A recent Hewysurf Photography photo project was doing Surfing Portraits in the surf for a photo exhibition and at local Surf Club in Australia, using the Pentax K5, Pentax K3 ii and Pentax 15mm and 10-17mm fish eye these are taken with a Dave Kelly Custom Water Housing. It means swimming out into the ocean with flippers and getting in real close, usually a metre away and freezing the action using high setting 1/2000 or so and manual settings and hyper focus. It incorporates a bit of danger with the surfer coming towards you, the wave closing over you and the housing hitting you!!! Also it always hard to get all in focus okay and tricky with water drops on the housing port and changing light, sun location and of course in my area the presence of sharks!! I've also attached a photo of the housing and a link to my instagram site..Login ? Instagram |

Tropical storms have started pre summer up north in Australia with late evening light storms across the ocean, this one was particularly wild bringing down trees and roofs. Had my tripod and camera on my front deck that overlooks a nature reserve, retreating for safety after every flash of lightning...

A few water and land based shots from a photo shoot for the Loggerheads Malibu Classic at Scotts Head. I used the Pentax K5 and 15mm for the water shots with a Dave Kelly Water Housing and Pentax K3ii with Sigma 50-500mm for the land shots. Had a Surf Art Show with other surf artists at the local Bowlo which sold a few shots. more photos on my face book page at: Hewysurf-ocean and surf photography by Chris Hewgill - Home | Facebook |

A difficult shot of a surfer in a tube on a dangerous rock break wave in Australia. This action shot was taken hand held on a rock precariously perched close to the ocean, I used a method of holding my elbows together to reduce lens movement, although this lens is heavy and coupled with that I had to race to safety every now and then from exploding swells. The surfer's yellow board also highlights the colour against the wave, which is inches from rocks underneath the wave..

Ochre Sunrise
Lots of patience in this shot, waited pre dawn for a rare cloud formation at sunrise on Shelley Beach Nambucca Heads.. the red sunrise and clouds indicated an approaching storm. A small window of opportunity before wind and rain, gave me unique colour and light. Bit of post production in light room to bring up the light and ocean red colour reflection, but basically as I saw it. Set up the tripod for a low shot..Hewysurf | Surf Photographer |

Recent big swell hit our mid north coast and I did a shoot for a few of the lads towing in at a local reef break, not for the faint hearted as it's metres from rocks. I like this one as the surfer is surrounded a maelstrom of foam. Taken by Pentax K3ii 1/800 F14 with the old Bigma about it's sweet spot @ 400. I've got this in a local cafe as a mural.. Hewy

I stick my Pentax's- K5/K3/K3ii in the pictured Dave Kelly Custom Housing. Here's a few recent surf water shots using the Pentax 10-17mm and Pentax 15mm. Pentax Cameras are great for water shots, tough weather sealed and can take a bump. I set them all all manual focus preset, with water housing dials allowing for shutter speed, F stop, ISO and review. Also have fish eye port, flat port for 15mm/70mm and zoom port for 18-55mm/100mm. Couple of recent tube shots using the Pentax K5 and Dave Kelley Water Housing, the housing is all set up for simple operation with dials for all manual settings, I change the settings depending on light and conditions. I plan for the session by pre focussing at around 3' (sticky tape lens) for the fish eye set at 10mm for in the tube shots, I have a pistol grip button attached to the shutter on high continuous mode. These shots are on a local beach break at around 4' to 5' low tide, I did take a few wipeouts getting the in the barrel view pics. Pentax cameras are really suited to surf and ocean work and I'm still surprised the lack of photographers taking them in the water, they are tough little beasts..Hewysurf | Surf Photographer |

Photo of ocean foam hitting a shallow beach sandbar. It's a difficult shot as you are close to the action and need a water housing to protect the camera and lens from saltwater. I waited for an overcast day to add contrast between the foam and sky, with all setting manual so I can change them to suit light and speed..cheers Hewy..

Handheld Pentax K3 Aerial photo taken from a helicopter with door open over the coast of the beautiful Nambucca Heads on the Mid North Coast of Australia. Difficult shot as the helicopter was moving fast and there was changeable clouds and light. This is used as a Tourism photo for the area..

