That will happen when the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers all empty into the Murray!!!
There is a LOT of water heading towards Goolwa and surrounds.
There will be a few wet feet in SA then.

The old adage the more we have the less satisfied we are seems relevant. Do note that the complaints start up every single time Pentax releases a new product no matter what it is.
It's too expensive: Pentax is doomed.
It doesn't have some particular obscure feature: Pentax is doomed.
They stripped some particular obscure feature from the new product: Pentax is doomed.
It doesn't have flagship features at an entry level price: Pentax is doomed and I'm jumping ship.

People have been asking for a new entry level camera for some time now. They say Pentax needs to make a new sub $1K (preferably less) camera to stay relevant in the market. An entry level price point camera is not going to be a full featured enthusiast camera. That's not a realistic expectation, it's going to be a somewhat bare bones camera using technology that has been on the shelf long enough that it can go into a low price product.

It's going to be a camera aimed at the occasional user. It's going to be a camera that spends most of it's life buried under dirty socks in the back of a closet.

People, you got your wish, you are getting your new entry level camera. I didn't think it was going to happen, I figured Pentax would abandon the entry level market for dead and concentrate on cameras that had ample separation from cell phones.

People, you got your wish, you got a budget camera made for people who still want an SLR experience.

People are calling it a rehash because it has more or less the same feature set as the camera that came before it. I've got news for you, every camera made in the last two decades has the same feature set as the one that came before it, except sometimes they drop a higher density sensor into it and do a tweak here and there because they've figured out how to make a minor improvement.

People, you got your wish. Maybe stop complaining because what you wished for is what you already had.

Pentax K-1 mark iii

I had a chance to speak to someone from Pentax Japan a few weeks ago and he explained the situation with the K-1 II and its successor. The conclusion is that I don't think we can expect see anything released this year.

It seems that the K-1 II is currently selling much better than people seem to think. The reason is the super competitive price. If you are a typical Pentax shooter, focusing on stills mainly, there is nothing else on the market that comes close to the K-1 II for image quality and features, even though it is "2016 technology". When you think about it, newer cameras are faster or more automated, but their sensors are not really any better in terms of image quality than the K-1 II. And the price inflation of the other camera brands just makes the K-1 II seem even better value.

At the same time, current 2022 component costs mean that a K-1 III would not be price competitive. They could do it, but you probably wouldn't want to pay for it. It would be the like the complaints from people who wished they'd bought the KP only after seeing how expensive the K-3 III was, but worse. So the message was that Pentax is waiting to provide a camera that offers a good price/peformance balance before replacing the K-1 II. Pentax understand that their customers are cost-conscious.

I took a look at DPR's camera timeline and was surprised to see that this year only two full frame cameras have been announced, both in January. It was the Canon R5C (video model) and the Leica M11. Even if you look to last year, almost all of the full frame cameras released were very high-end or more expensive than their predecessors (think the A7IV). Something is going on with full frame sensor supply, making them scarce and expensive. It might be why so many crop sensor cameras have been released.

One more interesting thing the Pentax guy said was that even though the K-3 III is the latest model, they see the K-1 series as the default recommendation for most photographers. They recommend the K-3 III for people who prioritize portability or speed, but for most users they think the K-1 II is the best choice. This leads me to believe that they absolutely do consider the K-1 series to be their principle product, so a successor is inevitable. When it comes, it will be a carefully designed balance of cost performance, but it will inevitably cost more that the K-1 II because everything is getting more expensive these days.

I also think that people sitting on the fence about the K-1 II should just go ahead and get it. It's such a good value proposition even in 2022.

Thanks for all your input. I ended up purchasing a used K-3 Mark II. It was $1000 less than a Mark III. It is also heads above my K100D Super. I balanced budget and performance and after 5 minutes I know I made a good decision. All of your input was helpful. Now I just need to learn how to take advantage of it's features.

Debating the HD FA 43mm - thoughts?

A bit soft? I disagree - 43 is sharp enough dead center where a FA50/1.4 would still be mush. Images below are at f/1.9 and it does have pixie dust :)

Musical Bokeh by Robbie Corrigan, on Flickr

Rain Rain Go Away by Robbie Corrigan, on Flickr

And I'd suggest that it ramps up its sharpness faster that either the 50/1.7 or 50/1.4 but it is not the right lens if you're looking for 'sharp' bokeh! These are @f/4ish

Lastly, I seem to have a special one that returns smooth bokeh with busy backgrounds

You need to learn the 43, it will help you, tease you, punish you but it won't hold your hand and every now and again it will reward you. 43 over the older 50s? any day of the week, 43 over the big 50? I'd suggest if you can have both get them, different tools for different jobs. 43 over a 50/1.2? Depends on your eyesight and focusing skills, the 43 will rule between f/2 - f/5.6 but the 50/1.2 can do stuff the 43 can't between f/1.2 - f/2

We all knew it was coming, but I too am deeply saddened by this news.
Not for Steve though, because the last few years of intolerable suffering are now over. The inability to get enough breath is one of the most primal of fears. That he endured it so bravely and for so long is a testament to his character.
But I'm sad for us: the Pentax Forums community, which has benefited from his wisdom, grace and humility for many years. We are all richer for the time he spent with us, and poorer for his departure.
And, of course, my heart goes out to his loved ones. I am certain they are many.

As someone who got the message from Steve’s sister I saw the message with the subject “Steve” with dread. I read it last night and I had planned to post about it, but I hadn’t yet found the words. Steve will be missed. I knew him only here, and we had no direct emotional ties. But we shared a passion for cameras and photos and discussion and education and knowledge. We bonded over simply preferring excellence over mediocrity and preferring to be part of the solution rather than simply complaining.

His legacy should be to remind all of us we aren’t going to be here forever. Whatever you plan to do, do it while you can. Find a way to connect with who and what you love, and spend time doing things that fit with that in mind.

Goodbye Steve… I hope your life was as fulfilling to you as it was to us. Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us. You will be missed.

Such sad news. Steve was a hugely skilled and experienced photographer who was always happy to share his knowledge with those willing to learn from him. A true gentleman, and an exemplar of how to act with grace and civility in a public forum. This will be a lesser place without him.

RIP Steve.

This is indeed such sad news. Steve was what this forum was all about; sharing knowledge, kindness, and above all respect to all. I always clicked on his posts because I knew I'd acquire more knowledge from him.

Extending comfort to Steve's family.

Rest in Peace Steve, you will always be missed on this forum.

In regards to my previous post some months agp regarding terminal illness(LINK), it seemed that an update is in order. I was informed this week that my efforts to secure a lung transplant have failed (too debilitated too survive the procedure). In response, I have shifted my focus to palliative care and (eventually) hospice with an emphasis to leave as many traces of myself as I can before bidding this world one last smile of farewell.

As for Pentax Forums, those traces will likely run like this:
  • Legacy Flash Review section for the Vivitar 3500 (was posted as a stub, but apparently removed by the mods.) There will also be a full article in the lighting subforum.

  • My notes (full forum article) and camera review of the Pentax *ist D.

  • Gear...yes, that reads GEAR,
I am instructing the executor of my estate to limit offers of my stuff to the market place on this site. Many things will be offered free for cost of shipping. In addition, I also intend to gift several items, some quite desirable, to Pentax Forum for use as contest prizes and other site promotion feature. I have yet to spring this plan on them. I am sure they will be thrilled. ;)

Y'all here at PF are an amazing bunch and have been so good to me. My daughter will post a final fair-well after my demise.
