Exactly. Same for videos. All this apps this videos are posted to show you a stream of posts to be watched on a phone held vertically. A picture in horizontal format will be just tiny, a horizontal video would force one to turn the phone intermittently, just inconvenient.
(not that I support that, just trying to grab the rationale behind it)

I would see it as your task as a photographer to bring the interesting bits in your pictures. But in times of smartphone heavy processing and ooc-filters I might be old fashioned.

Exactly this might have changed with the sensor generation in the Nikon Z9. A K-1III as a DSLR might not get rid of a mechanical shutter, but I could see interesting options with an open shutter and constant sensor readout. However, don't know how the super fast readout speed would influence or advance flash photography (I aguess HSS should be easier?). But beware, I'm not saying this is what Ricoh will have to deal with in a hypothetic new K-1with a new hypothetical flash unit.
For now I went the way most others seem to go, just bought a godox V1, still have to test it with KP and a K3-II.

I don't think that assumptions on the intentions and logic of Pentax (from almost all of us) have a good track record. However, I just wanted to point out that you are calling for one thing - FF variable aperture telezoom - but I assume use this as a synonym for cheap and good FF telezoom ("in the price range of 28-105" a.t.m. 699€). Seeing the 70-210 at 1200€ and the variable aperture 150-450 at 2200€ I see good chances such a lens might be well beyond 1k in the end. But we can discuss this if and when it might be announced, I've made my point.

You see, you put many ifs there. I see some "potential" for the price beeing out of your expectation range. Especially if, and now I repeat possibilities brought up here, they did include in lens stabilization. It's not that price complaints have never happened here, right?

I read Eric's very balanced and logical post and can't see where you think this was said?
However, I have the feeling, if it arrives, your expectations of entry level might have set you up for some disappointment. I would be glad to be wrong here, however, seeing the DFA 28-105 seems to be your only lens of the modern offers Pentax has for the K-1II, makes me think I'm right.

It might be a Ricoh S-3. Characteristic is the film winder at the bottom.

Beside Hasselblad ending the H-System also Zeiss seems to exit photography market completely. link https://www.thephoblographer.com/2023/06/05/reports-confirm-that-zeiss-has-e...hoto-industry/
I think it's tough times for traditional photo companies and we should all be grateful Ricoh is so much dedicated to this product line that it still supports the APS-C line and most probably works on the FF-DSLRs. Many of the recent high end-products for shure have not paid off yet, and lenses like DFA 21 limited very much require and determine a new FF-body. But I honestly can't see this for MF.

Haha, that's the spirit.
I have to admit the discontinuation for a new D645 was not the first thing I would have thought of. However, the end of the MF line would be a sad fact, but somehow understandable. After the hyperbole of the 2010s years the system camera market seems to have changed to be an exclusive high (price and capabilities) level market with lower volume and probably also slower turnaround time. Basically the FF-system cameras reached prices of former MF-systems, also their high-end lenses. As much as bigger sensors than 35mm might still have advantages, in most cases FF will probably offer solutions for most demands, with APS-C being the enthusiast playground. If Pentax not only incorporates the electronics of it's latest generation in a K1-III but has a sensor of latest generation with 45+Mp it can cover high resolution demands too. They could go the extra mile with upscaling the viewfinder from the K3-III. Too lazy to do the math, but it would probably offer a view not far off the crop 645 system. I don't know how easy it would be to offer a fully equipped lens adapter, but this could ease the path for some 645 users to join the team K-1x.

Interesting! makes me wonder what the difference in spectral transmission would be, especially in UV and IR.

Nice! Ihe timing might be also targeted towards the expected announcement of the Leica M11 monochrome. In comparison to that the price will very attractive, just extrapolating from the
8200,- € price of the M10...
However, I think it is good to see these developments in close connection with costumer surveys. Makes them appear caring for user base wishes, without investing too much development funds.

All valid points. But I don't see how the one, a monochrome DSLR, is diminished by the other, a "weird" lens, the topic of this thread. You don't trust the Ricoh factory spectral calibration of the filters provided? Don't buy this lens but use any other K-mount lens available. Beside the point, that this is a thought experiment and not more. Howevee, I would say that it would qualify for "weirdness" in a very strong way.
The K 15mm pointed out by JPT does not have a filter thread and thus uses this option to allow some easy filter use. I assume it has a filterless position too, so you can use any filter system that one manages to attach without a filter thread. And if this solution doesn't match your use cases, why bother?
But this is getting way too detailed for something solely based on the word "weird".

I think we are talking about similar but different things. A monochrome camera with removable low pass filter and a LENS with suggested built in selectable filters, like the K 15mm presented, but with a Red, a Blue and a Green filter to select from. This would use all the pixels with each of this colors filtered, a full pixel combined RGB image would be possible, composed from three images each with one of the filters dialed in. This would be the highest resolution possible as all pixels get engaged for each colour.
But the thing with thinking outside of the box is that there is so much outside the box that it is very unlikely that's Ricoh's outside of the box covers the same outside as mine. As JPT said, very unlikely, but I cheer the direction this is heading. ---------- Post added 04-08-23 at 08:07 PM ----------
Sure, valid points and this would add a lot to the monochrome capabilities of the camera.
But if the concept of the dial in filters would be a feasible one such a monochrome camera could gain an additional capability for those moments where an RGB image would be useful even for buyers of those special cameras.
And, from my personal/professional POV, having a three band full resolution image gives me/everyone in advanced image analysis way more possibilities in image manipulation and analysis than any pixel shift image with a Bayer-filter sensor could ever provide. However, not an everyday demand.

Oh, wow. Make it an R-G-B-Ir-clear lens and you have a one shot monochrome or IR, or three shot colour image! ;-)

Please excuse my curiosity, but why does that upset you? Everyone that really wants or needs it can still grab it. If you think in future someone would be in the position of comparing camera systems and then realising that in the normal focal length area a Pentax FF-DSLR system with a camera body cost of a new K1-III at 3000€ is not offering a mediocre mid priced 50mm lens which might upset him so much that he might revise his intial interest, doesn't seem to be a likely scenario to me.

My Contax had the meter activated by engaging the film winder for some degrees. Liked that, but especially because it made me check if the film has been advanced more regularly to not stand there trying to snap the perfect photo and nothing happens, because the film has not been wound.

Oh, wow. Phil's first tests, comments, samples etc. were a useful contribution to the photo community from the beginning of digital photography
I think I missed the old side and it's spirit since it got bought by Amazon already.
Still, it was a good resource for information and a regular source for news.
Who would have thought that Pentax in this form as a DSLR-manufacturer would outlive both the mirrorless pioneer Olympus and the dinosaur dpreview...

Sounds like an interesting path to go. One might hope that K-3III high speed would still get an high resolution brother. Don't hit me if I say this would be perfect for a KP-II

Very reasonable advice, can't be said often enough here.
By the way, I just looked at tests for the Fuji 60-250 f4, and it seems to be a beast.

I'm just adding a note, that I don't get this hype about pompous wedding ceremonies and associated photography "standards". 40-50% of these marriages will be divorced anyway. 😌
Edit: I do get it, that this is an interesting and important genre for professional photogs though, no doubt
