It looks like a single light (only one pole), but perhaps there are are a pair of bulbs or a wide light source at the end of the pole. Some other lenses will produce similar star bursts from a single light source, due to their specific combination of glass elements (at narrow apertures, the DA 18-135 is one example), but unless this particular DA 15 is at variance with other DA 15's, I don't think that explains it.

I'm impressed with the lack of light pollution in a 60 second exposure (kind of depressing that there was no twilight at 7PM, but I digress). Well done.

Thanks for your kind words, I've been offline for a few days and just catching up. I use photography to create souvenirs of what I've seen, so there is always a story behind my photos. Sometimes the story is only of interest to myself, but I like posting on this forum because every once in a while someone else finds it interesting too.

I might have missed the legally required footnote that explained the relatively large operating loss for the Other segment; such as a major writedown of a capital investment. The other puzzling part is how half of the revenue for the environmental and healthcare businesses was internal sales. My guess is that the Other segment is being used as a holding area for business operations that haven't been integrated into the major segments during Ricoh's recent evolution into a digital office services company (with some related printer technology product lines). A bit like a game of musical business chairs, where the players left without a chair are put in the Other segment.

Five years ago, consumer cameras were less than 1% of Ricoh's total operations, that percentage is much lower today. I've said it before, the Pentax and GR lines are a vanity project for Ricoh Company, as long as they don't hemorrhage money way out of proportion to their public relations value to the parent company, those brands are safe.

Even if AIC is only implemented in a small minority of published digital images, the assumption will be that any image without the AIC "authentic" imprint is not the image that was originally photographed. There has always been a myth that the camera doesn't lie; in fact, the act of taking a photograph involves misrepresenting reality, but as long as the public believes in this myth, photographs can have a real impact. With AIC, publishing a photograph that looks authentic isn't good enough, the photograph needs to be taken with an AIC compliant device and any modifications to the image outside of that device will be marked as "fake." Adobe's interest in promoting AIC is probably due to their belief that photographs modified using Adobe's AIC compliant software will still have the same aura of authenticity as the original out of camera image, but I don't see that happening. Far more likely that the public will stop believing the objective camera myth.

Once the public believes everything is fake (and I think the public is already past the point of no return in that regards), how do professional photographers compete with professional fakers?

That particular tractor was used by 2 different long distance moving drivers before it was passed on to me. The other drivers didn't think it was reliable enough, it had less than 500,000 kms when I started using it (21 months later it has less than 530,000 kms). The longer wheelbase because of the bunk is of no benefit for what I do (although I can take 4 passengers with me, so it has served as a crew van on a couple of occasions), but this 2015 Cascadia is a huge upgrade over the '98 Mack that was originally assigned to me.

Taken with my phone, because I don't take my camera bag to work. I don't do long distance moves, but part of my job as a trailer monkey is to drop trailers for local moves. $1.5 million house on a golf course in a closed community, shares a U-shaped side road with two other houses, which allowed me to bend the trailer around the Blue Spruce tree without driving on any lawns. The ramps off the back of the trailer are placed on the front landing, so the swampers don't have to walk so far uphill.

Unbelievable. What kind of a maroon backs his trailer out of a parking spot instead of into it. Just your luck he somehow managed to get to the truck stop before you without having an accident on the way.

Typical scene on divided highways out here on the prairies. Lots of LCVs (Long Combined Vehicles), because one driver can pull two 53 foot trailers. In Saskatchewan, triples are allowed under very limited conditions.

It also felt more conducive to walking on the beach in September. This bay is relatively sheltered, other parts of Lake Superiour had 10 foot swells and big breakers the same day in October. This lake is more like a freshwater ocean.

Two photos of Old Woman Bay on Lake Superior. The first was taken September 5, 2016.

The second was taken October 9, 2023. There are still plenty of tourists stopping here during the Labour Day weekend in September, not so many during Canadian Thanksgiving in October.

Kakabeka Falls is the second highest waterfall in Ontario (Niagara Falls is the highest) and in October, the amount of water going over the falls is greatly diminished. The Kaministiquia River ends up in Lake Superiour and water flowing out of Lake Superiour eventually ends up going over Niagara Falls. I think someone else has already posted images of Kakabeka Falls in this thread, but it was far enough back that I thought I would post my shots from a road trip this week.

