I mailed my FLASH AF-160 FC on September 24, 2014.
USPS says it was received September 26, 2014.
Precision (web site) says received OCTOBER 8!!!, "in repair" OCOTOBER 8!!!
FULLY PREPAID BEFORE I mailed it.
DEAD SILENCE. No response to an email. I have not tried the phone because my heart won't withstand the elevated blood pressure.
Totally unacceptable!!!
Ricoh--how can I use up my camera requiring me to buy a new one without this (for my photography) CRITICAL accessory?
How can your image be improved using these boobs?
If I could, I would demand my flash back, let the boobs keep the money and find a non-boob to repair it.
Very angrily yours
Jack Nissen

Sorry, make that:
TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!

---------- Post added 10-30-14 at 01:00 PM ----------

Pretty amazing---
I did call Precision with my blood pressure medicine close at hand.
Ring, ring, ring!!!
No answer!!!
Swallowed one pill.
Then I called Ricoh, USA and repeated my complaint as above
Then I used the Ricoh web form to cut and paste the above missive and submitted it.
Not more than three minutes, my phone rang.
It was Vanessa at Precision!!!
She said she had heard from Ricoh that I was not happy. (DUH!!!)
I repeated my complaints as above.
She said their phone system was working just fine. (BS!)
Then she said she would send a message to "repair" and get back to me within 24 hours. (I will believe that when I see it.)
So, bottom line:
1) Ricoh is VERY responsive!!!;
2) Precision is concerned when Ricoh responds;
3) If you have a problem with Precision, contact Ricoh, USA.

Macro Pentax Auto Focus Extension Tubes

If you are here (PF), you probably know this trick. I am not the inventor, but I came up with the idea independently.
Pentax does not make an AF extension tube, nor does anyone else in the Pentax mount.
What to do?
Get an AF rear converter, remove all of the glass VOILA, a Pentax mount AF extension tube!
1.4x = ~ 18mm of extension, 2x = ~ 25mm of extension. I have combined them for ~ 43mm of extension.
The shorter the focal length of the lens, the greater the effect of the extension.
Enjoy.

It ain't a bottle of wine!!! (Downloaded and installed the firmware update last night. Took my camera out this morning. Images still look like some one soaked my camera in a tub of Pepsi Cola over night.)
This is what the lens (300mm F/4.5 FA*) that the 1.4xTC went behind is capable of. You don't want to see what I got with the TC.

Shanti--THANK YOU!!! No, I have never been that fond to the f/4 DA*. My old f/4.5 FA* is WAY sharper. But just got back from a shoot with it attached to the 1.4x and not wild about that either. But happy to report that at least the 300FA* works-I'd guess that the whole series does too.
Is there a third party company you can recommend that I send the F/4DA* to?
Thanks again.
Jack

Thanks JD-
I am not worried about the TC performance on this shot. The critter was far away, and moving fast. And I am not known to have the steadiest hand either.

Thanks Cali--
I use a single focus spot in the center, but your commet makes sense if the K5 opted for the twig rather than the feathers, that may be what happened.

I got mine a couple of days ago. I was in a hurry to meet a friend, so I did not download the firmware update--I just confirmed that it coupled and that the AF was operational and off I went. Disappointed so far with my 300mm f/4 DA*. More later after the firmware download.
Has anyone tried it with any of the FA* lenses?
The coyote was shot at a great distance out the passenger window of my friend's truck. I am not sure if he had shut off his engine by the time I made the exposure.
The hummer was quite close and shot from a tripod. The lighting for a hummer was difficult, but I did not like the lack of sharpness.

Sigma 120~400 OR 150~500

Thanks for all of the input---much appreciated. I went with the 150~500mm item. It arrived today. So far I am quite pleased with it. Things I am sure of: It is surprisingly light at just over four pounds, and VERY well balanced; my K3 AF worked just fine at the long end where the maximum aperture is only f/6.3; it is quiet. I am going to try to post an image--but if I can't figure it out, I will say that I am satisfied with the sharpness of the lens. Here goes my try:

---------- Post added 02-20-14 at 09:45 PM ----------

I am called a "Swan Whisperer" by some of my friends. This fellow was about fifteen feet from me when I made this image. Giottos tripod with a Manfrotto 222 pistol grip head. The 222 is no longer available sadly. But of all of the "pistol grip" heads, and I have tried them all, this one holds the lens most firmly.

J2, Mike & Visual--
Thanks for your input.
J2--I just sold my FA* 400mm f/2.8 because it HURT to carry it. Doubt the 600mm will be any lighter but I will check it out.
Visual--Thanks for the link--nice images.
Jack

---------- Post added 02-11-14 at 06:54 AM ----------

I just checked out the 600mm lens. Over fifteen pounds. The 400mm is over thirteen pounds. Beautiful lens, but way too heavy for me.

I will use the lens mostly for birds on a K5 or K3. I am not the strongest tog, by a long shot, nor am I the steadiest of hand. I ALWAYS use a tripod. Which would you buy? Thanks.

Thank goodness, and thanks Adam. If I saw Ricoh instead of Pentax on my future lenses and bodies, I would be MORE tempted to switch to the "C word" brand, or maybe the "S word" brand.

I just pre-ordered mine from B&H. Word of caution: If history is any predicter, you should wait precisely one week before ordering yours. If you do wait one week, you are almost assuredly going to save a hundred bucks or more.
I am giving serious connsideration to withdrawing my FA* 80~200mm f/2.8 from eBay--what a great combination it would be with this new teleconverter. But wait!!! If I withdraw the lens from eBay, how will I pay for the teleconverter? Decisions, dedisions!!

Thanks Tibbitts. I might consider that.
I have to wait a couple of more days to be sure eBay credits my account for the fee they charged when my lens "sold".

Thanks all.
My inquiry presupposed that the eBay "buyer" of my 400mm f/2.8 A* would actually pay for the lens. He/she did not! (Dirty rassafratz!)
So, I will have to wait and see if I ever get some money to buy any of these lenses.
Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Sent an email, still SILENCE!
Opened a "buyer did not pay" something or other at eBay. I have to wait four days then can relist without incurring the sold item fee.
Corresponding with the second high bidder who has indicated an interest at a price far less than the amount the defaulting bidder offered. Good guy. Going to try to accommodate him, but protect myself at the same time.
If the defaulter is OK, I wish he had the balls to reply. If he is not OK, I wish him well.
Luckily for him, I can not leave negative feedback. (BUT I am going to block him from future auctions AND I am going to id him in the "description" area of the relisting with a caution that listers of high priced items might consider blocking him.
More later.

The shorter the focal length, the more dramatic the effect of extension tubes. Pentax AF extension tibes can be made by gutting (removing the glass from) AF teleconverters. A 1.4x teleconverter usually yields about 18mm of extension; a 2x teleconverter usually yields about 25mm of extension. Yer gonna love it.

ANY explanation would be OK with me. What is so frustrating is reading his/her feedback, then this so wildly out of character behavior.
My options are "open a dispute", "second chance", and re-list.
I'd much rather be spending the money on a new lens.
Stay tuned.

This is weird.
An eBayer with a 100% positive feedback rating in 199 transactions bought my lens Sunday evening.
SILENCE!!!
Sent a note yesterday "Are you OK?"
SILENCE!!!
Sent another note just now.
Does anyone know "iaireiko"? Is he OK?
If I do not hear from him very soon, I am going to re-list the lens.
Too old to be angered, but not too old to be frustrated.
