That's what I thought. Seems to work like a charm.

I put tape over the contacts, and it worked. I can look at the aperture when shooting and it stays where set, instead of opening up all the way.

Well, that sounds like doing this gives me what I want then, no?

I was doing some interval photography and was unhappy to see how blurry the pictures were. I discovered that in Av/auto ISO mode the camera was changing the manually set f-stop to wide open. Reading on the forums, I found that you can tape over the contact points to the lens and keep your f-stop. I did this and it worked. My question is this: Under this scenario how is the camera setting the exposure and ISO? Automatically, and generally correct? I can't setup the camera in full M exposure mode, because with interval shooting the light conditions change over time and I'd prefer if the camera adjusted automically. But because it is always shooting landscapes, I think f8 will be fine for sharpness..

Here's a link to the trip highlights, and here is a link to the k-01 pics. You'll probably notice the lens flare in some of them. I didn't use a hood, but I wonder under the circumstances if that would have mattered.

The K-5 would be a fair alternative. It's hard to say if the extra sealing would help. If there was condensation inside on the sensor then perhaps. If it was due to cold, then likely not. The k-01 is lighter and has a built in intervalometer. I'll see what happens when testing the k-01 in the freezer and if the problem occurs then I'll have to come up with some way to heat the camera.

Yeah, it just costs $1000 every time I do this! I'll be sure to post a link here to my website when I've got the photos from this expedition sorted out.

There seems like a lot of different opinions. Since the camera seems fine now, I wonder if the combination of temperature and condensation inside the camera body on the sensor accounts for it. This was the first time I've tried a MILC. There is a lot of big empty space inside, unlike the compact cameras I've been using, which perhaps are better sealed? It's actually warmer at 100k feet than lower down, but still freezing. Perhaps I will try putting the camera in the freezer with a flashlight pointed at it to see what happens.

OH, and I just tried the camera and it works fine. Perhaps that is telling.

Well, you can see from the attached photo that the quality image the K01 was producing was quite good before it crapped out. The balloon was not that high 65 minutes in, relatively speaking. It topped out at 100,000 to 105,000 feet. It took pics the whole 3 hour flight, but after 65 minutes they all looked screwed up like that. Perhaps it was the cold (I didn't have a temp logger), but I wish I had a technical explanation so i knew what to do next time! I thought I had found the perfect camera for my balloon flights, long battery life, interchangeable SLR lenses, built-in intervalometer, huge sensor. It was a real disappointment.

I bought a K01 to use on a weather balloon flight for interval shooting. I tested the camera before hand on the ground twice and managed to get hours of photos. I had a 28mm manual focus lens on it. It took great shots once in the air, but after 65 minutes all of the remaining photos look like the one I've attached. The camera was in a heated space. I'd be surprised if it was the cold, though, since I've used many different lithium powered cameras in the past and have never encountered anything like this.
Does anybody know what this is symptomatic of?

I'm bumping this thread, hopefully somebody can help. I bought a k-01 and an SMC manual focus 28mm lens. It sounds from some threads like this combo can work, but I am getting the F-- error on the screen, which I believe means the camera and kens cannot communicate. Is it possible the lens is too old and doesn't have the right electronic connections even though it is a manual focus lens?
