I looked at it but unfortunately I already have 3 Topaz products and my Topaz account only recognises that I have 1 product ( Adjust ). I also have Detail and Restyle although I did get those through the Corel site when I bought Paintshop Pro X8.
It doesn`t make sense to buy them again when I would only like to add another 2 or 3 plugins.

How many current lenses are there to test?

Surely just give the job to a couple of apprentices. I mean the camera already exists doesn`t it?
Should only take a week.

Mount the lens, take some pics, does it vignette Yes/No, upload the pics to the website for potential customers to evaluate for themselves.

No biggie.

I`ve just done some quick research

Take the price of the lens + shipping, = A
Calculate VAT at 20% = B
Calculate Duty @ 6.7% of A ( I think ) = C
Total landed cost should be A + B + C

So approximately $720 + $25 ( cheapest shipping ) = $745 * 1.2 = $894 = A + B
$745 * 6.7% = $50 = C

Landed cost should be" approx." $894 + $50 = $944 = £655 again approximately..

Wow thanks for all the quick replies, very much appreciated.

The card came with the camera when I bought it from Adorama. It`s a Samsung 64Gb SDXC. OS is Windows 7

UncleVanya....Yes you are correct. I format in camera and then the PC can`t read it. I format in the PC and the camera wont accept it until it is formatted again. So I upload using the cable.

I think I will hunt around for another card to try and see how that goes.

Steve .....Thanks I will download that Card Formatter and give it try.

Photolady....Yes I think that is what I will stick to from now on if nothing else works.

amoringello.......Thanks for that post, lot`s of useful info to think about

Card formatting

I wonder if anyone can help me.

When I take the memory card out of my camera ( K5iis ) to upload my photos the computer always seems to show a dialogue box stating "this card needs formatting".
If I connect the camera direct I can upload photos without a problem, apart from when I try to do it at work when the camera is never recognised, which is an issue but not the immediate problem.
I have emptied the card while in the camera, then inserted the card into a card reader and formatted it from the computer but then when inserted back in the camera it then demands that I format it immediately.

So the question is it possible to format the memory card in such a way that it is acceptable to both PC and Camera?

Thanks in advance

When I bought my K5 iis I had checked the UK Gov website and it led me to believe that there were no duties ( other than VAT ) to pay on all photographic equipment. I imported 2 lenses ( DA 50 and DA35 ) on the same order and the total seemed to agree with that.
I do remember that the VAT is payable on the whole price including shipping.
There may have been a small handling charge of about £9

I had a Canon AE1 that I bought around 1979 ( I`d be 19 years old ). I`d been at work a couple of years and one of my work mates had one, it seemed good so I bought the same one.
I still remember the shop I bought it from. It cost me £120 with a 50mm f1.8 lens, which was a fortune to me as I was only earning about £30 a week.

I loved that camera and took it all over the place with me.
My stock response when my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas was " just get me something for my camera "
Over the years I ended up with a tripod, a motor wind ( 1.5 fps I think  ), Canon 70-210 f4, Tamron 135mm Vivitar flash etc.
Then when I was about 30 it broke and I just for some reason went and bought a camera without even doing much research.
That was a Canon 1000FN. Bad decision. I never got on with that machine. So it only saw the light of day to be taken away on holidays or out to weddings etc. It`s still in a cupboard somewhere in my house and I may get it out one day as I`ve been given some black and white film to shoot.

Anyway, I kind of lost the pleasure of photography until about 5 years ago ( aged about 50 ) I was looking around and on a whim! decided to buy a Nikon D40. I enjoyed using it but soon realised I wanted something better so I went for the D90.
Again fine with that, until I happened in a Jessops and picked up a Pentax K5. Something told me I was with the wrong brand with Nikon.

Anyway, I found this forum, researched about all this legacy glass and I`ve finally made the jump to the K5 iis and I couldn`t be happier.

Info for Importing from U.S. to U.K.

Yeah, I can understand some peoples reservations about this whole subject. There is a different photography forum ( UK based I think ) where tempers run quite high when the subject of "Grey Imports" is raised.
I, in fact, am not overjoyed by the situation.
I have for the last year been in an informal dispute with Pentax about their global pricing. I`ve written to them several times, both electronically and by snail mail for justification of their policy where their own RRP, as stated on their website, is 30% to 40% higher in the UK than the US. while at the same time the official Pentax site can discount by a further 10% to 20% while the UK site will hardly budge.
Unsurprisingly I did not receive anything resembling an adequate answer. It was waffle about exchange rate nonsense and duties, all wrapped up in an attitude of take it or leave it.

