I hope I'm answering in the right place, but I want to come. Day late and hopefully not a dollar short, but please count me in, too. I could probably get there late Friday night, but not during the day on Friday.

Hi!

Here's the newest arrival. Thanks Sam! You're right, though, it's heavy!

Opening the box. Couldn't even wait to get inside!

What a beauty!!

Not a mark on it anywhere. The white fuzzies are from the packaging.

And then had to leave for skating lessons...

First pictures with the new lens were of course at the rink:

Definitely not something to handhold at 200mm. Gonna have to get a monopod. Did I mention that it was heavy?

But at 80mm not bad handheld:

This is one fantastic lens! I can't wait for this weekend. Hee Hee!:D:lol::D

Yeah, I know the WWII and Lincoln are back behind where the photo ends, but I thought maybe you moved around during the day and got closer. It's too bad the satellite shot didn't include that area.

The photos you have on Flickr so far are great. I've enjoyed looking through them! Some of the over-the-head photos really give a sense of how many people were around you.

Hi Mel and Mike!!

Those are very impressive. Can't wait to see the rest.

Mel, I really like your photo of the capital building in the sunrise. The colors of the sky set it off very nicely.

Mike, I think your bigma shot of the capital is very unique and the fisheye of the WWII monument really cool. I'm having trouble counting all of the people holding cameras up. ;)

Okay, where were you when this picture was taken? According to the caption it was at about 11:19 AM. :D:lol::D

Hi Mel!!

Thanks. It's mostly shoot a lot and weed out the keepers. Very time consuming, but it's a lot of fun.

Uhhhh, no. I'll live that vicariously through you and Mike.:lol::lol: Can't wait to see what you guys get, though.

Thanks Vylen! Uhhhh - not. ;)

Yes, she does a ribbon rhythmic skate. They also do ball and hoop. The hoop is really neat. Some of the skaters are good enough to through the hoop sideways on the ice so that it's spinning on edge and skate into the hoop catching it on their foot. Hard to describe, but a joy to watch.

Hope you get some cooler weather soon. 'Tis the skating season up this way so there's always some on TV. :)

I have a link to his blog and will have to go check it out. It's been a long time since I visited it.

Oh, thanks James, but I'm very sure that he just got tired of something he mastered. Glad they make you feel like dancing!!:D:D

Thanks Reeftool. I can't imagine trying to do this with film. I rarely get away from a competition with less than 500 pictures and sometimes am well into the 1000 range. Digital definitely has the advantage over film for me in that aspect.

I'd love to see a couple of yours!

Hi Heinrich!

That sunrise photo is stunning! I really love the coastline pictures, too. Makes me want to just drop everything and come visit this place, especially the last 3. Those give the sense that there is so much more to be seen and beg for the viewer to come find out all about it. :D

Thanks Jewelltrail! Seeing the skaters in the Olympic arena must be awesome. I've visited the one in Colorado Springs and it was terrific.

Yes, the lighting is a challenge. The overhead lights in all of the arenas around here are fluorescent and they flicker and phase so sometimes the ice is pink and sometimes it's blue and at others it's even yellow. Yuk! Setting the white balance point with a grey card or using the sideboards does no good most of the time.

My biggest challenge so far has been the outdoor, nighttime exhibition shows, though. The below are from last November. The one with the ribbon is my daughter. The jumping photo is one of the Jr. National Champions but I don't remember her name. And the last is the Pavilion to give you an idea of the lighting conditions.

I started out with the *istDS but the K10D has been a lifesaver with the image shake switch. That has saved so many photos it's unreal. I still use the DS, though. I leave the wide angle photos for that camera and use the K10D for following individual skaters.

Glad you liked the pictures! :)

Hi Gokenin!

My method of browsing this site is the "Today's Posts" and "New Posts" quicklinks. Threads move off of the front page of those searches very quickly. That makes it easy to miss photo posts like yours. I have to remind myself to go to the 'Post your Photos' forum more often because I hate missing beautiful pictures like this. You're very lucky to catch such a neat falcon/hawk in your yard like that. The ones that show up in my yard take flight just as soon as I point a camera in their direction. :D:D

Hi

As I mentioned to NaClH2O in the Ice challenge thread, those ice skating photos have eaten up my life over the last year. Finally got a chance to breathe. So I thought I'd update those who have been pestered with these types of photos from me over the past 4 years (and introduce those who haven't) to my daughter.

For reference, from the 2005 Christmas show, when she was 8:

She is now 12 and is 5'10.5" and still growing. Between buying jeans and new skates, I rarely ever have money left over for LBA these days. (That also changed last week, but that is a different story...).

These are from the 2008 Christmas show.

An axel jump:

A split jump (I know this is blurry, but she just threw it in. I watch the skaters constantly during practices to make sure I know their routines. That way I can make sure I get the jumps and hard moves during the competitions and exhibitions. This wasn't even at the height of the jump!)

A layback spin:

And the end of the routine:

Hopefully I can catch up with all of you as well and keep more current. :o:D

Hi LaRee!

These photos are awesome. My favorites are #2 (beautifully captured light and mood) and #4 (funky colors just make you feel good type of photo).

I'm browsing the gallery now...

You used to weld?? Photo_dad worked on a pipeline once during the summer while we were in college making ends meet. He used to come home with scratchy eyes and headaches no matter how hard he tried to not look towards the welders. Wow - flashback from way back more than I want to remember. ;):D

But that's a great thought for a mini-challenge. You ought to start a thread there - guess the song of your picture, then the person that guesses posts another...

Or, you choose the song and have people post their interpretation and then you pick the winner. They post their song and so forth...

Here's my version of the "Can't drive...55!":

Hi Charlie!

As many years as photo_dad has subjected me to watching NASCAR races, I have never seen this place. Thanks for some enlightenment! Now he tells me there is a trophy like this, too? 'Well, dear, if you want me to be interested in your sport, a little extra info is always helpful' :D:lol::D

I like the last shot the best - gives a very good idea of the size.

That's fun. I did that once for a challenge picture. Cruise control is a wonderful thing. Can you imagine getting a ticket for it though - well officer, I wasn't texting...:o:o

Yes, those 'squitos' are plentiful and vicious. Good call on that. Photo_dad compared them to swarms of bloodsucking birds - that's how big they are. But I was thinking of the ponies and the seashore when I made the suggestion.

Never been to Ocean City, so that would be cool. :D

Those skating photos eat up my life! It's a challenge to find something in my files that's not related to that!:lol:

I sometimes get the chance to lurk a bit and that's when I noticed the responses I quoted. The photo I posted was my first thought. But I'm gonna have to admit that I figured somebody would have entered a photo of 'ice cube as a lipstick'. A little more interesting and no winter required, right? (Yes, I'm blushing... :o:o;););))

Thanks also for the wire advice. Will try that next time. I kind of like the fire and ice idea and want to work on it some more in the future. Finding the time is my other daily challenge...

My entry is just a couple of ice cubes from my freezer that I played around with for the 'Opposites' challenge from the other forum:

And by the time I finished this set of pictures I was punch drunk from trying to get a string tied around the ice cubes to stay tied long enough to get the picture and keep my cat from knocking them down - even with the candle lit.

(Hey!! I FINALLY got the multi-quote thing to work!! :D:D:D)

Hi!

Assateague Island would be a really cool place, too.

Maine sounds wonderful, but I doubt I could get away for that kind of trip.

Looking forward to whatever is decided!
