Zoom Lens Won't Change Focal Length in EXIF Data
Posted By Not a Number

Check the screws on the lens mount if they are still secure. Likely the focal length sensor (typically a set of electrical contacts) is damaged. There may be other damage to the focus and zoom mechanisms that may take time to manifest. Optical elements may be out of alignment as well.

Only way to know for sure is to open it up to inspect for damage and put it on an optical bench.

The body may have other damage as well.

FYI, the Head of Marketing for Ricoh Imaging in Germany is present in the German Pentaxians forum and e.g. ran a thread "Who actually shoots film?" two weeks before the announcement. He follows discussions, relays announcements, occasionally comments on product topics to correct misinformation and otherwise describes his role as providing input (e.g. having put a FF TC on the wish list for quite a while) and feedback to the development group, but not having a say in decision making.

@bdery and @wsself I think gaijin discussion boards, with all their dissent, trolls and public ignorance make any traditional Japanese corporation types shake their head. There are Pentax ambassadors who used to post here, but not anymore. There's only so much unrelated "Why are you showing off a new K-3 or GR when I want a 24mm prime?" crap they can put up with. :)

The signal to noise ratio of a place like DPR is far worse, to a logical, dignified Japanese executive it would be page after page of combative, uninformed babble.

Youtuber Tony Northrup once gave his expert's opinion that we shouldn't have the K-1, that making a full frame camera instead of concentrating on APS-C was a mistake by Hoya. That's how unrepresentative his - and any social media influencer's - views are.

Pentax has instead always consulted its own domestic audiences (see the clubhouse meetings) and got feedback and testing from established professional Japanese Pentaxians like Kimio Tanaka and Yoshiaki Kobayashi in developing anything.

I have seen the western Ricoh ambassadors say they simply get sent a pre-release camera to try, it just appears, they are not counted as being 'inner circle'. It's all happened beforehand.

We choose the advantages and disadvantages of buying a foreign brand, one in particular that is and has always been strongly Japanese in personality. Asahi Optical company who made the Pentax brand has been around since 1919.

Anyone not understanding that will forever be scratching their head as to why they are thinking of resurrecting film, doing a monochrome K-3, and releasing so many blingy accessorized models. The coloured Q series back in its day seems to have been a hit amongst younger Japanese folk.

These don't come from the wants of a Gen Z European, a millenial American, or a middle aged Aussie like myself.

Pentax only releasing 1.5 new cameras and a handful of lens is likely what a camera brand needs to do nowadays in order to stay above water or maintain a small profit. Of course I'm keeping this statement i context of the entire camera industry which certainly has been a pond of water that seems to keep getting smaller. Some companies, like Nikon, have layed off workers and shut factories in order to get to a point where they produce less product(s) from smaller operations...

Why a point & shoot film camera is being considered first from Pentax - ?

My 22 yo daughter has been using a cheap film P&S for a couple of years. Last Xmas her gift request was a better old P&S because the new cheap P&S cameras regularly malfunction. I found her a good copy of a late 1980's Nikon AF3 which she loves. She has the latest smart phone and is an avid social media user. So 'why does she want a film P&S camera" I hear you ask. Well, I have asked this many times myself - why bother with the poorer IQ, expense and delay of film???

She uses her film camera for more special occasions - friends 21st parties or a special trip somewhere with friends. I have offered my GR3 many times - surely the compactness and image quality will do the job but it's always a "no thanks dad". She also has several friends who also use film cameras, so I am not surprised that Pentax/Ricoh is talking about a camera for this market.

The main reason my daughter loves her film P&S is the excitement she feels when she sends her film in for processing and she gets her e-prints back (she gets a scan back rather than prints). In an era of instant gratification, she loves the thrill of seeing the photos she took 1/3/6 months earlier and being reminded of the occasion and then sending the photos on to her friends to re-live the moment too.

Secondly, she likes the look of the film photos. Her phone camera is so sharp and good, she actually enjoys the contrary look of the film's lower resolution and IQ and grain. The weak in-camera flash also adds to the vintage look.

To a lesser extent, she also likes the cache of having a genuine vintage camera to take her vintage photos with.

Good copies of these old P&S cameras are in high demand on ebay etc. I paid $270 AUD (~$180USD) for my daughter's. These old camera's are slowly wearing out and with no spares available, I am not surprised that Ricoh/Pentax are looking at filling this niche. I think a Pentax brand compact, simple to use, film P&S with a half decent flash would be attractive to this young group and would introduce them to the Pentax brand. The fact that Pentax is a real deal vintage brand that is relatively unknown aka exotic, might work in this market niche. I look forward to seeing Ricoh/Pentax bringing a modern 'Nikon AF3' to market.

