Buying a lens in the USA

It might be worth looking into claiming back the tax.

I'm not sure of the monetary requirements or procedures between the USA and Sweden, but a few years back I was in the UK and bought a few expensive items and I was able to claim back a large portion of the VAT paid as I was returning to Canada.

There were forms to fill out, and the cheque was mailed to me a few weeks after I returned.

Oh yeah, my experience with Amazon pickup lockers in other countries have been great so far. On checkout just pick a locker location that is convenient, the item ships and when it is delivered to the locker you get an email with a pass code to enter (or a bar code for the locker to scan if you use a phone). When you get to the locker, enter your code or scan your phone, and the locker door pops open revealing your package.

2 things I've run into with Amazon lockers though. 1) they won't ship some bigger ticket items to lockers as they might require signatures on delivery 2) you only have a few days to pick up the item, they email you a warning if it's not picked up about when it will be returned.

Enjoy your trip!

Limited lens vs. Star (*) lens question

My personal opinion is I like both very much, but I only buy the star series due to the weather seals.

Pentax's opinion is: "To be designated as a Star-series product, a lens must demonstrate extremely high resolving power and contrast — from the center of the image field to the edges, even at open aperture — and exceptional optical performance with minimal distortion and color bleeding. In addition, it must be a very bright lens with one of the largest open apertures in its class. It must provide extreme strength, superior dustproof and weather-resistant performance, and outstanding operability. Only when all these requirements are satisfied, it is named a Star-series lens because it incorporates the very best of our state-of-the-art technologies that optimize the photographer's creative freedom. "

It answers the OP's question I suppose.

Now those are things of beauty! There was a A* 200mm for sale in the marketplace recently, I don't need it but really wanted it because of how beautiful the lens is.

I just don't understand Pentax

I personally don't get Nikon, Canon, Minolta (oh sorry, Sony I guess), etc. In fact, about 20 years ago I stopped even reading anything about them as it seemed they were becoming more about marketing instead of engineering. That is a solid business model in today's consumerism, it works and makes them a lot of money, just not my money.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I've always seen Pentax as an engineering firm first, everything else comes after that. I seriously doubt Pentax even really considers a "system" as mentioned in this thread, they have their past and current lens roadmap, and release camera bodies when they are ready to. It seems like common sense to me. I mean sports photography was fantastic long before modern speedy auto focus, the best sports pictures ever are not recent.

It reminds me a bit of story about Fuji Heavy Industries/Subaru in the early 90s where they found themselves with a substantial leftover budget for the year. Marketing was their least funded department, but as engineering is their priority that surplus budget naturally went there instead. Many companies would never consider such a thing!

After picking the K mount and investing in it's star lineup over the years, I pick up a new body to go with them every 7-10 years. I see the quality glass as the investment, not the technology changes in camera bodies. Granted I'm not your average target market for the industry, but I bet I'm closer to being Pentax's average customer.

Of course, that is just my humble opinion, and I very well could be wrong!

Does this tripod seem sufficient to stablize a K1?

Way back long ago, when finding anything made in China was difficult, we used a decent sized bean/sand bag in those situations. It had a double purpose of hanging from a full size tripod to stabilize that as well.

I can't believe the FA* hasn't sold yet, if I didn't already have that focal length covered I'd be all over it as it is one of the finest Pentax lens I've ever used.

I really should keep my FA* 300mm mounted on a body.

Every time I see a flamingo, parrot, motmot or other interesting bird fly past I have to go dig the 300mm out of the camera bag, mount it, then go running back to find my subject has disappeared. I'm so unorganized!

All the pics posted on here make me feel shame.....
