has a couple low light tricks that my k-30 does not. Not to mention the k20d has a top lcd which is useful for basic setting instead of using live view. I tried a few test shots, night time long exposures between my k20d and my k30. The k20d was quite a bit better at the same settings. As far as landcapes the k-30 is a bit better than the k20d. The K-5 has my interest for my next camera so long as the low light examples i have seen are actually for real.

The video of the K-30 or 50 is quite good. Good accurate colour for water and melatics as well as skin tones and does a decent job on glass.