First they'd have to sell me a K-P.

They aren't made in the same plant by the same people, unless of course the woodworkers who make the handles are also trained in camera software creation. When I did my journeyman's in cabinetmaking, Camera programming wasn't an elective. It would be an interesting addition to the calendar though.

"Wanted: Woodworker capable of running a small woodworking product line who also has Camera programming skills. "

There has to be one somewhere right?

But I digress. :D

What is the 70mm Ltd lens for?

I recommend you check this thread: Post your Telephoto Landscapes! - PentaxForums.com

I have the 70mm smc version, had it for years. Compared it with the DA* 50-135mm and found it to be a step up for sharpness from what is an excellent zoom lens.

I kept it despite picking up a K-1 as it does work on the K-1 providing softer edges with a natural looking vignette if shooting at faster apertures.

It's getting more use since I picked up the K3-3 and the HD version of the 43mm LTD. It is a lightweight kit for the motorbike when I also add the DA 15/4 smc.

How can you use it? Here's three examples:

1. Action
Bluesy Rider by noompty, on Flickr
2. Telephoto seascape
Pastel reflections on the wading pool by noompty, on Flickr
3. Sunrise boat photos
Sailing the inferno by noompty, on Flickr
I have used my 70 using extension tubes. It became manual focus but it's not an expensive option if you decide to go with the 70 and also want to use it for macro.

You do have to go through the exercise, Jim, I guess like an infantryman getting to know his rifle well enough to reassemble blindfolded or whatever the test used to be.

You have to know by looking at the scene, straight away what ISO is going to result in unusable pictures, and the same with shutter speed, because it's an exposure triangle.

The aperture and sharpness are real weaknesses here, because they're consumer grade lenses.

Some people defend such lenses, I think they're using the wrong golf club, and you've seen it too with those crops you posted.

Of course, we want Santa to give us a 400mm f2.8.

He's never responded to my letters each December, though, miserable old b*****! :)

I'm sure you know much more than I about wedding photography, so I'll just leave it with memories of the tog who shot my parents' wedding and later my cousin's. He always wore tails, was always polite and affable and his skill was never in doubt – my brother still has the portrait of our grandfather from way back; perfectly lit, exposed, composed and printed and most of all it portrays my grandfather as we knew him. He shot on a Rolleiflex: you know, the TLR, I don't even know if it was the 3.5 or 2.8 lens for that matter. He was never short of work because everyone knew he produced the goods, time after time. Others with better gear (Bronica, Hasselblad, best quality glass) tried to muscle in but they couldn't clearly surpass his work and never managed to supplant him.

I also think we've strayed farrrrrrr from the original thread topic.

Sony will sell parts to consumers or others. It’s simple and easy to obtain repair parts if you are inclined to diy. As for warranty work, as far as I know they use Precision also in the USA. I thought they had some additional warranty shops but I can’t locate a list right now.

The majority of wedding photos are formals and reception images. Getting photos at the ceremony is fine, but pretty easy to do without getting in the way with a 70-200 f2.8. Of course, you get those photos, but the formals and receptions are where your images either stand out or fail.

Focus-On-Stars
Posted By ProfessorBuzz
Replies: 23
On a camera lens "infinity" is just a marking on the focus ring. It's never perfect.

It's not the light years. Telescope focus works the same way as any other optical system - it doesn't have a factory-set perfect focus.
Usually there is a point where the "spot size" of the star image is as small as possible, eg it is a tiny circle at the image focal plane.
Ideally you would bring the detector (image sensor, film) to that point, by moving it mechanically.
The problem is that mechanically you can't always do that, so you move the optics closer or further from the focal plane where the detector is. That affects the spot size, and thus how sharp the star is.

With any optical system, eg a camera lens or telescope, one of the biggest factors affecting focus is temperature.

When the temperature is low, the lens assembly will contract - this includes the metal or plastic that holds the optical glass, and the glass itself.
When its warm, the assembly will expand.
So focus will shift a tiny amount, based on this expansion or contraction.
Since stars are nearly a point-source (tiniest possible spot), small errors in focus become more obvious, as the arc spanned by the star at the focal plane is close to the pixel size. (eg wide lenses, the stars will be smaller than the pixel; in long lenses, the stars will span anywhere from 1 to 8 pixels, typically).

