I received my replacement KP (serial number 7350110) today!

I'm delighted to have a KP again but I must admit I've enjoyed using my old K3 for the last couple of weeks. I suspect I will be apprehensive about using my KP in snow or rain from now on, my old K3 will be my foul weather friend.

Attached is a photo of my new KP straight out of the box (taken with my K3) alongside the first image taken with my new KP (DA f1.8 50mm) this evening. :D

The young lady with the big nose is called Agnes.

Okay here is the latest update on my mad KP.

Pentax have countered my warranty claim for water damage to my KP by offering a brand new KP for £400. Although I am very disappointed with my old KP's weather resistance I am cognisant that Ricoh-Pentax UK only has is my word that I was not misusing the camera, therefore I've decided to take the offer.

So the moral of this story is that the weather resistance claims for the KP by Ricoh-Pentax should be treated very sceptically. I bought the KP especially for astrophotography and astrophotography in the British Isles often requires working a dewy conditions, from now on my old K3 is going to be my foul weather friend.

I use a D-FA 28-105 F3.5-5.6ED DC WR on my K3 and KP with no problem at all, it is tough, weatherproof lens that gives excellent results on APS-C, in fact I was so pleased with I bought a K1 to go with it. 😁

As you might remember Mike, I live in Wales.

What have whales in common with Wales? WATER!

American tourist says to local child on the sea front in Aberystwyth "Does it always rain in Wales?", child replies "I don't know I'm only eight years old".

What has the Welsh weather, my Pentax KP and the "Borg" aliens off Star Trek TNG got in common? "Resistance is futile!". ;)

Well the truth is that my KP had never been near salt water and nothing had been spilled over it (as far as I know). I mulled over the evidence for some time racking my brain trying to establish how the hell this mess happened. Part of the reason for me accepting the Ricoh offer of a 50% discount was that I couldn't easily prove there was no user miss-operation involved. Without doing some kind of analysis on the precipitate and having a closer look at the dismantled camera I can't add any more evidence to my version of events. The camera was used in falling snow > the snow had settled lightly on the top of the camera during use> there was a delay of around an hour before the exterior of the camera was dried thoroughly with paper towel > the camera was then left for around ten days before it was used again and the fault discovered > the camera may have been accidentally left switched on with the battery in (not good I know). In a previous life I was a telecommunications engineer and I often saw similar looking damage to circuit boards in PBXs and other telecoms kit that have got damp in use or during careless storage, the usual cause of the mess was assumed to be corrosion or the disintegration of board components due to the dampness, even perhaps a form of electrolysis. Water does not need help from salts or minerals to wreak havoc on electronics, plain old H2O can do the job all on it's own (see: Corrosion in Printed Circuit Boards ? Tempo Automation ? Medium). Whatever happened, the camera leaked!!!

I will do my best to get Ricoh/Pentax UK to honour their weather resistance marketing hyperbole.

Here you hit upon the topic of perceived value, true costs, hidden costs etc, etc, in the US there is currently a political retreat from international free trade because it is perceived as being bad for US workers, on the other hand those same US workers want the low prices under-regulated free trade produces, hmmm, tricky. "And ye shall hear of trade wars and rumours of trade wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass". :D Low prices usually have hidden costs, meat raised on antibiotics may be (is) leading to unstoppable human infections in the future, but who cares when the price of a burger is such good value at the moment?

100 shots from a battery sounds very poor indeed, I'm sure I get a lot more than that but I've not been counting. Are there quality issues with the early serial numbers? I think this is something that might require investigation, very subjectively I would say that my replacement KP creates better images than my first KP, the output from my first KP did not seem any better than my K3 but my later KP photos seem clearer, sharper and the colours are brighter. Here's a crop from a photograph I took in our garden this morning.