I haven't travelled much this year, but I had to make a 6000 km round trip to get my son's household goods out of storage. I would pull over at various scenic viewpoints to get out and stretch and had my camera on the front seat beside me.

Any Canadian alive in 1981 should recognize which Canadian hero this is a statute of. Picture taken at the Terry Fox Monument on the east side of Thunder Bay, not too far from where he ended his Marathon of Hope.

This view of Lake Superiour (with a few iron ore freighters at anchor) is from in front of the monument. I don't have a prime in the 28-31 mm range (the first photo above is at 28mm) and even though I do have a DA 70 in my bag, the DA 18-135 allows me to take short telephoto shots without having to change lenses.

I was trying to get pictures of ghosts, a five second exposure while the traffic was waiting for the lights to change and pedestrians were approaching the crosswalk seemed to work the best. The foliage in the immediate foreground was hit by gusts of wind coming off the river (the grass in the lower left and the leafy branches in the upper right); I was also trying to contrast the motion blur with the various man-made objects that were solidly fixed in place.

My complaint with these discussions is that the forest always gets lost in all the different one-dimensional fact trees that different people focus on. Every step of converting photons into digital information is highly manipulated in the design of a digital camera in an attempt to give the photographer the experience they intended to purchase. A quote from people who actually understand the technology behind CMOS image sensors (but possibly not the art of photography), referring to just the sensor itself, not the camera's processor or any metaphysical manipulation by marketing departments and "expert" users:
ISO variance/invariance is just another phrase that obfuscates what is actually going on when we press the shutter button. By all means, experiment with different settings for your camera; after all, you paid good money for it and you are entitled to do whatever you want to it to get the best experience for yourself. Just don't expect your personal formula to make everyone else equally happy.

Are there mp3 packets ?

Most likely the same large bunch of files were copied directly to each mp3 player with some kind of physical connection; it is much faster and easier than downloading from a website to each machine. This particular collection of files might be available for downloading from a peer to peer service, but it probably won't be advertised because the bandwidth used to download several gigabytes of files at a time to a large number of clients is not free and will likely be blocked. In other words, you will probably have to download each piece of music individually in order to build your own public domain library.

I'm not sure what you mean by packets, packet is a technical term for a block of data in digital transmission protocols, which is not related to the type of data being transmitted. MP3 files might be streamed with a protocol that uses packets for transmission, but the MP3 file format doesn't use packets.

Public domain sound recordings don't include as much in the way of modern musical genres because in most places, a sound recording is copyrighted for 50 years after the recording is published, unless the original music was published long before the recording was made, in which case the copyright expires 70 or 100 years after the first publication. That will depend on the website providing the digital files with sound recordings, but MP3 is one of the oldest formats and probably the best supported by hardware, so in most cases a web service offering music for downloading will provide MP3 files.

OMDS working on Astrotracer-like functionality...

I would like to see the IBIS/ILIS system that works for 40 second handheld exposures. This isn't video stabilization that merely needs to keep the person watching from getting disoriented; for astro-photography, the image needs to be stabilized well enough to keep the stars and other astronomically distant light sources well-defined.

In terms of patent protection, you can't patent general procedures or processes; even a specific algorithm is very difficult to enshrine as intellectual property. More likely that Manufacturer B decides it is more effective to licence Manufacturer A's fully developed implementation than developing a new one from scratch. Most patents are filed to prevent Manufacturer C from selling blatant copies of Manufacturer A's work.

Ruckle Provincial Park on Saltspring Island. The EXIF is wrong, the lens was a Rokinon 8mm lens, not 10mm. I can't remember if my camera doesn't have a setting of 8mm for manual focus lenses, or if I just didn't bother to correct my camera.

Canada: Lynx Equity Limited has acquired Henry's camera chain.

Also known as a motivated seller. Problem with long standing businesses in declining markets is how do the owners cash out without accepting a pittance. It isn't necessarily that the business is about to go belly up, so the business can generate cash for several years to come, but the long term prospects aren't attractive enough to entice a buyer who wants to do a makeover and turn the business around. While older businesses are more likely to own than lease the property they operate on, the current market for commercial real estate isn't hot enough to justify the purchase by itself. On the other hand, if the new owners want to pull cash out of the business until it is no longer viable, the value of the real estate (realized either by selling the property or leasing it out to a different business) can provide a nice return on the initial investment.

Regardless, the sale of Henry's to a private equity firm is anything but a signal that brick and mortar camera stores are about to have a resurgence.