The wavelengths of light are also a factor. e.g. blue light vs red light come to a focus at a different place, unless the optical designer has compensated for it. This is why you may see colored fringes around a star.

The atmosphere is another factor - light is refracted less when straight overhead vs going through the thicker amount of air toward the horizon.

When working with really wide lenses, if you point it straight up, and you focus on stars directly overhead, the ones further away from the zenith are going to be less sharp, due to both the atmospheric refraction, and any imperfections in the optical design.

The last thing is that the detector (sensor or film) is usually quite flat; and the optical designer has to come up with a lens design that will take the curved hemisphere of the sky and try to flatten it out as much as possible. Since every lens is a compromise (performance vs cost vs available optics), you will often find the edges of the field are less sharp than the central area.

So "infiinity" is just where the optical designer has designated the place where the lens is likely to be sharpest at far distant targets.
You'll notice most modern lenses don't have a "hard stop" at infiniity - there is a bit of play, and that is to allow the camera to adjust the lens a bit under or over the infinity marking.

I hope that helps.

LOL, I have almost 102,000 shutter counts on my K-1. No wonder my back-focus button fell off. It really sucks for the original poster having problems with multiple cameras. What I most dislike about using Pentax cameras in the U.S. is that Ricoh does not really seem to care about service with just one authorized repair center in the U.S. . Ricoh won't sell parts to anyone except Precision, and Precision won't sell users parts unless they do the repair at their facility. That really sucks when you have a broken camera or lens with an easily replaceable part and they want to charge a fortune to fix it (plus shipping). Don't tell anyone, but I use my Pentax K-1 and K-3 cameras professionally for events and portrait sessions. LOL, people come up to me and comment on my nice equipment, but they would be appalled to know that it was not actually professional.

I believe Precision Camera is the only "Authorized" repair facility in the U.S.

Yes they are Bloody expensive!!

If I have other failures I will have to check other repair shops, like KEH or Advanced.

---------- Post added 02-17-23 at 06:52 AM ----------

I am sure other brands have their issues. Still, I like Pentax, not planning on changing brands.

Once handled a Nikon D7500 from a friend. ((Not knocking Nikon)) Felt like a toy, just my impression. She takes great images with it.
Not surprised at the K50 aperture fail, the second time pissed me off and that was Precision using the same old solenoid type. Really, I should have know that is what they would use, I guess .
The K3 was a bit of a shock but has worked flawless since repaired.

K1 really put a dent in my trust. I will tell you, that dial had always seemed really "Stiff" .

Such as it is. I'll get over it.

I use a somewhat older version of Photoshop so don't have that, but I do sometimes use Gigapixel AI. In some cases it works pretty well, but in others not so much. A cropped image of a moving animal is not really the intended source image for these applications.

There is a general tendency for Pentaxians to argue that if they don't use a feature (video, flip screen, auto focus, different jpeg settings) that they should be left off the camera. It is a somewhat short sighted idea of camera design -- the whole point is that a camera needs to appeal to multiple different people, some of whom will actually use the feature that you don't think is important.

It is akin to showing up at a meal and getting angry with the host for setting both spoons and forks at all the table settings because you "only plan to use a fork" for this meal. It's OK to have a camera with features that I don't use and it actually doesn't add to the cost, assuming that it increases the overall sales.

1. Need to select B mode
2. Astrotracer menu is not in Custom Menu in either K-3 or KP
5. "proper exposure" is a bit short of useful guidance for night shots
Helpfully has overlooked any Astrotracer calibration steps.
Possibly a follow up question to ask how it proposes an alignment with the celestial pole - this is nonsense! (got itself mixed up with a tracking mount it seems)

I can see why they call it artificial intelligence, it's well short of real intelligence!

The thing is, if the Photo Rumors guy really had access to that magazine, I’m sure he would have put much more emphasis on the other manufacturer interviews. Basically all Japanese manufacturers got the same treatment, with a multi-page interview.

Anyway, when I put the effort into these summaries, I try to keep in mind all the good natured people who read them, and not focus on the people trying to take advantage or just want to whine. I’m sure there are lots of people viewing silently, who are put off engaging because of a few negative individuals who take over every thread.

I think that this is an excellent take, with many good ideas. It's great to have brand ambassadors, but they need to be present on social media. Every brand ambassador they have should always be working on a Youtube series about their current project, and then cross posting to other social media. It's very evident that by today's standards, the brand ambassadors need to be communicating and engaging with the userbase. A static website isn't enough any longer. Pick brand ambassadors that are willing and able to engage on social media to promote the brand.

