Purchase dilemma - KP or new APS-C flagship?

If you don't mind sharing, how much did you purchase the KP for? Was it body only? I'm curious as I was debating between a KP vs a used K3/K5iis + lenses but i'm not finding too much luck with the camera bodies. Right now, it's about a $100-150 between some of the KP and K3/K5iis bundles i've seen (used and new!). Thanks!

Combinations with a ~$1,200 budget

Jumping back into Pentax - KP, K1, or switch to another brand?

I'm so appreciative of the many suggestions y'all have given! I was surprised to see so many comments on this thread and it's definitely given me things to think about. I'll be sticking to Pentax, but not with a KP/K1 for now.

I think that an older body K3/K5ii paired with one or two of the lens suggestions is a better fit and investment for now. As exciting as a newer Pentax camera body is since I haven't been using one for some time, I think it's best for me to just get back into taking portraits with one, get some great glass, and eventually make the decision between a fancier new Pentax body (and maybe try out some flashes) later on.

Currently scoping out one of the K3s/K5ii/s and a couple of lenses (prime, zoom, and hopefully one of them may be WR!).

I'm definitely still open to suggestions and thanks again for the help!

I'll definitely check out a few of these lenses, thanks for the suggestion! I have a FA50mm f/1.4 that I got a lot of use out of before and some have suggested the 35 and 85 to me too so i'll definitely check those out.

This was honestly one other consideration as well! A friend of mine shoots weddings with both a FF and micro 4/3rds camera (might be a panasonic gh model) and switching to that system offers some of the same options that I love about Pentax. There are some great lenses especially for portraits or travel photography in such a compact system. Great deals right now, especially on some of the lenses. Maybe in the future i'll give micro 4/3rds a go!

---------- Post added 12-05-19 at 10:26 PM ----------

Very, very true! The many options out there (and maybe too many YouTube reviews) got me caught up juuuust a tad bit in the idea of a brand spanking new camera body but I think that even the older K5iis/K3 bodies would be more than enough for what I need paired with some great glass.

---------- Post added 12-05-19 at 10:28 PM ----------

This made me go down the rabbit hole of K5IIs/K3 comparisons/searches! Great point.

---------- Post added 12-05-19 at 10:32 PM ----------

Absolutely. This helped me re-evaluate; I took a break from staring at reviews online and I think the K3 would be great.

Jumping back into Pentax - KP, K1, or switch to another brand?

Hi all,

It's been some time since i've hopped onto PentaxForums. The last time I was here, I was going into a similar debate between camera bodies and took the suggestions to try out different models. That instead led me down an interesting and fun road into taking a full break from my typical portrait photography (I used to do a lot of graduations, photos for blogs and small business) and into street photography by borrowing gear from a few friends.

It has been ~2-3 years since I actually looked into other camera gear since i've been dabbling around with Ricoh GR's, Fujifilm X-whatevers, and film cameras from friends. However, new opportunities have been coming up for me to get back into portrait photography. Jumping back into purchasing new gear has been a little overwhelming with all that's out there now (convenience of mirrorless, other DSLR models, etc) and i'm not sure if Pentax has what I might need to grow with me as I continue on. Pentax lineup has been a little confusing for me.

I will soon be moving into outdoor/studio portrait photography, product shots, and picking back up on travel photography again. In addition, i'll be heading back to school in the next year where this could serve as a side-gig to help make ends meet... and also for fun :)
If I can find Pentax gear that rivals the other brands right now, I don't see a huge reason to switch but i'm still making an investment and want to make the most of it. The temptation from other brands (and these darn Cyber Monday/week deals!!!) may be getting the best of me.

For these reasons, would investing in current Pentax offerings be a good fit for these needs in 2019? If so, KP or K1? Or other??

Why I'm considering another brand:
-Current offerings have comparable and competitive specs; in some cases, for a fraction of the cost.
-Brands like Canikon are more accessible; it's easier to do repairs and have options in case I need other lenses/accessories.
-I currently own a FA 50mm f/1.4, FA 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5, and a bunch of manual film lenses. I don't have a working camera body and haven't made a huge investment in terms of cost so making the switch wouldn't be particularly difficult barring my sentimental reasons for keeping all my Pentax gear.

