I'm looking at new cameras. I don't need to get one but I've been using the K30 for years now. I overcame the aperture failure by opening it up and soldering and messing with the magnet (solution found on the forums). It still works and when I put it back together it wasn't the best job ever.
I'm wondering how good the KP is. If I upgrade if I should get a KP or try for something like a K3 or K3II.

I'd love to take the k3 and the grip off your hands. I just don't have any need for the lenses. If you are willing to sell them separately let me know via pm.

So I can confirm that this solution WORKS. It's not easy. But I just did it and it works.
But stupid me, I didn't save where the screws goes.
Can someone guide me to where the proper screws goes?
Or I'll just have to go one by one and just kind of guess.

I love my Pentax. It's my first SLR and I've had mine since 2012-2013. Got about a good 8000 shutter count. I've had this issue for about a year now. This actually happened to me just a few months after my warranty was up.
Your only option to keep the 18-135 WR is to upgrade to a K3 or a K5.

Only way to get rid of the problem is to take rapid photos repeatedly until the aperture ring starts opening as it should. Some days it will take forever to get it started, while others it will be ready to go within 5-10 pictures. But thats the only solution I found for my K30.
I am going to wait for the K30 to die. Then I'll think about which company I should stick with. I might jump ship to Nikon/Sony. Or I might just save for a while and try to get a K1.

Do they grantee that it won't happen again ? Like a warranty of some sorts?
Mine developed the issue around 7,000 actuation. Literally developed 3 months after my warranty expired.
I'm shopping around for K3s right now. Hoping to land something in the price range of 350-400. Saw one guy selling his for 350. rest are going around 450-500 ish. I dont' get why people spend 500.... for a used K3 when they can buy a new one with warranty for $600.

I've heard the K50 model can have the same issue.
Thats why I'm not even trying for the K50.
I'm trying to avoid the build quality of K30/K50 all together right now.

Bought my K30 on 2012/2013. I'm up to around 7000+ actuation and I'm having the issue. I've actually emailed customer service about the issue, and they didn't even have the decency to reply back. I only own 3 lenses for my pentax, so if the K30 gives out completely I have no issue leaving Pentax name behind. I'll just sell all my lenses and just move on.
I'll be happy to sing the petition.

I think people who look for advice on photography are beginners. I bought my first DSLR (K30) 3 Years ago and I've been shooting much as I can, mostly my dog at home lol. If I could tell a beginner one thing to help them would be to forget about gear and subject matter. Just shoot everything and anything in manual mode when ever you can. Because eventually you will run into a moment you want to capture and you will know exactly what to do.

If you have the K30/K50 aperture issue, he best thing to do is take at least 5-10 pictures a day.
I notice this only developed when I shelved my camera for 4 months without use.
The best work around I've found is to put the aperture at its widest for the lens. Then take quick 3-5 burst shot. By 3-5th shot the aperture issue goes away.
Not a complete solution, but it will get your camera working like normal.
I'm just waiting for the camera to just give out completely one day. Only owned it for 2 years. So disappointing.

I actually sent an email to Pentax customer service. I told them about how my K30 is having issues and that it's pretty clear its a common issue that is spread among K30/K50 users.
Not even a replay stating I am out of warranty. They could of spent 1 minute to tell me something. But nope. Nothing.
I love my K30 but I don't know if I stand with Pentax anymore though.
When I think about moving away from the K30 I might just sell off all my gear and look else where.
The only temporary solution for this issue that I've come across is to put the f-stop to the lowest and take quick 3-5 burst shots. By 2-3 shots the issue goes away.

Yeah... I think i'm going to wait until the K30 dies on me. Sell all my lenses and move onto another brand.
It was nice while the Pentax fandom lasted.

I guess what I'm most bitter about is... poor build quality... which customers have to pay for.
When I buy anything for less than 100 dollars I expect it to last couple years.
If I pay for something that is more than 100 dollars I expect it to last for years and years.

Unfortunately warranty on my K30 ended and.... I emailed pentax customer service since this is a WELL known issue on forums.
I can't believe they won't even acknowledge this is an issue which is not cause by users and won't even be honorable enough to fix users having this issue which is THEIR fault.
Eh... if they don't make this right, I'll just have to talk shit about Pentax for the rest of my life.

Woke up and tested my camera again. Tested it out again. First 2 pictures were extremely underexposed again.
Yeah... i'm just extremely pissed. First experience with a brand leaves a ever lasting impression. I know people most of the time have good experience with Pentax... but this is not keeping me a happy person. I also bought a 35mm plastic fantastic lens and a 18-135mm WR lens because I thought I'll be a pentax user for life. Didn't think this camera would have issues within 2 years. Was hoping this camera would last at least 5-6 before it showed issues. Didn't even get up to 10k photos. Only up to 6k photos.
I emailed customer service, but they didn't even email me back. >.>
It's funny how it's a well documented issue iwth K30-K50 but they won't even give free repairs for people with this issue which is THEIR fault.

Yep having hte same issue and so is many people.
I want to consolidate this issue into one forum.
I think this is BS.
Ugh.... -_- should of bought the extended warranty on this. Didn't think it would crap out only after 2 years of use.

I bought my K30 August 20th 2013.
A week ago I was taking photos of my family visiting from out of town when I noticed the camera was acting extremely poorly. I had to put my ISO to 6400 to shoot my family members while sun was setting (there was plenty of light). The sky was orange and purple and the sun was reflecting off high rise from NYC.
I thought it was extremely strange that this was happening. I did a test when I got home and I tried to take pictures of my lamp at 100ISO -> 3200ISO. I shot in manual mode with 35mm plastic fantastic lens (which is the fastest lens i own). I set it to aperture 2.4 and shutter speed at 1/40. The photo at 3200 ISO came out dark when the photo should of been blown out.
It fixed itself while I clean the contacts between the body/lens. But the problem returned the next day when I tested it out again. It's not like I keep the camera in storage for months at a time. I take the camera out at least once a month. I've taken at least 6351 photos in the 2 years I've owned it (it's not like I've worn out the mechanisms inside), which is BS that it's already having issues.
I've contacted Pentax about the issue and how it's pretty well known that the aperture motor/sensor or w/e is having issues. I'm waiting on their reply and in hopes that they will make this right. If not I'll be putting up all my Pentax gear on the "for sale" portion of the forums. I'm especially pissed because this is my first DSLR I've ever owned.
It's funny because until this issue came to light, I was 100% sure I'll be a Pentax user for life. Now I'm not sure lol.
