I don't take this is as bad news at all. I could just as easily take it as the long awaited Pentax marketing plot... JUST IN TIME for Christmas....

Make a awesome camera... put it out there at a great price.... people will figure out that on an APC level it blows out most of the competition including Canikon....

It could be a loss leader to get people into it to try it... and we all know how that goes... try it once and it's like crack... you'll be hooked.

That's my take on it.

Why FF over MF?

It's over-hyped in the same way that owning a nice car is over-hyped. You don't really need to own a car that gets 50 mpg, can do 200 miles/hour, and how often do you really need to move a flatbed of cement around? People have lived without anti-lock braking or electronic traction control for a century. A no-frills beater car gets you around just fine.

Of course, there's no reason that an APS-C DSLR is the stopping point on this train of thought. Most people would be fine with a smaller cheaper M4/3 body, or an RX100. In fact most people could probably get away with a $150 P+S for most of their work (cat pictures). Are you willing to take the Fun Police argument to its natural conclusion?

K-3 - 24-36 month product cycle. 645Z 48-60 month product cycle. Mid-range 18-30 month product cycle. Q-x - 12-18 month product cycle. X-Sx product cycle at the shorter end - I believe each model is a one-off with a single planned production run.

Lenses - 10-year product life with several production runs, possibly with a slight update each new run. Expect lens prices to be discouragingly high. If you think MAP pricing caused a storm, wait until the HD D-FA Pro 1:2.8 70~210mm DC (IF) is released.

Executive and marketing people are just people who studied a process in a vacuum for a few years. All of their decisions are risk-based rather than return-optimized. They are risk-averse by education. Their job is to efficiently and optimally allocate scarce capital in a complex world. We are product-centric. They are product agnostic.

You and I are not real. We are outliers. Outliers are risky. They statistically smooth outliers away so that they can make one decision, apply their entire corporate system of capital and people to that decision, and make profit (with a high degree of certainty that profit will ensue).

People with risk appetite are small businesses who want to get large quickly. If they lose they don't lose much. If they win, they win big. Once they get big they can't afford to lose - no one wants to lose big - so they morph into risk-averse businesses and hire MBA's from Harvard and Paris to manage risk.

Pentax may be small but Ricoh is big.

I am not sure if you already watched this but i think this forum (especially) need this kind of stuff:

You Tube

i mean, i am not saying that i wouldn't like a FF (i might like one with the d4x specs for wildlife shooting) but i think aps-c has everything i need to make amazing pictures (not to mention the little extra reach), and with pentax always leading the aps-c cameras i really dont find any real reasons to change, at least for my type of shooting.

the only thing i would ask pentax is to improve its AF system (of both cameras and lenses).

let me know what you though about the video, ( i found the stick a little annoying, the rest was entertaining).

good night

So except for releasing the best enthusiast camera of the year less than a year ago, Ricoh is ignoring enthusiasts. Where does the 645z fit in that theory?

And just because something is stylish doesn't mean it's not also a capable tool.

Finally, a hipster is likely to buy a K1000, not a KS-1. A hipster is anti-flashy, in an ironic sort of way. I guess "hipster" is becoming like "hippie," i.e., someone not like me.

He wasn't saying he's trying to decide between one or the other. He says he wants an apple, not an orange, and Pentax is only selling oranges.

That's a fair statement... but Pentax hasn't sold apples for decades, so I'm surprised he's surprised.

How to push the Pentax Full-Frame Idea and get that FF out faster...

I have been told by our friends over at Pentaxeros (the Spanish Pentax community) that "it is believed" that a full-frame is on its way, although it's a personal hunch and not at all an official statement, let alone something based on what's currently in the pipeline. It seems that Ricoh isn't opening up to anyone about what they're working on, so I guess time will tell what they come up with.

In the mean time, we will continue to try to push the Pentax Full-Frame idea and if we reach 3000 "Likes" in support of a Pentax Full-frame by CS+ (which is in 3 weeks), an official letter from Pentax Spain will go out to the higher-ups in order to make them aware of this strong backing.

Just a few numbers:
Currently, the (unofficial) Pentax Full-frame page has 2,200+ followers, while...
the PentaxForums page has almost 7,000...
and the official Pentax page has 43,000.

So, combined, out two unofficial pages have almost a quarter of the followers of the official page, which really says something, doesn't it?

Add on top of that this:
PentaxForums.com's global traffic rank is 19,978, while
PentaxImaging.com's global traffic tank is 136,591.

So, if we speak up, we will be heard. Let's make it happen!

Update: the letter to Pentax Japan has been written. Sit tight to hear what they respond with! Keep on supporting the full-frame page, as Pentax executives will soon be visiting it!

I've been in the same position. I bought a Lumix mirrorless as well as a Canon s110 especially for kids and family occasions. You just don't have time to look through a view finder because the kids will have moved or they're about to run onto a road or off a cliff. However I can really tell the difference between my K5 + prime photos and anything else. If I'm just documenting events for posterity the small cameras are fine. If I want to spend time creating strong images for my own enjoyment out comes the K5. One thing about children is they grow older and surprisingly quickly. One day they're in nappies and totally dependent on you, and then you blink and suddenly they're at school and telling you how stupid you are. That's when you take off with your K5.

Considering switching over to nikon

Even though you are probably trolling...

I do not understand what this means. Are you are complaining about having physical controls instead of digging through menus to change settings? OK.

I know what you mean. My K5 has a button that says ISO and WB. I wish it was clear what they are for.

The D3s didn't come out until late 2009. It is a 12 megapixel camera. At the time of release, it cost $5000. It is a nice camera, but comparing Nikon's top of the line pro camera with a mid-level Pentax enthusiast camera makes no sense.

Please be sure to post pictures from your new camera so we can see what an improvement it made.

+ a dozen for the op/tech system. Modular, inexpensive and super durable.

I love being able to unsnap the strap when I put the camera on the tripod, not worries about snagging the strap and pulling everything over.

The obvious conclusion: for those who, for whatever reasons, prefer APS-C, but wonder how much IQ they'd be sacrificing viz-a-viz FF, the answer is: not much.
