Back in the day people would have cameras for 20 years at a time. There are cases when new tech makes it easier and more fun to take photos. In other cases new tech allows you to take pictures you would not be able to take otherwise. If you're reaching that point, don't think twice and switch. Life is too short to be frustrated by equipment. ---------- Post added 09-26-23 at 09:05 AM ---------- Also, why not have more than one system? That's what I do ;).

Taken with a 55-300 DA-L in San Diego zoo.
They are small enough to fit on top of a palm.

That's it. They simply couldn't get their Pentax gear through a retailer and looked for alternative sources.

Guys, thanks for all the suggestions and sorry about the delay. I had to catch up on some work and didn't login here for 3 weeks.
I decided to struggle a bit with da-l 55-300 and see what are the limitations. My conclusion is that it can work, although I would like something ~2x longer, and something sharp wide open. But 55-300 will do for now.
Once I figure out what are the most important factors in birding I will jump for a super telephoto lens and maybe a body to match. What I learned that K-3+55-300 can work, although there will be some missed shots. I might get better with time. As of now it seems important factors in, rough order, seem to be: lighting, focal length, steady hands, AF depth-tracking, buffer size, FPS, lens sharpness, high ISO noise, AF tracking, sensor resolution. I will spend a few more sessions and see if the list will get reshuffled.
Here are some shots from my first-day birding, K-3 + 55-300 DA-L, mostly 300mm F8, iso 400-1600, shutter 1/2000-4000, hand holding, but in low position.

I really liked four thirds. I had five of their cameras:
E-300, E-500, E-510, E-3 and E-1
And four lenes:
14-45, 40-150 F3.5, and later 11-22 and 14-54, when the prices went down.
I only shot the E-300 and E-510, the rest were bought recently out of nostalgia, and because they costed pennies. I got some of the best shots using their kit lenses (14-45, 40-150), because I simply couldn't afford more when I was in college.
E-3 with 40-150mm F3.5-4.5
E-300 with a 14-45mm kit lens:
E-300 with a 14-45mm kit lens:
I am seriously considering getting an E-3 for $150 and filling up on SHG zuikos just for fun, now that they are third-of-a-price and I can actually consider buying them, instead of just hoping.

I wonder if ISO figures are inflated, and if yes, by how much. Do we know of any sensor tech breakthrough that would warrant a drastic increase in a sensor signal?

You could get a used sony A7, Sony A850, or Canon 5D MK i, Canon 1Ds and have enough money to buy a couple of inexpensive primers or a decent zoom (more so with canons). This would be my cheaper alternative if you needed a fullframe, could sacrifice some performance and only had a $1000. You could get a 5D Mk i for some $350 and perhaps even a basic non-is L-lens (24-105 F4?), or a 35F2+85F1.8 for the remainder.
If you have a $1000 for the body and could buy some lenses for the rest (i.e. switch systems), then a used D610 is less than $1000, but NIkon lenses are pricey. I think I would go with a 5DMkii in that case, which is around $700-800, but has generally cheaper lenses in my experience, especially second hand.

Here's from my 16-50 invoice from KEH, from last october, with 180 days warranty, good sdm, EX+ condition for $400, with tax and shipping. I agree $300 is a more realistic price for one with a broken SDM.

Watch out if they heat up. It's basically a wax in a form of film, so it can be a pain to take off if it heats up nearby its melting temperature.

I always found the Pentax 2000mm F13.5 to be a pretty good portrait lens on APS-C. Here's one of the shots: |

The adapters are the same, but autofocus systems differ. E-M1 is the only olympus in lineup that has an on-sensor PDAF for tracking and four-thirds lenses. This means the FT lenses focus about as fast on an E-M1 as on the old dSLRS. The tracking AF is supposed to be pretty good as well, and miles ahead of CDAF systems in E-M5 line. One thing of note is that E-M1 had a recent firmware update, which supposedly made the tracking AF a lot better, but this wouldn't be mentioned in online reviews. E-M1 II is probably going to be excellent, because they can utilize 20 megapixels of contrast data and PDAF at the same time, and they dedicate a whole image processor just to AF.

K-3II, built better, no aperture motor problems, built in GPS with astrotracer, more stable and silent shutter. All of those will be useful to you. ---------- Post added 10-11-16 at 06:24 PM ----------
If I was to wait, I would wait for the rumored mirrorless - even if just for a fast and accurate single-point CDAF.

I would skip the DA35, if you have a DA40 and a DA50. There is no added benefit. I would save the money for a DA15 or something else that's wide.
