Quick question....is this contest open to those outside the US? I'm in Australia with a K-50 and it sure would be an awesome replacement...given mine has already been repaired once :)

Without being an expert or having huge amounts of experience, I'd be looking at the ISO 3200 the 1/1000 shutter speed, at the beach with lots of glare and reflections, at almost midday

When mine failed I did the "continuous shooting fix" for a few months but eventually that also failed to solve the issue. Luckily the agent here in Australia agreed to fix the issue free of charge, well outside any warranty period and to this day, all good.

If it is showing "F----------" at least it's not just taking black photos due to ABF :)

Contact your local Pentax agent regards the repairs. I had my K-50 repaired free of charge by the Australian agent years after the warranty expired.

I tried that and it did work for a while, then inevitably had to send in for repair. Could get you out of trouble if you were on a shoot and just needed to keep it alive for a little while longer.

Just an update on my K-50.
Mine was bought in 2015 and now has captured over 12000 images. When the dreaded ABF occurred, I took it to C.R.Kennedy who are the Australian agents for Pentax. One week later my camera was returned, repaired and at no cost to me. My advice (particularly if you are in Australia) is contact the agent and see how you go. Mine was repaired well out of warranty and with 12000 images for no cost. No point me stuffing around trying to fix it myself when the agent obviously stands behind their product.

I've had a chance to do some testing.
Set mode to M, Aperture wide open, 1sec shutter and AF off.
When I pressed the shutter release the aperture closed right down to nothing.

Hi, Set the camera with settings that you know will produce a photo. All you get is completely black photos. Continue shooting with the same settings and with some luck, after 15-20 shots it may come good and you get the photo you expected in the first place.
Change lens, makes no difference.
This thread is full of users with exactly the same issues.

Hi Everyone, well it seems that my K-50 has developed the ABF issue as well. Has anyone in Australia had it repaired by C.R.Kennedy and if so, what did they sting you for it?

I am involved in flyball as well and quite often take my camera along. Good to see you supporting Maximum Velocity Flyball Club as well by the way.
I always pre-focus. If I am looking for box turn shots I pre-focus just infront of the box, if I am looking for jump shots, I focus on the jump and wait for the dog to approach. Flyball is easier to shoot that agility as with flyball, you always know exactly where the dog is going to be so can catch it in focus.

As for the dog in the first shot.........I also race a Puli. Pulik are incredibly hard to catch in focus as if you set your shutter speed to freeze the dog, the corded coat is always traveling much faster and then you suffer motion blur.

Just my thoughts.

Just a quick question, does the failure effect ALL K-50s or just a certain production range or from a particular location? I have a K-50 and so far, never had an issue.

Hi, I did some videoing last night with my K-50. Is there a file size limit or video duration setting as it turned itself off after about 10 minutes.
Camera was set on a tripod and set to record.
Thanks

Maybe a silly newbie statement but is it a focus issue or motion blur? Could there be another setting that isn't correct that is giving the impression it is out of focus but is actually blur caused by a slower than ideal shutter speed?

The photo was taken on a whale watch cruise this year. I'll have to admit that there is a lot of luck in a shot like that. As you have said, there is no indication when and where they will breach.

What are the advantages of upgrading the firmware? Is it just to be able to use the new lenses they mention or what are the other benefits?

Hi everyone. I have been a member here for a while having owned a Pentax X90 for many years. After many years of trouble free use, I decided to upgrade and so on the weekend took delivery of a new K-50 with the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses.
Haven't had much chance to get used to it yet but as a brand new DSLR user can't understand why I didn't upgrade years ago :)
Who knew....... :) I understand that both lenses are "kit" lenses but the increase in quality over the X90 is remarkable.
