Another +1 for the DA18-135mm WR lens. I bought it bundled with K30 and its very good value and versatile.

@ Keitha : Thanks for the info. To be honest, I did not get much chance to play with my Metz 58 even though its been 6 months since I bought it. But as you said I will use it only if I require it at all cost.
@The Squirrel Mafia: i agree with your point but I had mixed results with bumping up the ISO. I thought wide angle lens are good for landscape, interiors and architecture but not sure if they are good for portraiture. But they will be good for taking picture of large group I think. My 50mm f1.8 lens is soft when taken wide at f1.8 but I love the bokeh though. I was looking for some sharp lens with very good bokeh mainly for portraiture and occasions. ---------- Post added 05-07-15 at 09:34 PM ---------- Do you think Pentax SMCP-FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited Lens will add any benefit over my existing kit?

Thanks everyone for the support. That is the main reason I went with Pentax even though none of my friends opposed it :)
@Stavri, the 200mm lens will be bit challenging in tight places I think but not too sure. The problem I have is, its hard for me to make people move to get the clear view on the picture since its going to be my relatives and they will take me for granted... lol. I always wanted to buy a professional grade lens and may be a 200mm lens will be a good option bbut not sure if it will be used much for this occasion.
@Keitha McCall, that is an amazing picture. Btw when you meant slap, I believe you were just asking me to blindly use that for the occassion.
@sterretje, I got Stofen Omnibounce diffuser and I believe that should work . I also got built in diffuser flap in the Metz 58 but am not sure how good they are.

Hello Pentaxians,
I love my pentax K30 camera and the following is my kit.
1) Pentax K30 camera with 18-135mm WR lens.
2) Pentax 50mm f1.8 lens
3) Metz 58 AF-2 Flash
4) Manfrotto tripod 293 with RC2 ball head.
I was requested by my family member to shoot for their occasion which involves their small kid. It would be inside a temple and hence there should be ample of light unless if its cloudy. Am bit nervous since its an important event for everyone and I don't want to screw up anything. Hence wanted to check if my existing kit is suffice or if I need to go for an additional glass with premium quality if required.
Regards,
Jai

Installed Zoner studio 17 and that seems to be a feasible alternate solution on cost basis.

Thanks Kyc. I used the trial version of Photo Director Ultra and the interface looks quite similar to Lightroom. But as you stated, it gets some time to get the most out of it.

Hi friends,
Am planning to buy a photo editing software for my ultra book (Toshiba Kira) and am not sure whether to go for Photo Director 6 Ultra due to its competitive pricing ($50) at the moment since I have not used it much. I have used Lightroom and Captureone Pro and I find both good but Capture one pro is the most expensive in the bunch. Hence am not sure if I need to choose between Lightroom 5 or Photo Director 6 and hence need your advise. Please help.

Jai

Thanks DSims. I don't like to spend too much of time on PP either but again, when I compared jpeg from camera to the PP from RAW, I had to go with RAW all the way.

That is indeed a great PP although my complexion is bit darker than this :) . Thanks dcBear7. Also the reason I used center point spot focus was to check if it provides any advantage over focus when compared to the ones on the edge. I believe out of 11 focus points, 9 are cross type and I read some article stating the center one provides bit superiority over the others in terms of focus. Hence was testing that.

Thanks for the tips guyz.
@elpolodiablo, I believe PP means portrait photography?
Also am planning for a cruise trip this weekend and am not sure if prime (DA 50 f1.8) or my 18-135mm WR lens will prove to be more suitable for the location. I have read on the manual that 18-135mm WR lens is sharpest at 35mm f1.8. Have not tested it out yet :)
The below are the books that I use for reference.
1) Understanding exposure - 3rd edition - Bryan Peterson
2) Tony Northrup's DSLR Book: How to Create Stunning Digital Photography
3) On-Camera Flash Techniques for Digital Wedding and Portrait Photography
I also watch lot of you tube videos and practise different exposures on my camera when ever I could.

