I am neither an experienced nor a demanding photographer, so I am very satisfied with the 28mm F/3.5 Takumar. Thanks to your post, I took a look to my old photo gallery for possible comparison. I found two shots from my 2022 hiking trip to the Alps, which are shown below.

The left picture was shot with the 28mm F/3.5 Super-Takumar (the version with the 49mm filter thread) probably at F/8 or F/11 (time is 1/200 sec). The picture is shown at 100% size near the centre of the original frame (CA significantly increases towards corners for this lens). The right picture was shot with 50mm F/4 Macro-Takumar (the old pre-SMC 1:1 macro lens) probably at F/8 (time is 1/400 sec). To decrease the naturally higher resolution of the 50mm lens by the factor of 1.78x, I took both pictures as screenshots; the left one at 100% and the right one at 56% of the original size (I hope it does not favour the 50mm lens?).

The shots were not intended for comparison, I just admired the mountain as seen through the 28mm lens and the 50mm lens; they are not the best tests, but it is what I have at hand. The photos were taken 20 minutes apart, so the lighting conditions are similar. Although the picture on the left is overexposed, the 50mm lens shows not only better resolution and contrast, but also much higher richness in colours. The 50mm macro lens clearly wins (this lens would be a tough competitor for almost any lens), but the performance of the 28mm lens is still acceptable and the picture is reasonably sharp (particularly given its exposure handicap).

I should add that the pictures were shot at K-50; the difference will be probably highlighted in cameras with higher pixel resolution.

Thanks to Andrew and others for motivating me to take a closer look at the performance of the 28mm Tak. I still love the lens (also for its compact size and mechanics) and do not intend to replace it, but it is good to know about its limitations. Yes, the lens is great for taking close-by objects.

That's what struck me when I first started using the Tak 20. Center sharpness and microcontrast are amazing. Nice work from you again as well.

The VW picture hadn't shown for me when I quoted this so I'll add - very nice shot. Looks like the 20/4.5 dos well even wide open. My widest manual lens currently is the 24/3.5, which I really like. The 20/4.5 is definitely temping though ....

I like that lens too. 20/4.5. I bought mine on an eBay auction on my last night in Hoboken before flying out in the morning. I was the only bidder and got it for a good price. It was in good condition and included the hood and pouches for each of the lens and hood.

I like the mild barrel distortion.

Very nice! I have this lens, it never fails to put a smile on my face :) I'll be taking it to the local classic car meet later this month.

If you walk past this address, you can peer in through the substantial shrubs along the sidewalk and get a glimpse of the secret garden surrounding the house. Super Takumar 35/3.5.

I think they have not the same design. The K is far better than the Tak.

I had and tested the following 28mm lenses on a Sony A7 RIII: K 28/3.5, Hexanon AR 28/3.5 (7 elements), Nikkor AI's 28/2.8, S-M-C Takumar 28/3.5, Vivitar 28/2.5 and Pentacon 29/2.8.

The Pentax K, Hexanon and Nikkor are very similar in sharpness and color, very good lenses.
Probably the best is the K, but the differences are negligible. In normal use I don't notice a difference between them.

The Vivitar is not bad, but it is softer and less sharp.

The Takumar is slightly worse than the Vivitar, with edges that are never sharp.

The Pentacon is the worst of them all.

So I kept the first three and sold the rest.
Edited: the K is the one I use and like the most.

The users lens reviews on this Pentaxforums seem overly optimistic to me.
Really bad or mediocre lenses get an 8 or 9 out of 10 and I don't understand why. I don't trust or believe those reviews.
I sold my S-M-C Tak 3.5/28mm because it is not a good lens in any way. The edges and corners are never sharp.
K 3.5/28, Hexanon AR 3.5/28 (7 elements) and Nikkor AI's 2.8/28 are much better lenses.

Andrew - I always enjoy your pictures as they give me a chance to see a part of the world that I will probably never get to visit. I get a better feel for how Ecuador really is than any tourist brochure or National Geographic article could provide. I like everything about this one, and the crop is like an impressionist masterpiece, with the muted, blocky colors and rain streaks - the diametric opposite of what most people aim for these days, tack sharpness and bright colors. And looking at the crop, I am taken by all the patterns - the roof tiles, the brick wall, the tin roof, the leaves. Great work!

Thanks for linking the review - good read.

I've gotten hooked lately on pre-Spotmatics - SV/H3v, S2/H2, etc. Once my SV is fully CLA'd and checked out I look forward to shooting with it.

Ah good fun!

I remember those SV's being good fun.

You'll find someone developing film. Hipsters are still hanging out it seems. I was surprised i can get it developed here in Melbourne Aus, actually have x4 mail in options, so confident you will be fine :)

Have fun!
