Have you got the AA battery holder, which somehow manages to "override" the solenoid issue. You could try the exposures again.

Buy the largest screw in filter that you need and use step up rings for your other lenses

Non start after inserting batteries

Insert the batteries but don't turn the camera on for an hour. Sounds a daft idea but it is believed that the slow trickle of power helps the camera and functions to wake up.

Meter reads underexposed in decent light

Sorry for confusing everyone.
I have been following the thread and wondered why a simple experiment hadn't been suggested (as far as I could see)
The only other thought would be to use either a dslr as a light meter or use a phone app.in a similar way.
By way of my experience using a narrow dof is OK but there still needs to be further processing on the computer to achieve the desired effect

Try experimenting with a digital camera using the same settings as you would like to use (aperture/iso/shutter speed). You may find your answer there.

The original image in the first post looks like two images stitched together, one focusing on the man and the second out of focus on the background.
Some bridge/compact cameras allow panorama shooting where this effect could be achieved

two images stitched together? Manually focusing on the right hand side to give the blurred effect on that side, using the setting on the left hand side? Just how I see it

Proper memory card

Make sure that the firmware is up to date.
My first guess is that the cards have too much memory for the camera. When the ist series was on the scene so to speak max card size was I believe 4 gb. Anything larger than that won't work.

Isn't the recommendation an extra stop for films(colour) 10 years out of date- assuming optimal non-freezing storage. I shot a colour roll at 100 instead of 200 that was 9 years out of date.
I would have thought the same applies to this film although being chromogenic b/w might make things a bit different. I suppose 200 would be ok.
Is your lab busy and not using old chemicals?
Like you I liked this film, I thought it just shaded (pardon the pun) XP2 and was better than the Fuji offering.
