Battery grip not working on K5IIs

Oldbayrunner and forensicscientist, thank you for your help! I had to clean the contacts on the camera body twice but the grip is working now. I never had that happen before on my K10D or K-5 so didn't know what the cause might be. Thanks again to both of you.

I have a Pentax D-BG4 grip on my K5IIs. Until recently it had been working fine but now none of the controls on the grip are working, focus, shutter, AE-L, etc. The camera reads the battery okay and shows both the grip battery and in body battery. The grip works fine on my K5, shutter, focus, etc. are all working. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks again!

I'm sure just about everyone won't mind an extra day's wait.... unless someone out there is planning on getting married in the shirt next weekend. I suppose that might be cause for concern. But then, a Zombie Apocalypse teeshirt might do nicely instead... ;)

Jay, don't sweat it. Once again your efforts are appreciated so just enjoy the weekend!

$300-ish taller tripod - know of one?

I use this Slik also. I'm 6'6" and it's the first tripod I've owned that was comfortable for me to use. It does have a little more weight to it but I prefer that over a too light set of legs.

Nice printer, produces excellent prints, but takes sheet media only. You cannot use rolls with the 3880.

I believe that piece is removable so you can adjust a polarizing filter with the hood installed.

Opinions about "signing" prints.

I print on both canvas and fine art paper. I sign my canvases, whether gallery wrapped or framed, in the lower right corner with either a silver or gold acid free pen. I also sign my matted prints in the right lower corner but in pencil on the mat, never on the print itself. My personal opinion is that "electronic" signitures are tacky but I know several other photographers who do it. It's a personal choice.

As Phil B noted, signing on the mat might be problematic if the print was rematted. I worked in a frame show for several years and it was rare that someone would come in and have a signed mat replaced but it does happen from time to time. If it's necessary to remat a signed print, there are two things that could be done. First, simply place a new mat over the original and leave a 1/4" or so border of the old mat showing with the signature visible. Or, if you don't want a double mat, replace the single mat and have the framer attach the signed portion of the old mat to the back of the foam core mount or the frame itself.

Paper Choices

I've never been a big fan of glossy photo papers but love the look of luster or satin papers. I have an Epson Pro 4000 and use Lexjet Sunset Photo eSatin and get terrific prints from it. The eSatin gives the blacks and colors that "pop" you get with glossy paper but eliminates the problems associated with glossy paper like the hue change you noted. Lexjet has icc profiles you can download for each of their papers and I have found they work great.

I should note that 99.9% of my printing is for fine art photography not casual usage like family snapshots and the like. I've have tried cheaper papers, glossy and matte, for casual use and have never gotten great results with many of them but tried Ilford Gallerie Smooth Glossy and found it to be more than acceptable.

What are you using to process your photos on your computer?

Lightroom 2 for import, cataloguing, and raw adjustments. Elements 6 for other adjustments and layer work. Elements 4 for printing. I have installed add ons from Hidden Elements, Photo Wiz and Genuine Fractals into Elements and I'm very happy with what the program can do for me. Full blown PS is out of my budget and has more in it than I'd use.

Memory Card Size Limit

Yeah, 1GB cards are scarce and are becoming too small to use in new cameras. I think it's perfectly fine to format larger cards to 1GB and you can always reformat them to their manufactured capacity size later if you get a newer camera that uses larger cards. 2GB cards are plain cheap now and even 4GB cards are relatively inexpensive.

Memory Card Size Limit

My understanding is that your Optio was designed to use 10MB of onboard built in internal memory storage and provided an SD card slot as extra storage. I believe your camera will only recognize max 1GB SD cards which was probably the maximum storage limit of SD cards in 2004. You can use larger cards but, as you found out, the camera will only format and recognize 1GB of those larger cards. I just checked the firmware updates for your Optio and there was only one firmware update, version 1.01, but I didn't see anything about recognizing a higher capacity SD card so I think you're stuck with the 1GB max.

touchmyichi,

Best of luck on your show! In regards to hanging, you did say you were considering not framing your prints but at the very least you might want to consider having the prints drymounted on acid free foamcore and displaying them that way. It would be less expensive for you than framing and the foamcore is rigid and comes in standard white and in black. And if someone purchases a print, it's "ready for framing" and all they'd have to do is get their own frame. You'll have to find a picture or frame shop that does drymounting OR there is self stick foamcore available if you want to do it yourself. Be forewarned that while not dificult to do, the self stick is pretty sticky and not very forgiving so you have to be careful in positioning and laying the print down to avoid creases and air bubbles.

Hanging without a frame creates a problem but if you use a cloth backdrop, my suggestion would be to locate some type of hooks that you could tape to the backside of the print/foamcore then simply hook through the cloth backdrop. Check at a fabric store or an art and craft store. I believe I've seen thin S shaped hooks made specifically for hanging artwork on fabric panels at art shows but don't know exactly where you can get them. Maybe a Google search would help.

Just my two cents.
