Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?

You MUST ask this one:

When Ricoh bought Pentax brand some years aog, they sad they wanted to become number one. Now, many years after, the products are great, no question about that, but the release of new products is SLOW and FRUSTRATE the consumers. Why don't Ricoh pulls more money to release more products more quickly? The difference with other brands is incredible; just look at roadmap for Nikon Z and Canon R.... New system but full roadmap for years to come and our Pentax K1 can't release 2 lenses a year.... The same for new lenses for the 645 system (it need a tilt shift at least....).

Video Is not pentax priority.
I think we have better probability to see the K-1 AF module on the K-P.
The multiple grip choice Is a false innovation. The fact Is if the new design Is vintage, the handling will be vintage too :-) bad in other words. So Pentax Is forced to release multiple grip to solve this handling problem.
One positive point releasing a vintage styled APSC Is that they really seem listening to their consumer wishes.

For me it seems more reliable than the competitors. YOu have 4 metal supports and it can be tilted in all directions...

I like this new body! I hope it will be a low light killer so I may buy it :)

A personnal point of view from Las Vegas.
I spend 2 weeks in the USA for the first time in august.
I admit I had fears because of how the media relates some facts here in Europe, but I have to say US people are one of the kindest I ever met. Really helpful and respectful for what I saw during my road trip.
:)

By the way, you can see other pictures from my road trip visiting my blog

Pentax K-3 II Officially Announced

Try a Sigma DP.:D You will see the difference immediatly.
Why wouldn't not be usable with long exposure? You put your filter and it will take 4 pics of any Tv setting (I hope...)
For me landscape, long exposure and still live are the main uses. Portrait "coulb" be doable. Why? A friend of mine use an old chamber with glass plate. You have to stay immobile for 30 seconds (using something to block head's movements). Using Pixel shift won't take more than one second in my opinion; so it's doable. I am very confident about this

The pos processing may be an issue but Kenspo will ask Ricoh about the output file format.

It would be great. But what makes me doubt for Pentax is that they shift one pixel to have RGB value for every pixel. Olympus move HALF a pixel so you really increase the number of effective pixel so they need a demosaicing after all... unlike Pentax files. But Sigma files (same tech as Pentax) have never had any solutio (at least from Adabe which is the leader is RAW demosaicing)

Ok thanks.
Because we literally use Lightroom and other program for "demosaicing" a DNG file which means "interpolate" existing informations to create the one missing in the file since we don't have all the R G B vlaue in a normal DNG file. So, with a file containing ever value, there is no point in demosaicing it so program like Lighroom are useless and that explain why Sigma never find a solution for their file but only their own program... So yes I'm very curious to see how Ricoh succeed where Sigma fails... :hmm:

A question for Kenspo about Pixel Shift technologie.
Ricoh says that the final picture will be get by iternal processing or using the program that will come with the K-3 II. But what will it be? DNG? TIFF?
I ask bcause I own a Sigma DP3 and DP2 which product pictures with R G and B value for each pixel like the ones the K-3 II will produce. And Sigma never come with a solution to produce a DNG file for such pictures... They had their X3F file or the JPG option, plus TIFF option in their program. And Adobe never helped them to make Lighroom or Photoshop opening their files..
So you see what I point out: Will we have to change our workflow for Pixel Shift pictures?
Thanks!

Looking at all those comments, it's clear that their (at least) 2 kind of customers:
- those who want classic tech (wifi, touch articulated screen....)
- those who are (sorry don't kill me but it is what I think...) more "pro" oriented or maybe "Pentax DNA" oriented

And I think ricoh is smart because they release the K-S line for the first category people. :-) They have their holy Wifi and selfie features...

Don't forget how Ricoh sell the K-3: a camera for the outdoor: so we have here a logical evolution: GPS added with astrotracer and onboard compass... And you can use their new WR external flash. And I'm sorry but when are try to be "pro", you may face all situations and an onboard flash is of no use. If you work in studio, you have a wireless solution (cactus, flashwave for classic flash or wireless option for Elinchrom or other brands of studio flashes...). And for those saying they use it for fill, alright but not for a payed job I think? And for those using it to trigger other flash, have you ever use umbrella in such position that it totally hide your slave flash? If you want to become serious about using flash, you need an external one.
Same thing for Wifi: You want tethering? Just wait some months or send mails to Ricoh asking for K line to be compatible with Image Transmitter 2 used for 645Z. They said they were thinking about it. Or you want Wifi to transfer your pics? Man when I have 4Giga to transfer, it's better to use USB 3 or plug the SD in the PC. You want Wifi because sony or fuji has it? Buy a sony or a fuji if it is SO important... OR buy a K-S2 (really nice by the way)

I think that with the K-3 II, Ricoh try to target the semi-pro photographers more than enthusiasts. It make sense because it is not a new model, just a "II" like the K-5 II was... So K-3 = enthusiast and K-3 II = semi-pro. And based on the welcome of this model, they will adapt their marketing strategy in the future.

But that's how I see the Ricoh marketing:
- Fans and newcomers who "want it all" "like other brands" but with a Pentax flavor get K-S line
- Fans and newcomers who want something to work with and a strong Pentax identity get K-3 II and its future iterations.
And for me it's smart from Ricoh to act this way.