A couple of days ago I took this photo of The Moon using my KP with pixel shift enabled, the resulting DNG file was a not inconsiderable 110MB in size. The KP was attached to an Altair Astro Lightwave 72mm ED-R refractor telescope mounted on an Skywatcher EQ5 Synscan mount, the manual exposure was 1/125sec at ISO100, 0EV. This was my first attempt at using my KP's pixel shift through a telescope, it seems to have worked. :)

My first KP that suffered water ingress after use in snow was an early serial number and I suspect that something wasn't sealed properly, I never had a weather resistance problem with either of my K50s and haven't yet with my K3. Pentax met me half way on my warranty claim very quickly, so rather than fight on to prove a point I accepted a brand new replacement KP with a contribution of £400 from me. Bearing in mind the three thousand frame count on my soggy KP and that I retained my original Pentax branded battery worth £70 because I couldn't return it with the camera through the post in the UK, I don't feel too upset, just a bit disappointed. From now on when I use my new £900.00 KP in bad weather I will be more cautious and keep a £000.09 plastic bag over the top of it. It was an expensive lesson but life seems to be full of expensive lessons.

I am lucky enough to have both a K3 and a KP and I'm going to keep both.

I bought a KP on the premise that it was going to replace my original K3, but within a few days I decided to keep both as they are very different beasts. My K3 is a large solid lump with excellent ergonomics, it feels like it was hewn from the living rock and will last a lifetime; the KP on the other hand feels much lighter but perhaps slightly cramped to use. What makes the KP superior is that it is a veritable gadget-fest with the ability to turn in stunning image quality when shooting hand-held and in low light. I think the best way to describe the differences is that the K3 is happiest fitted with a DA* 300mm or a big zoom or landscape lens and mounted on a tripod; the KP excels fitted with a lightweight "Limited" lens and trying to create interesting hand-held images, finally I try to always keep my Ricoh GRii in my pocket just in case. My aged father had a saying "the things you see when you haven't got your gun", these days most people use their phone to capture "the things you see" but if you want to go one better I recommend a Ricoh GRii. :)

You may observe that I overindulge in my hobby of keeping fringe consumer brands alive, whether it be Pentax, Saab, Linux or Moto Guzzi, I try to do my best to preserve economic and technical diversity. I don't own a single Apple product! :):):):):)

If I recall correctly, when the KP was released Pentax said in their press statements that "the KP is not a replacement for the K3ii", it fills a different niche.

Well that's made me feel a whole lot better (not) !!! :(

I did consider fighting it out with Ricoh-Pentax UK but to be honest I can't really be bothered, my KP was beyond repair, so they are supplying a brand new replacement, hopefully not one of the early serial numbers. I will ring the original dealer tomorrow and express my displeasure, the repair centre was not particularly bothered whilst the dealer has been much more supportive. On the plus side I get a new camera, without a 2.6K shutter count, another new OEM battery (I've kept the original one because I was not allowed to post it), no stress and no more time wasted writing emails and making phone calls. It is not the result I wanted but at least I will get a KP back next week.

So to recap:

DON'T BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER'S WEATHER RESISTANCE CLAIMS FOR THE PENTAX KP!!

Thanks for that Kevin.

To create the profiles for the KP I used a free utility which is available here: GitHub - asalamon74/afzcamcreator: Corel AfterShot Pro afzcam creator. I ran it on my Mint Linux PC on the command line using "bash". The donor profiles I used were the ones available for the K70, I only ran the program once as a trial and it worked, but not perfectly, I haven't thought about it too much since because my KP has been away for repair. To run the utility you need a donor profile (eg K70, K3 etc) and an example of a DNG from your model of camera, I suspect the script reads the exif of the example DNG and then rewrites the donor profile using the new exif data. This may mean that the output profile was heavily influenced by the choice of example DNG, which was random (I just used the first one I came across) when I ran it. Perhaps it would be worth running the shell script again but using a carefully selected KP DNG image of a colour calibration chart. If I have time I will revisit the problem to see I can improve on this first effort, in the meanwhile perhaps someone else (if you can run the script) can have a go.

Nick

PS. I've just read the blurb on the developers page and noticed that unless you change the icc variable the profile produced uses some aftershot defaults, I will obviously have the run the script again. :-)

Pentax KP Profile for Aftershot Pro 3. Take two.

I've had another go at creating an Aftershot Pro 3 camera profile for the KP (v.2). DNGs in AFS Pro 3 using v.2 do not seem to suffer from the darkness. A copy of pentax2_kp-dng.afzcam is attached for anybody to test. :D