KP vs K1? Budget is about ~$1,200
Going FF is tempting. I have the budget for a K1 however it is still a huge investment for me and at this time, I may only purchase the camera body (unless I find a good deal on other lenses to pair with). Whereas with the KP, I can use the additional moneys to purchase a lens or two on my list: DA 21mm, FA 77mm which i'm leaning towards.

All thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated!

Thanks so much for those links! I wish I had caught those before. If I start staring at my list between the K70 and K-S2 for too long, I think i'll go forward with getting a feel for the different cameras; these Youtube videos don't help with that very much ;)

Thanks for letting me know! I noticed the price difference and some of the reviews i've found online definitely tend to favor the DA 35 but I think i'll keep my eyes peeled for the FA version. Have you come across the Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC by any chance? In case I got the "DC" part mixed up, it's the model before the the newest "Art" version. Found one running under ~$200 and was considering it against the Pentax 35mm lenses and am wondering if it would be comparable as i've never handled any of these lenses before. It seems promising from reviews and photos but it sounds like you have experience with the DA/FA 35's.

Just a few initial thoughts

I'm looking to upgrade from my K-r and have been thinking about the K70 or the K-5iis. The specs of the K70 are tempting to me but I came across a K-5 IIs that is running a bit cheaper (~$200, good condition with shutter counts under 10K). I've been wanting to pick up a 30/35mm prime as well so the K-5 IIs option may allow me to do that sooner, but there's no rush on that part. :)

If you were upgrading from a K-r, do ya think it may be worth it to still go for the K-5IIs with the option of picking up a K70?

Upgrading from K-r - K-s2 or K70?

Hi folks!

I'm looking to upgrade my camera body and have been considering between the K-s2 and K70.

I have been traveling a bit more frequently and would appreciate something that is a bit more sturdy and reliable than my K-r which i've been having a hard time using due to aperture problems. I primarily take pictures of family and friends at get-togethers, scenery & street photography when traveling, and occasionally, portraits for folks who have fashion/travel blogs.
Currently leaning towards the K70 but I've been looking into purchasing another len as i've been primarly using the 50mm f1.4; looking for something a bit wider which is why i'm considering the lower-priced K-s2 but not sure if it's worth it to just invest in the K70.

I currently use:
FA 50mm f/1.4 prime
K-r body

Thoughts? Other models I should consider?
Your opinions are much appreciated!

-Lea

Very very late reply but thank you all for your help! I decided against getting the 40mm and have been scoping out for some deals on a 21mm, 31mm/35mm these days. :)

FA 50mm f/1.4 AND DA 40mm f/2.8 xs - to purchase or not to purchase?

Hi all!

I've just seen the Black Friday deals for some of the lenses on Adorama and BH and am having trouble deciding whether to take advantage of the drop in price for the DA 40mm f/2.8 XS pancake lens.

I currently have:
18-55mm kit lens
FA 35-75?mm f3.5-4.5 zoom (I dont get much use out of it)
FA 50mm f/1.4 prime
K-r body

The 50 is almost always attached to my K-r and I do quite a bit of traveling. I mainly use this to take pictures of family and friends at get-togethers, scenery when I travel, and occasionally, portraits for folks who have fashion/travel blogs.

I've been looking for another prime that I hope to like just as much as my 50 but more travel friendly, fast, and something that I could use in a greater range of spaces wouldn't hurt either. Sometimes in places with a lot of people, it's hard to make/find enough room to capture everything that I would like (i've been using a small point-and-shoot to compensate for this, but practically, it's hard to switch from camera to camera :o).
I think that the size and price of the 40mm are great; but would it make a difference to what I already have/what I use the 50 for? As much as I like the size of the lens, I do want to purchase something that could offer more to my selection of lenses (but within my budget! -->*low* budget)

What do you all think?
If I have the FA 50mm f/1.4, would picking up the DA 40mm f/2.8 XS be a good addition?
If not, any suggestions of something more suitable?

Your opinions are much appreciated!

Thanks! I'll be sure to try that out once it's fixed!
I've been itching to use take some shots but I still haven't sent it in to get fixed yet.
It looks almost perfect, except for a little scratch on the side. The lens works on manual, but not on autofocus unfortunately and the focus ring is tough to turn!

Hello everyone!

My name is Lea, and I am a new Pentax owner! My older brother passed his older K-r body and a FA 50mm prime that has surely seen some better days. Hopefully I can figure my way around these forums soon enough; they seem to be such a great source for information. :)
