I just don't understand Pentax

I personally don't get Nikon, Canon, Minolta (oh sorry, Sony I guess), etc. In fact, about 20 years ago I stopped even reading anything about them as it seemed they were becoming more about marketing instead of engineering. That is a solid business model in today's consumerism, it works and makes them a lot of money, just not my money.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I've always seen Pentax as an engineering firm first, everything else comes after that. I seriously doubt Pentax even really considers a "system" as mentioned in this thread, they have their past and current lens roadmap, and release camera bodies when they are ready to. It seems like common sense to me. I mean sports photography was fantastic long before modern speedy auto focus, the best sports pictures ever are not recent.

It reminds me a bit of story about Fuji Heavy Industries/Subaru in the early 90s where they found themselves with a substantial leftover budget for the year. Marketing was their least funded department, but as engineering is their priority that surplus budget naturally went there instead. Many companies would never consider such a thing!

After picking the K mount and investing in it's star lineup over the years, I pick up a new body to go with them every 7-10 years. I see the quality glass as the investment, not the technology changes in camera bodies. Granted I'm not your average target market for the industry, but I bet I'm closer to being Pentax's average customer.

Of course, that is just my humble opinion, and I very well could be wrong!

I totally get what the OP is driving at.

Sometimes we have so many options and end up doing nothing because of it.

I was getting that way MANY years ago. So I decided to focus my photography acquisition attention on DA* glass, being the best weather sealed tubes filled with glass I could find. Now looking back I'm glad I did, passing over many of the new bodies and FF which I would have bought but totally didn't need to fulfill my likes (and skill) in photography.

Still I can't believe I had the discipline to wait over a decade for the DA* 11-18 to be released (originally supposed to be DA* 11-16 I was told, cancelled, on again, on hold, changed to 11-18).

Sometimes I wonder if I missed out or would have enjoyed more variety if I'd have bought various lens sets or moved to FF, but I have a feeling resisting all that kept me more focused on shooting what I like with what I had.

Northern lights

I've been fortunate to view our Northern Lights from many locations over the course of the past 4 decades.

However, one of the most memorable was on a flight crossing the north Atlantic. The plane was dark, almost everyone asleep when the pilot whispered over the PA system "If anyone is awake and wants to see Mother Nature's most incredible light show, have a look out North facing windows now."

Every Atlantic crossing trip since then I've always made a point to sit on what would be the North side of a plane if it is traveling at night.

You pretty much got both, exactly right!

On a more serious note, thank you everyone for sharing the pics in this thread, I really enjoyed them.

Welcome Phil!

My family are from Nottinghamshire, and I have spent a great deal of time at the City Ground as it is probably my favorite place on earth. I'm from Derby but will deny it if ever asked.

They aren't kidding above in this thread, they will have you dreaming of Pentax without realizing you are doing it in no time if you stick around these forums. But, it'll be some of the nicest people you'll ever meet that brainwash you :)

Cheers!

Leyton

I have next to no chance of winning the giveaway, but wanted to thank you and all involved for offering it.

If nothing else, when I received your email about the contest it made me get off my butt and pick up my Pentax and snap some pictures.

After that, I even dusted off the old K10D to appreciate the engineering which went into it, mounted a * lens and relived some fond memories of my first Pentax digital camera.

Cheers!

This forum is like reading an English dictionary compared to some other forums I am involved with. I want to blame mobile phones for the general lack of sentence structure, spelling and grammar, but I have a feeling society doesn't put much weight on proper communication anymore.
