@Tanzer - you didn't overlook my location - it wasn't in my profile, but I took your suggestion and updated it.
Thanks to everyone else for the welcome.
Actually, thinking of photography and taking this class has actually made me think a little differently when I approach a picture opportunity. I think though it much more than just snapping it as I did with the point-n-shoot. My class will end soon. Not looking forward to that. Probably sign up for another one if they offer it.

Hello community.
After many mind altering months I finally pulled the trigger on a new K5 IIs. This will be my first DSLR; upgrading from an old Canon PowerShot point-n-shoot!! :)
After scouring this forum and the posts and support from this community, I decided I'd go off the Canikonian beaten path and get a Pentax. This community is great - from other posts I've been reading, I can see it is very supportive as well. Thanks to all of you who contribute and made my decision easier.
I'm also taking a digital photography class at my local community college. The instructor is great; though a Nikonian for decades.
I've updated my firmware. Checked my shutter count - only 5 which I've put on myself. I'm starting with DA 18-55mm
WR and 50mm lenses. The second because of a recommendation from a friend and a posting "The Perfect Zebra Photo in 3 East Steps" in the Photo Articles of the forum.
I'll upgrade as I get used to the camera and settings. I don't know what type of photographs I'll be most interested in taking yet - maybe macro, maybe landscape, most likely astrophotography. But there are some awesome examples to learn from here.
Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi! :)

Very nice Gian. That's the perspective I was looking for - I don't mind finding/buying some quality lenses(used) to start with, and learning from there. My approach will probably be to start with a nice prime, I've read the article about the 35mm f1.4, learn it, then move on from there.
Thanks

Hello everyone.
These are amazing pictures with the K-5 IIs. My question, as a complete newbie, is whether it would make sense to start out with the IIs vs. II. I'm looking for a camera for the long haul - and it seems the IIs will have me covered for most landscape, portrait, close up photos that I may take.
I've gone through all the reviews and understand the difference in IIs not having the AA filter; I'd start with the kit 18-55mm WR lens; expand from there while controlling LDA. Would this setup be effective for a new comer? Thanks for feedback and the amazing pictures you've posted.

This is one of the best "reviews" of a Pentax that I've seen. I'm very new to photography -- as in, I'm taking my first intro. class this Sunday. I've been scouring this site to get a feel for the Pentax and it's community. Of course, I've read all the usual reviews of Pentax, Canon and Nikon. But I have to admit Lauren's photographs have convinced me. Clearly the camera is in the right hands - but it gives me a clear idea of what I could do with enough time and effort and not worry about the capability of the camera itself.
Thanks,
Mitul
