Part of the issue is that film doesn't need anything at all behind it, except a light tight covering.
Saying that, if you could magically put the sensor, the important expensive part of the camera, in the same place as a film camera, with just the casing between it and the outside world, would you want to?

Additionally, the more/larger electronics you shove in there, the more heat and stress you're putting on it all so you do want a bit of room for that to dissipate rather than cram everything right up next to each other.
I'm sure they squeeze it all together as much as they can within certain tolerances.

For those things you should probably be using a handy smartphone rather than a comparatively huge, bulky, full frame, professional DSLR.

Never used the onboard flash for my K5, if leaving it off gives them more time/space for other things, good!