Yes, I've got suggestions.

That Ricoh/Pentax FB page has posts---sure---but little in the way of real engagement postings. In December it's nearly all sales, which has some logic, but then falls off in January; and In previous months it's thin. There's a good number of posts about the GR cameras, but where's the stuff about every other camera and lens in the Pentax lineup? There need to be substantive postings that engage Pentaxians first---to arrest bleed. And these should be the things that they have already done some of which indeed were engaging: talking about the Limited series, for instance. It just needs to continue. Interviews are good things to do, so do them with everyone who works at Pentax. And have a more robust presence on YouTube, which IMO is a better platform for the kinds of things that would really engage viewers. Do more with ambassadors. Talk about Pentax accessories. & etc.

The Euro FB site has more postings, but the zoom on every image is annoying and doesn't do anything to show how/why a Pentax camera/lens combo is used. And it's not much different than Instagram.

I think there's a ton of substantive stuff that could be done here that wouldn't involve secrets of what's being worked on---although if you're working on a new body I don't see the danger in saying so. If you're worried about current sales then don't say exactly what body you're working on, just say you're actively doing so. Meanwhile have the designers discuss their design process and philosophies. Go out on a walk with them with their cameras and they can say what things they particularly like about them.

In addition, run some photo contests, with the winners getting a month or 6 week's virtual exhibition of a selection of their images on the Pentax website and maybe some customized swag acknowledging that.

IOW, just be a little creative and imaginative. Pentax has done this before, but they seem to have this attitude of "been there, done that" and phobia about repeating themselves. As a former college professor let me tell you, there's almost no such thing as too much repetition. And the best thing is to say things multiple times but slightly differently each time.

As for attracting new users, that's going to be a slow process. Hate to say it but having much stronger video is part of the key to that I think. But having a more enthusiastic and less nervous/fraught Pentaxian user base (which they seem to have in Japan---I don't think it's the Japanese Pentaxians that have the angst and agita) will help with attracting new users.

As far as jumping ship? The only thing that can be done here IMO is to offer a home to folks who are dissatisfied for whatever reason with mirrorless, and show that that home is stable. The other camera makers have left the OVF field to Pentax----so, farm that field!

I'm not much of an active social-media follower, and I tend to stick with a couple of online forums and websites (I know, stuck in the previous century...). I was curious as to the extent of Ricoh Imaging's presence on social media, so I did a random survey. I probably missed some of the popular social media feeds, and I was looking mainly for English-language content.

Ricoh Imaging North America (i.e., USA) keeps a fairly active Facebook page, regular new posts. Ricoh Imaging | Facebook

Ricoh Imaging Europe - Pentax also has an active Facebook page: Pentax Photography

Instagram carries several RI/Pentax channels. I don't know how they compare to those of other manufacturers. e.g., in English: https://www.instagram.com/ricohpentax/?hl=en
Japanese language: https://www.instagram.com/pentax.jp/?hl=en

Ricoh Imaging's Australia website includes "blog" entries, but all three of them are dated January 2021.

The website of Pentax Europe appears fairly well maintained. Seems active and current, and is enticing IMHO. Features their three photographers (Ambassadors?). https://pentax.eu/

I can't say that Twitter is being exploited by Ricoh Imaging. For example, Ricoh Imaging UK: Last tweet 2020. Ricoh Imaging USA: 1 tweet in 2022?

As you all probably know, YouTube carries many photography-related channels. Searching for "Pentax" brings up a lot of videos, many of which seem to cover vintage Pentax gear but not much recent content on new products or product reviews. Ricoh Imaging did include YouTube videos to introduce their film project. In comparison, searching "fujifilm XF" yields quite a few extensive reviews (e.g., DPReview TV as well as individuals). On YouTube, based on my first impression, I'd say that Fuji, for example, gets a much more dynamic treatment than Pentax.

Anyways, not sure what this says other than Ricoh Imaging is not totally silent in the social media world, and they're attempting to engage fans and prospective users. Their announcement about the film project certainly generated a lot of buzz across many sites and channels, which has simmered down since the intro. For me personally, the current online content suits my needs, as I'm already ensconced in the Pentax world. However, other brands seem to generate more excitement, but that might be a result of their rate of new products.

Would others (e.g., @texandrews) have ideas as to how their presence could/should be enhanced, and what would be the target audiences? Is there an approach that would entice prospective Pentax newcomers? What nature of online presence and content might convince current users of other brands to 'jump their ship' to the Pentax boat?

- Craig