Thanks everyone for your support. I must admit, the lightroom did make the picture better. I usually use spot metering and focus on the subject eyes and then would fill the frame with the subject face and adjust the exposure settings until the light meter within camera states its right. Then recompose and then take the picture. Please find my other pictures posted in the below link https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/151-pentax-k-30-k-50/192015-post-your-k-3...here-122.html#
Am quite happy with the landscape pictures. Only concern is the portrait or with people. But again, I have seen great results with different lens in that thread and that is the reason I wanted to know if I need a lens upgrade for better results.
Also is photoshop or lightroom better for post processing? There is also DXO optics but I have not used it and hence not sure about it.

I got Vello freewave for my K30 from B&H and it covers 100m range.. You have option to shoot single shot/continuous or bulb mode using the wireless remote. It has dual function, press half button to focus and full to trigger shutter.

Thanks for the response. I kept TTL with HSS by default if am using the flash along with omni bounce diffuser if its indoors. I believe I read in some article to keep it that way. Unfortunately I don't have any of my pictures taken indoor using flash and my friends did not wanted their picture to be posted. Anyways, this one was taken using DA50 f1.8 lens , with exposure settings as f5.6, 1/125 ISO 400. Also I have sent my K30 with 18-135mm kit to Pentax service center to check for any AF accuracy issue and they returned it stating everything looks fine. ---------- Post added 06-19-14 at 04:20 AM ---------- Also I use Hoya UV filters by default on both my lenses and I never used to remove them. Not sure if the exposure will be affected because of that.

Thanks everyone. I do agree that the output depends on 90% skill and 10 % equipment and am constantly learning to improve my skills. I also have Metz 58 AF-2 external flash for low light photography. But I always use it in TTL with HSync mode at this point since am still in learning curve when it comes to flash. But I always go with manual rather than aperture priority or shutter priority mode on my camera. Did try manual focus using these lens but did not get any good results and hence sticking with autofocus for now.
Good to know that my equipment is capable and I don't have to upgrade any lens to get better results.

Hi all,
This might be a noob question but I just need to understand the limitations of my kit. I have Pentax K30 with 18-135mm WR lens and DA 50mm F1.8. When taking portrait or group pictures (indoors or outdoors), the picture is good but still missing the wow factor. I usually shoot in Raw and then do bit of post processing in light room. I have seen lot of pictures (indoors, wedding) of people and the picture really pops out. But am not getting that sharpness or that wow factor on the pictures that I take. I tried multiple exposure settings under different conditions, with tripod and remote shutter etc... but still could not achieve that kind of picture. So is that the maximum quality that I can expect with my kit and if so, is there any great lens that would yield amazing results on people or portrait, which one that would be to add to my existing kit?
Regards,
Jai

Hi people,
Am bit confused with the autofocus system in K30 in regards to phase detection and contrast detection. As per various articles, live view uses contrast detection and the normal mode is phase detection if we are using the view finder. For night mode or low light situations, contrast detection is better as per the reviews but I really hate to use the live view. So how is the autofocus system is used based on whether you use view finder or live view?
Also I use focus select mode to choose my focus point so that i can focus on the eye of the subject during portrait. Does the cross type points will have mode advantage than the other two points for focus or they are all the same? Apologies for the noob question since am still trying to understand the autofocus capability of K30.
Regards,
Jai

Thanks guyz. I believe the best bet is to have M setting on camera and use PTTL with flash. Use flash power control from camera to control the flash intensity. BTW whats the maximum shutter speed that can be used using HSS?

Thanks Jim. When you meant "adjust down in camera". you meant the exposure compensation in camera since there is also exposure compensation in flash itself?

Thanks Jim. So in P-TTL mode, the flash automatically detects the correct exposure settings from the camera automatically or is there anything that we need to change manually?

Got the Metz 58 AF-2 along with Sto-Fen Omni bounce. To be honest, never thought flash unit will be this heavy. Its hard for me to hold the camera for a long time even though am using DA 50 F1.8 which is very light. Am still trying to learn different modes and am not sure which one will be better with K30. TTL , PTTL or automatic.