I even contacted UK based retailers to see if they could use their influence and ask, on my behalf, why potential UK customers were being penalised, and their stock reply was "well there`s nothing we can do about it, it`s just the way it is".

The end result was that I was left with no choice, if I wanted the camera.
The fact is that UK retailers did not lose a sale as there was never going to be a sale at those prices. It was a case of source the camera gear this way or do without.
Now I`m not expecting to see the prices in the US and UK equalise as they are different markets but it does seem that " Globalisation" only works for some people ( corporations ) and not others. I could have put up with a difference in price of maybe 10% but I`m not going to be paying essentially double for identical items just because I`m in the UK. I`m not that desperate, or stupid.
It`s not me that`s putting camera shops out of business as there would have been no sale anyway. These are Pentax`s rules and I`m just working within them.

Finally, the post was not meant to be a " look what a good deal I got " type of thing. It was intended to be helpful to other potential UK customers who were thinking of doing the same thing but were unsure of the potential costs regarding duties and VAT etc.
I just thought some info from someone who had experience of the whole deal, as it can seem a bit of a minefield, might be helpful.

Don`t shoot the messenger.

Info for Importing from U.S. to U.K.

Hi guys,
I don`t know if it`s possible to make this a sticky at least for a little while to give a few people a chance to read it, as it took some time and a little research to get it together.

Anyway, as we all know the price of Pentax gear ( and almost everything else ) is usually significantly less expensive in the U.S. compared to the U.K.
I was looking for a Pentax K5 iis and the price in the UK is generally around the £699 mark ( body only ) and if you`re lucky you may get the chance to add the 50mm 1.8 to the deal for £50 if bought with the body.
I decided to look into the pro`s and con`s of potentially importing the gear from the U.S. myself to take advantage of the prices currently on offer and what I`ve learned may prove useful to potential U.K. buyers with the " Black Friday" period approaching.

Firstly import duty.
I searched through the HMRC website ( and a few others ) and the best info I could get left me confident that there should be no import duty on a digital camera ( and by extension lenses etc ) when imported from the U.S.

Secondly VAT.
Again after searching it appeared that this should be the only tax applied but bear in mind that it will be calculated on the total cost including any shipping charges.

Thirdly Warranty.
I haven`t tested this one out yet, but my research seems to say that once you have bought your product ( at least Pentax products ) you can use your receipts/ proof of purchase to apply to Pentax and receive an International warranty valid for the period your original national warranty would have been.
I repeat, you should bear in mind I haven`t put this one to the test yet.

Fourthly :)
If you can find the deal you`re looking for at B&H then their site has a facility to allow you to pay all shipping and duties up front to them and you`ll just receive your package with nothing further to pay.
They do this calculation on the site before you pay, so it`s all very clear.
Unfortunately the deal I was looking for disappeared from their site so I went the Adorama route and this is how it went.

I ordered the following
K5 iis body, this included the free BG4 grip and 64GB Samsung SDXC card. .........$596.95
50mm f1.8 lens.............................................................................................................$79.95
35mm f2.4 lens...........................................................................................................$121.95
Shipping.......................................................................................................................$72.70

Total............................................................................................................................$871.55.

My calculation converted this to around £562. So all looks good.

There is a site which appears to calculate the cost importing good Import duty & taxes calculation result
and this predicted a total cost of £663 ( goods + shipping + VAT )

I intended paying by credit card so I looked at the providers site and figured that if they charged a conversion fee that it would be no more than about 2.5% or thereabouts, which is fair enough.
As it turns out my online banking statement says I have a balance to pay of £560.30 so it looks like a dollar conversion of 1.55 is about right.

Anyway I ordered ( Tuesday evening I think, UK time obviously ) and the package has just arrived.

The potential VAT to pay I had calculated at £112 and I thought there may be a small handling charge applied by the carrier ( UPS ) and this turned out to be a total of £121 ( VAT + handling charge ) which was payable at door on delivery.
The actual receipt stated £110 VAT and £11 brokerage surcharges.
No other duties were mentioned.

So in conclusion in my experience it is definitely worth the effort with total price of £681.30 for all the above items including shipping and duties.

I hope all that was worth reading

I was wondering, as I`m still not sure whether I`ve got the cash for this for a couple of days. Would it perhaps pay to wait for any potential Black Friday offers, which I think will be in about 4 or 5 weeks, I think.
As I`m a Brit and this "event" doesn`t happen over here I`m not sure how good the potential deals might be.
Thanks guys
