Pentax K-3 III Pixel Shift Photos

I often try to make macro with pixel shift (naturally with tripod). If there is no wind and the subject calm it can sometimes be successful. These days I happened to make a pixel shift photography of a scopion fly with the Sigma 1:3.5/180mm macro lens.

The highest of the Taunus hills in Germany, called "Großer Feldberg" always is special for me. It's like coming home when I see it, and never get tired of looking at it. Autumn and winter yield the most attractive views. This is a picture I was happy to make some days ago, when sun and morning mist give it a very special touch.

I'd buy Pentax gear again. Maybe I'd rethink my lineup of lenses.

Sometimes I'm lucky enough to still find those little creatures. In the evening of the 6th of June this one was so nice to 'pose' for me. ;)

This morning I happend to see this wonderful animal. I only had the MX-1 with me, but I think, this shot is appealing enough to show.

Have a nice weekend!

You are right. I used a tripod to stabilize the camera position. And I took a lot of pictures, from which one third could be used for the final stack.

A very small spider I found this morning in the leaf of a stinging nettle. Low light in a tree shadow and a little wind made it difficult to get a decent shot. The ratio of almost 1:1 yielded a very small DOF. So I decided to try to stack a manual focused series of pictures. At last I succeeded and I'm halfways satisfied with the result. It it was easy, everyone could do it ;) .

Problem with pixel shift and photoshop

Thank You for the interesting information. I tried it out with K70 pixel shift DNGs but at the moment there seems to be some 'room for improvements'.
1.) It seems to me that the resulting DNGs - compressed or not - are not far as sharp as they should be. I could verify this with Lightzone and RAWTherapee, but I know of DxO users with the same results. So it seems to be a general problem.
2.) Darktable won't accept the converted DNGs as valid RAW files (skull symbol instead of picture preview).

Seems that some more work has to be done .... *sigh*

The deep standing sun throws his light from the right into the direction of the hills. They belong to the "Taunus", a low mountain range in Germany near Frankfurt. You can see the tower on the highest mountain.

It is a nice versatile camera. You can even get a filter adaptor which enables to fix polariser etc. in front of the lens and also gives it some protection (at the cost of being a bit bulkier). I like to take it with me at all opportunities when I don't want to carry a DSLR around.

Some autumn shots from last weekend ...

At the last day of August I managed to get a photo of this litte beauty. It was taken from tripod with 2 second self-timer to reduce vibrations. It was luck that the wind didn't make problems. The light was soft with rainclouds in the sky.

At the last day of September I shot this one in a part of the woods near my home place, just beside some old tumuli (grave hills) dating from the 'Hallstatt' time (about 800 b.C.). It is one part of the forest that didn't suffer from the last (dry) summers that much. Other parts are a pain to walk through and see all the devastation, but that's another story ...

It's good to see that even older Pentax digital camera models can easyly deliver astonishing results today. And they seem to last longer than many of us think.

I still have a K200D in my home, which I usw with older glass from time to time. I like the colours the CCD delivers.

Macro Common Blue in autumn

This is a small part of the picture from above in full resolution. You may at least get an idea why the Irix 150mm glass is a 'real performer' for me, and why the 24 MP of KP or K70 are enough for my needs.
The new APS-C camera will shurely be a very nice 'sweetheart' but let's be honest: the already existing hardware is really great!

... taken from tripod with self-timer (2 seconds) and pixel shift resulotion enhancement. Because of a little wind just one of 10 pictures gave me the desired result. But I'm very happy with it. Regrettably the uploaded picture cannot show the quality of the original photo.

Once again some butterflies. I think, the KP and the 100mm macro lens are a very good team: not heavy, and with a very good quality. The only thing I am missing is a focus stacking function ;) .

Have a nice weekend. :)

... not to forget that You have to fork out thousands of thousands to get adequate optics and even more: another thousands for a suitable computer equipment.
It's as useful for most photographers as a "Maybach" for drivers. Nice to see what's possible, but overkill for most of us...

IRIX 150 macro vs D-FA 100 WR macro ?
Posted By forest_bear59
Replies: 17

Due to the internal focusing of the IRIX its focal length decreases when approaching the subject. At 1:1 it's about 120mm effective. Thus the focal length advantage shrinks at higher scale. Adding to this the compactness of the Pentax 100mm, its better performance wide open, the AF and focus shift I know what I would recommend...

But the IRIX isn't bad at all and is a pleasure to use. And after all even the little difference of focal length at 1:1 will help a lot regarding the flight distance of insects for example.

This is a fusion of four pictures, which I have taken with the hope to stack them. Alas, there have been little movements between the exposures so there was the need for some retouching. I am not unhappy with the result but I know it can be done better. Next time ;) ...
