I think this 1.4 would perform similarly. Very nice for shallow depth of field, in close-ups or portraits. I believe, again subjective, that it's quite similar to what I was getting from the FA 50, which I sold after I got the 43 ltd. The autofocus of the 43 was infinitely better than the FA50, and I didn't see why I would use the FA 50 over a fast manual lens. Ha, the 43 was so impressive I also got rid of my FA 35 and FA 28.

That's really true! My ten year old daughter liked the sears, and I can see why. The Pentax 1.4 isn't really in its strong suit here, either, and it holds up.

I don't think I've had 25, but I've had a bunch I've gotten rid of. The Rokinons and Chinons, for example, which were fun but I was pretty confident didn't stand up to the Pentaxes.

What do you think of that Tak? Is that the 1.4? I'm curious about it.

Hmm, I do also notice that the 43 has more distortion. I didn't really expect it to be quite as pronounced as it is. With the crop I suppose the focal distance is fairly diff.

The 43 and the Sears were the brightest. The M 1.4 was for sure the darkest. At full resolution, to my eye, the bokeh on the 1.7 was the most pleasing, the 1.4 next. The Sears especially had some color separation in the out of focus area on the upper right.

Yes, we were just messing around but it was interesting. Yes, eyes. These are lower res, but the 43 was the sharpest, with the Pentax 50 1.7 next and the Sears 1.7 next. I realized after we were finished that I have a Pentax 50 A 2.0, which I should have included. It didn't occur to me to get it out because I've already earmarked it for my wife, ha, because I think it's much softer than the others.

What could be 'different' about Pentax FF?

I responded to your statements about the Samsung. I didn't bring it up. Sorry I didn't bear out your fantasy.

Yes, sorry, I scrambled some rumor and my own fantasies. Fujitsu. Sorry, yes, sorry.

And a general comment: I love the speculation in this thread. The conservative takes and the out-there one. It does seem a little inevitable that the speculation will include other partnerships, etc, since Pentax isn't self sufficient. Alas.

I can't follow much of your post. Please quote people. Sony has stated, more or less, that the sensors they're selling are "generic," meaning nothing special. They've also said that they are not, as of now, selling the A7 sensor, so it would seem unlikely that's the sensor under development. The rest of this is stuff that has been discussed at length.

There is no Pentax FF, which is why people talk about APS-C. Another point not worth discussing.

And since we already have Sony and Fuji in our Pentax, why not speculate? Samsung could be a better partnership for Pentax. They have made K mount lenses and cameras. Samsung doesn't seem to want to share their lens market with anyone, but since their arch rival is Sony, maybe an alliance with the K mount could make sense. Pentax is hardly a threat. Ricoh's market cap is less than 1/20 of Samsung's. All speculation of course, but why not. It seems like the kind of speculation that makes up the forum. To my mind, Samsung tech in a Pentax sounds better than Sony and Fuji tech in a Pentax.

It has too many AF points? It's designed like a Canon? Ha, I'm not even sure that's a crumb. If this camera lives up to the specs, it is very impressive.

And the last time we got into a discussion like this, by the way, we went into the market capital of Ricoh, Sony, Fuji, Canon and Samsung, which now has me looking at the NX1 pretty hard, haha.

This is all great information, thanks! Yes, well I was calling it "face tracking," because I can't duplicate the problem without a hand or face. I do think there's some face recognition coding in there. But it does seem fixable, because the problem goes away at about 12 feet. (I suspected this, so I did some tests with the kids, ha.)

I didn't say I'm shooting 1/50 at 25 p. I shoot 30p. But that's rather interesting. I don't mind a little blur so much, and the low light benefit of shooting 1/40 or even 1/30 for a static situation, like an interview, is something I've been experimenting with. The "blur" also looks more filmic (film has blur), and seems to me a better approximation of film than 25p, and it covers some of the shake reduction problems. I'm not a sports photographer, ha.

As for the crop, yes, there's more crop, but if you try to apply crop reduction in premiere or fcx you get an even bigger crop, and you don't get the resolution, so it seems to me like it'd be better to do it in camera. The lesser evil.

I'm not against mechanical SR by any means, haha, but I'm just trying to understand their decision making process. When the software SR works in video mode, you can get good results. Unfortunately, that's an extremely unique situation: shallow depth of field with a static object that you're focused on in the foreground.

Ha, well, that would be amazing.

People do use the mechanical SR in video on the K5 and other cameras previous to the K-01 and K3. I've never heard of an SR failure either.

Hmm, something else entirely occurred to me, which is wildly optimistic perhaps. The in-lens stabilization for video is choppy (from what I've seen in the Sigmas). Samsung maybe has in-lens video stabilization that looks good, but there aren't many tests to look at. If it is the codec, for example, maybe Pentax is wise to pursue a software angle. I mean, a lot of ifs, but let's say in five years, every camera has a video codec three generations more advanced than what we have, and let's say all video is global shutter, and let's say pentax develops a way to turn off the face tracking if you want to turn it off, isn't that a much, much stronger direction than in-lens?

