Is the Ricoh GR the "Perfect" Street Photography Camera & Travel Companion?

A bunch of interesting new cameras came out this week. I think the Panasonic GM1 may give the Q7 a run for its money, but the Q7 sets the bar very very high in terms of usability and handling. It really handles incredibly well. I consider handling to be at least as important, perhaps MORE, than sensor size. But definitely worth a look at this new M4/3. I'm not sure anything is going to trump the Ricoh GR, however. I've just started using it and am already blown away. The GR seems to have ergonomics, great UI and that huge APSC sensor. And it fits in a pocket. I'll be using it extensively next week!

That leather pouch is SWEET! Is that made specifically for the Sony RX100? Where'd you get it? Would love one!

Thanks! Are you using any of the accessories? OVF? Wide attachment? Tempting, but they make the camera bigger. The OVF is calling me tho!

Congrats! Bummer about the weather. Why doesn't this camera have that legendary Pentax weather sealing? It seems like the only omission. My review unit arrives tomorrow, I hope. Can't wait to hit the streets with it. Other than the weather sealing omission, this seems like the perfect camera.

Hi Everyone:

I sadly :( said goodbye to my delightful Pentax Q7 recently ( https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/237567-q7-my-first-pentax-experience.html ). It was a review unit, but we definitely bonded!

Fortunately, I will be spending some quality time with a camera that I'm thinking may just be the camera of my dreams: the RICOH GR.

I've been a bit obsessed with tiny cameras lately, probably due in no small part to a recently found love of street photography. And certainly, the GR has the pedigree in that department. But it also seems like the perfect pocketable -- something that will allow me to get better, quicker family candids than my iPhone, offering more control and better IQ.

I'm hoping to post a video review and deep dive and will update this thread as I go.

Is there anything you'd like to know or see about the camera? If so, just hit reply here! I'll try to cover as much ground as possible.

Yes indeed. The Q7 was the perfect companion -- light, silent, great IQ. I miss it already!

Thank you Arnold! Sorry about the fast talking! I'm a native New Yawker, but don't hold that against me! ;)

I obtained a PENTAX Q7 review unit a few weeks ago and have been using it quite a bit.

This is my first time using a Pentax camera, and I have to say, I now understand the passion that loyalists feel for this brand, even if the decidedly lower end Q is more hobbyist than hardcore. No, it may not have the legendary build quality that I've heard so much about, but it does have a fantastic user experience, none the less.

It amazes me that a camera so small still manages to have such a classic photography interface. I love direct access dials and buttons on my cameras, and hate diving into menus, so the Q really appealed to me. I also was looking for something that would be as light and small as possible, but still retained lots of easy, manual control, and Raw shooting. While I would have preferred a bigger sensor, the 1/1.7 produced some very nice images.

The Q inspired me to produce my very first ever video review, and I've posted it on YouTube. Its a little unpolished, but I hope it conveys my enthusiasm for this little camera. I was partly inspired by Blunty, on YouTube, whose effusive praise of the original Q really piqued my interest in the device.

I hope to get my hands on a GR some time soon -- that looks like the ultimate street shooter.

Please check out my review -- i'd welcome some constructive feedback:

Doug
