my 18-55mm WR also came with a hood. I suspect those that are not receiving hoods with there kits lens may be victims of gray market sales or buying return items sold as new that may have been returned without the hood. ---------- Post added 02-16-14 at 11:15 PM ----------

Ok, Lets build a fictional FF K-1s together.
Everyone add JUST ONE feature that they would most like to see in a fictional K-1s.
Or add a drawing or image of the feature.
Make sure you don't add a feature that has already been listed. (try not to add conflicting features)
The longer this thread goes the more meditation on features will be needed.
Ok I'll start with:
Full Frame and__________
Features added by Pentax Forums FF development team:
Full Frame
Clean styling
Large Optical Viewfinder
6.66 MP per a square centimeter
K-3 styling
Size of a LX film camera (possibly mirrorless)
Mirrorless (not sure we can do that with optical viewfinder though, possible rangefinder)
50mm f1.4 metal kit lens
Shake Reduction
Styled by the same person who designed the Pentax Q
4K 60p
Expand ISO lower and higher
Dedicated DOF preview lever or button
Electronic shutter to sync up to 1/8000th.
Fast AF
Retro look, but not retro ergonomics
De-cripple K-mount. More friendly exposure mode with K- and M-series manual lenses.
Should come in the hands of a sexy Pentax lady, that just got caught in the rain and is soaking wet (even though the camera is fine, if you still happen to care) ?
Development kit, or an open platform to program my own filters, profiles, functions (Firmware editor)
Fuji-style hybrid VF. (but with a mirror/pentaprism setup instead of see-through).
Interchangeable viewfinder
Retain TTL and aHSS in addition to P-TTL
Optional battery grip.
Tilt LCD
Live "Zebras" in video mode.
Choice between 14-bit RAW and 12-bit RAW with a double sized buffer
Front and Rear E-Dials
9 frames per a second.
AF points more spread over the frame (all cross sensitive)
Left Handed version?
(I think we may be designing a Super Camera)

I used to get that effect all the time with film and a faulty film advance mechanism :p
There actually is an odd poor mans way of doing it if you don't have a strobe.
#1 Set a low ISO, narrow aperture, in a dimly lit room with back lighting, and some faint front lighting (like the window in the example picture)
#2 Set the camera on a tripod or stable place like a floor.(it is most important that the camera not move for this shot)
#3 have your model set up in one position
#4 set the camera up for oh say like 5 to 8 seconds (experiment) prolonged BULB or timed exposure
#5 set the camera to manual focus and preset the focus
#6 get a dense black plastic bag or cloth or paper and have it ready in one hand
#7 take the picture of the model in one position for a second or so then cover (or curtain) the lens quickly with the black paper or bag (preferably without touching the camera), have the model move quickly, uncover the lens, finish the shot.
#8 exclaim "WALA!" or "WHAT THE HECK we have to do it over again!" depending on the outcome.
#9 Most likely you will have to do it over again
#10 experiment, have fun. keep your model laughing.

misinformed, purchase based on initial impression reviews that were not conducted over a long period of time. Didn't do enough research before i bought it.

I realize this is an old post, but after some testing with my 18-55mm , i have been able to reproduce the OP's problem And yep it's Focusing Beyond Infinity. I have gotten my k-30 to do this several times when focusing on distant landscapes. the most consistant example of FBI is taking shots of the Moon, at any exposure setting it FBI'ed consistently. Correction with manual focus was necessary. Yet while focusing on objects withing a hundred feet it seems fine.

The other day i was taking some lovely sunset photos with my bran new k-30. while i was reviewing the shots, i noticed a squiggly line in each photo. THE HORROR! "my bran new camera is defective!!!" NOPE.. turns out it was just lint. WHEW , a sigh of relief, a simple sensor dust removal function and all is well.
But that got me thinking HOW in the world did lint get into a weather sealed camera??
I've never had lint on a sensor before, dust yes but never lint.
And I always keep a lens on my camera.
Then it occurred to me, along with the new camera i also acquired a new camera bag.
My previous camera bags had always been Nylon lined, but this one was Felt lined!
Under closer inspection i found Little felt lint hairs everywhere on everything including, front and back of my lenses!
So just a warning if you are looking at that awesome camera bag from china on ebay,,, make sure the liner isn't felt ;):D

My 2 cents ( worth approximately 0.00.75c)
i have tried the Sony 18-55 DT on the a580 16mp, a560 14mp and a100 10mp.->(the a100 yielded the sharpest image with the18-55mm DT, mainly because the lower resolution and the a100 allowed for complete turning off of noise reduction in contrast to the a560 and a580. However the 18-55 DT was nothing compared to the 16-50mm f/2.8 SAL1650) <- i would still be using this equipment if it had not been stolen
i have tried the Nikon 18-55 II on the D5100 16mp ->(Surprisingly bad lens:eek: could not get a sharp image to save my life and there was no front or back focusing to blame)
i have tried the Canon 18-55mm on the 3ti 18mp-> (Actually a very nice and capable camera, but i didn't like the feel of the grip. it hurt my hand. Lens was OK)
I have tried the Pentax 18-55 NON-WR plastic mount on k-30 16mp ->(Meh.... was not impressed)
I have tried the Pentax 18-55 WR metal mount on the k-30. ->
And I have to say, even though i was a bit of a Sony/Minolta fanboy, that this Pentax18-55 WR version is by far the best of all of the above 18-55mm lenes that i have tried.
That having been said,, let me just nullify all of the above by saying..... Each camera is different.:D:p
