Thanks Just1MoreDave - Yes, it has an A/M switch. But you think the basic elements/coatings/construction is equivalent to a Super Tak?

I just double-checked - the 55 f/1.8 is actually an Auto Tak - NOT a Super-Tak. Hmmm.

Thanks for replying. I actually like the look of the 55 when it's wide open. It's got a very old-school "film" look to it (LOVE the "haloing"). 30-40 years ago, people worked really hard to get that look. I guess I'm wondering if it's still a desirable thing... (Like I said - I like it...).

Hi All -
I'm pretty new to this group and thought I'd introduce myself with a couple of pics. I'm actually just getting back into still and *movie* photography after a pretty long absence (I was still shooting film when I left... :hmm:). I recently acquired a Canon T3i, and began looking around for some real glass, but as I'm of fairly limited resources right now, needed something that didn't cost an arm and a leg (and I was hesitant to invest in anything called a "plastic fantastic!). That's when I stumbled upon this forum - and the words "Super Takumar." I did a ton of reading up on them, and decided to give them a try. I was able to purchase 3 lenses - a 28mm/3.5 and a 135mm/3.5 Super Taks, and a 55mm/1.8 Auto Tak, and all for less than $100 total (including shipping!). I'm still getting the feel of the camera, but was able to capture a couple photos I feel comfortable enough sharing. I welcome - and would like to hear - any type of constructive feedback. Also - I'd love to hear thoughts on the glass that created these shots - are these images pretty standard for the series, or better or worse? (All 3 shots were done wide open). Thanks & greetings all! Attachment 189443

Okay - so one last (hopefully) question: Is there any advantage to owning a "early" version 1 of either the 28mm or 35mm Super Tak? (e.g. - a lot of people like the early ver 1 *8-element* 50 1.4).

Merci, Monsieur Poitiers! I'm still trying to capture an image or two! But I'll post as soon as I do...

Thanks everybody for your assistance! Always great to be able to chat with people who have 1st hand knowledge.
Just1MoreDave: Yeah - I'm thinking about trying a couple of variations - just for fun. Will post what I find (maybe do a side-by-side?).
Thornburg: Are there specific Yashica models (with any adaptable mount) that you'd recommend?

Hi Interested_Observer -
Thanks for the info. I've read several postings where people have had issues with the Taks (particularly the 50 1.4) hitting the mirror on the Canon 5d's - but not on any of the other models. One user mentioned that he had a 60D and didn't have any problems until he upgraded to the 5d (the T series, 50D, 60D & 7d all have the exact same image sensor). But I haven't had the opportunity to find out yet... ;)
And I've been eyeing Contax Zeiss glass for a while now. But for the most part, they seem to go for 2-3 times the price of the Pentax lenses... I'll research the links you sent over, though! Thanks!

Thanks Steve, KPbICA & thornburg! As a (fairly) experienced cinematographer, it's really important to me to have a *set* of matching primes. Thornburg: other than the brand name, I don't know anything about Yashica lenses & how they work with Canon DSLRs. Were they manufactured by Contax (C-Z?) at one time?

Thanks! But I'm still confused - do you use S-M-Cs or Super-Taks?

Hi All -
Just getting into DSLRs, and I'm really interested in the Super/SMC Takumar line. I've been reading everything I can on them, and have a pretty good understanding of the subtle differences between the early & late version ones vs the version twos, etc. My question is, and I know it's really subjective, but which is better? There are users who swear my the early models, and those who swear by the SMC models. I'm looking to shoot primarily video and need a lens that is really sharp throughout, little to no aberrations, etc. I know the early Taks still hold up great. But what about the Super Multi Coated? Do most Pentax lens users prefer one over the other.
For starters, I'm looking to acquire a few primes: the 28mm 3.5, 35mm 3.5, 50mm 1.4 and possibly a 105mm 2.8.
Thanks in advance for the advice!
Tim
Camera is a Canon T3i.

New to the forum. Cinematographer from Northern CA, just bought my first DSLR (a Canon T3i. I know, I know...). Have heard a lot of great things about the Super Taks & am wanting to learn all I can before investing... Looking forward to engaging on the subject.
Kind Regards,
Tim Walton