Recently I produced some large mural prints for a local major tourist and service centre, all taken with Pentax K3 and Pentax K5 and mix of lenses, there was lots of work to edit the right images to suit big format sizes, with murals 7.5m x 3m (Collage), 3.6m x 2.6m (Beach) and 2.8m x 2.1m (Pandanus). I've done similar images for local cafes in perplex glass, canvass and frames, but these were done on wallpaper material and have come out pretty good on colour and image quality, considering the size. It was pretty competitive to get my images in the mix, but I'm stoked I had the right coastal photos needed for the coastal tourism focussed centre.

Late afternoon violent storm front hits the north coast of Australia. I set up just before the rain to capture the green low light hitting the ocean waves framed by the angry black storm front...few quick shots and a run for shelter..

Capturing a early morning sunrise with movement of the wave foam onto the golden morning lit sand. Set up with the Pentax K5 in water housing to protect from saltwater with a small gorilla tripod on housing to get the low angle shot. Lots of trial and error to get the sea foam washing into the beach..

Green back storm waves off the coast of Australia hit a rock shelf and explode in the air, reflecting the green oncoming storm. Taken from the protection of a headland cliff, with handheld zoom on the K3 on manual settings, ready to run just in case the storm hit and I ducked for shelter..

Taking your Pentax K3 into the ocean is not the usual photographic recommended exercise, but this type of ocean/water photography is what I love and the tough Pentax K3 is ideal.
All my shots are taken with the Pentax K3 in a Dave Kelly custom made water housing with custom knobs and buttons to change the speed, F stops and ISO in the surf if needed. Focus is manually set with the camera on manual with two housing ports available: one Dome Port for the Pentax 10-17mm fish eye and one Flat Port for the Pentax 70mm or 18-55mm Pentax Lens. A typical manual setting for surf photography will be 1000/F8 ISO 200 which will capture a fast moving surfer whilst still give a good depth of field on the fish eye, set at around 10-12mm. The manual focus is set for around a dangerous three feet as you have to get in close and personal with the fish eye. (I sticky tape the lens focus). With the longer lenses, you keep them as dry as possible and I often take shots off a surfboard or paddleboard from a distance.
A hassle in the ocean is water drops on the ports, so I lick the port with saliva (yuck) to get it free of drops and duck into the water prior to every shot.
Another type of ocean photography is the specialised underwater wave photos and the split water above and below water shots, all these have there own best settings with lots of experimentation to get keeper shots. Here are a few different examples of my water shots as well as a photo of the K3 in water housing with a link to my web page for further photos and shots of my bloody expensive obsession: Hewysurf | Surf Photographer |

Tourism summer photo shoot in Nambucca Heads with a local surfer posing with a small Christmas Tree as a wave folds over him. Had a few goes before getting the shot, with hassles with water drops and timing and too many laughs, but the K3 in a Dave Kelly Water Housing pulled through again. The Chrissy Tree was highlighted in Lightroom...

Summer has just hit in Australia and with that long hot days and beautiful sunrises affected by a early bush fire season. I waited patiently for the pre-dawn and the orange and blue light over the Broom's Head Beach, the result was a cracker dawn, filtered over the rock wall and framed by the tropical pandanus tree...

This photo is a split water/surf technique with the photo taken above and below the ocean water line. In this case it takes a compromise between two exposures, with above water line the main exposure. The K3 camera is in a custom water housing with preset manual focus, speed and fstop, a 3 foot hyper focus with a F11 depth of field. A lot of things can go wrong with this type of photography with water droplets (you lick the fish eye port!), exposure hassles with sun glare and water clarity. This photo came together and is used for tourism locally...and of course it helps that the water is warm and tropical here!!

It's winter time in Aussie and the Humpback Whales are migrating with their calfs off the Australian Coast. Here a Humpback Whale breaches about a half a kilometre out to sea, shot off a high headland with the big bigma zoom, it's a game of patience and timing with these big beauties...