Sigma or not so sigmatic

Haha, I guess you really want it. Yes, used lenses, all of them, are cheaper than new lenses! On those Japan lenses, they're mislabeled. Those are not the OS lenses. Look at the pictures. It's the new version, which is not OS. Having just shipped a lens back to Japan (today!) I'm not real keen on the Japan thing, which I too am tempted by, and indeed keep trying. After all the time I've spent on this particular thingy I returned (did not match the product description), I definitely should have walked over to Adorama and paid 100 bucks more. I still haven't gotten my money back, by the way.

But as you please! To me that lens is too much of a half step. Nothing special, long in the tooth, gigantic, built to house OS, which it doesn't even have in the Pentax version. I'd way rather spend a few dollars more (you could also go used) for a Pentax or that Sigma art 17-35, which is a dynamite lens. Or even the Tokina 20-35 2.8, which is another half step but probably less money. For me on a zoom like that the AF is a consideration, otherwise you'd probably be using a prime and/or manual lens anyway. But just me, ha, prove me wrong if you want! I'm wrong all the time.

Anyway, of course, I mean, just my HO and totally your call!

I shouldn't be so grumpy maybe and I wasn't performing scientific tests. But the AF was sluggish and it just felt not special. The sigma 18-35 is much more exciting, and if you're going to drop that you may as well go for the Pentax. I suppose in the Sigma you could change the mount one day if you wanted. It's a zoom that's seen its day, and the new version is stripped of OS, which is a large part of the price point on this model. I should just say that at 500 or 600 bucks it's no longer a strong lens (that is the US price on Amazon and it's pretty close to that on ebay). I'd rather drop another hundred or so and get something terrific. Or just stick with the lower end Pentax and get your AF Ol Correct.

350? If you can find that, maybe. I only see that price range on lenses from Japan, which means another 60 dollars and a huge headache and an even bigger headache if you have to return it. I mean, used lenses? Yeah, I love them, and you can find great deals maybe, but that's true of the better lenses as well.

The sigma 17-50 is a mediocre lens. The only appeal is the OS, given how messed up the SR is on the K3. I've used that lens, and it is a last resort. For anyone making this decision, definitely go with a Pentax over this.

Hmm, I'm not sure this is still correct. The APSC lenses seem to be about the same price as the FF lenses, and the size of the FF cameras are coming down considerably.

This is a critical problem that I think people are aware of. There are only two lenses that have OS for the k mount in a focal range one would apply in non-tripod video, and these are discontinued. (The Sigma 17-50 and 17-70, or something like that.) Also, the bitrate is a huge problem. But those are last year's disappointments. If we're talking about a 2015 or 2016 camera that wants to have adequate video specs, 4k is there. It is there in Samsung, sort of there in Sony, there in Olympus, there in Panasonic, promised in Fuji (sort of, no?), and not yet in Canon/Nikon but maybe. Two years from now, it's just another deal-breaker.

I've been thinking about what Norm said, that FF is a priority, and there is a great deal of truth to that. On the other hand, if the FF has to have a major mp count to compete with the K3, am I wrong to think it might not need a new processor anyway? Also, even if the FF isn't 4k, won't any future APS-C need to be 4k? That's where that sensor size is going, no? The Samsung NX-1? Sony? A little easier to handle the 4k in APSC (the A7 4k is at a crop). Uh, also, with these new 4k codecs, aren't we looking at a more efficient use of the processor?

Anyhoo, I could be totally wrong, but if Pentax is going to stay in FF and APSC, it would seem to make sense that the next big update in APSC (after the FF) is video, which is maybe only a slightly faster time table than our projections here of two-four years behind everyone else, haha.

This is actually true of the K3 as well. If you work within its limitations, i.e. tripod, no SR, excellent lenses (manual just fine), you have a good b angle. Certainly it's good enough for most of the web stuff out there, which streams at an even lower bitrate.

I was 100% with you until that last bit. Everyone I know who shoots stills professionally also shoots and edits (at a basic level) video. I'd go even further: non professionals also shoot stills and shoot and edit videos—professors, journalists, dads, everyone. I suppose part of this is semantic, the definition of "professional." In broader tech culture, and the camera is no different, the accessibility and ease with which people bundle skills has eroded the boundaries of professions. A just-stills photographer in advertising, for example, at this point would be ... doomed!

The video is incredibly important to the market, and many people care about it, but I actually feel much better out the video side of the camera now that Pentax has come clean about their lack of commitment to that direction. (With the K3, however, they were making claims on video, so people were bound to be disappointed in a few areas.) What does a lack of commitment mean practically? It means that the Pentax video specs will continue to be 2-4 years behind. So if you want the bitrate and the 4k on a Pentax, you'll be waiting at least 2 years, and maybe 4. When the sensors and processors are so powerful that Pentax can deliver that stuff as an afterthought, you'll have it. And by the way, once you have that the video is useful to wedding photographers etc, who can shoot video and pull high resolution images from stills, like fashion photographers with 4k cameras are doing right now.

Could be wrong, but I don't think we'll see touch screen function until the video improves. First the kind of video object tracking of, uh, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, then the touch screen. At least that's been the rollout of the competition.

Does the sensor move in software SR? Really? I mean, aren't we a little presumptive to assume that Pentax will go back to a mechanical SR? Aren't we now talking three cameras back? Or is the KS1 mechanical SR?
