What is your budget?
Image quality wise a GR3 or GR3x might suit, if in budget.

So many wonderful images here.
Short-beaked Echidna. These are monotremes (egg-laying mammals), like platypus. The hind feet face backwards to help them dig in when they feel threatened. Very effective, but it does produce a very distinctive gait. Very exciting to get such a clear shot. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 300mm |

Hi Steve. I had similar experiences to you when I went from an *istDS to a K-5, and then from the K-5 to my current K-3II. I couldn’t figure out why my photos were initially no better; indeed they were often worse. I then read in threads in this forum about the effects of increasing mega-pixelage on image sharpness, in that it was necessary to change my technique since the higher-resolution cameras were less forgiving. There was also the ability to fine-tune the focus on the newer cameras.
I had a 16-45/f4 as standard lens on the *istDS (I still have that combination, now unused), and couldn’t understand why the K-5 wasn’t doing better with it. After all, moving from 6 to 16MP was a big increase in resolution - about the same as from your K20 to the K-3. Following research here, I did two things; modified my shooting style to consciously use faster shutter speeds, and fine-tuned the focus on the lenses I used. The result was like lifting a curtain; so much so that I changed the 16-45 for the 20-40 Limited for the K-5. It was an improvement - but not as much as I’d hoped for.
So when I went from the 16MP K-5 to the 24MP K-3II, I went through the same process again, and the 20-40 … got better. The point I’m trying to make is that changing hardware in and of itself didn’t necessarily improve things; for me it was more learning how to get the best out of them.
Your mileage may vary. I don’t try to photograph active five-year-olds, which I think would be a challenge for any system. All I can suggest might be to think about your technique first, rather than spending shedloads of cash and potentially not seeing the difference that you hope for. 😉

I ma struggling with understanding the ISO Auto Settings and in particular the manual (Page 57) states that you can make alterations to the settings in the Camera 2 Menu options.
However I am unable to change any of the settings other than the Upper and Lower limits and the rest (Min Shutter Speed Op, ISO Auto with Min Speed and Minimum Shutter Speed) are greyed out. (I have a DA* lens fitted)
While in the realms of ISO settings I am also confused at how the 'One Push ISO Auto function works..
Can anyone explain how these all work in plain English please?

Here's a handheld moon shot I made last Friday. It's made with my full spectrum converted K-3II with the DFA150-450 mounted. 450mm 1/500s f/8 ISO560, cropped to about half.
My camera does let in a bit more light because of the conversion, but at night the difference isn't that much.
I found the following rule (as mentioned in the previous post as I was typing this): set aperture to f/11 and shutter speed to 1 over the ISO value you have set. Hence focal length of your lens would determine the ISO you set. As you see I did open up the aperture slightly more because I wanted the moon to be as bright as possible without overexposing, so I would have maximum image data for post processing. You will probably have to as well since the eclipsed moon will be quite a bit dimmer.
The processing I did is not what you would do for the eclipse. I pushed saturation to the max to get the colours you see. For the eclipse you would probably prefer a softer tone?
Note that I did stack 18 images to get better resolution and a cleaner image. Saturation maxing out would have shown too much colour noise if I hadn't. |

I think 45mp would be the most I'd enjoy. I'd prefer ISO performance over straight resolution, especially when I don't feel like I'm missing much with the existing 36mp sensor. I'd rather they focus some of the BOM cost on those silicon and AF improvements a la K3iii and maybe some other software-side improvements... maybe some more computation photography work on the MC to make handheld shots and those with motion a little better? They don't suck now, but other brands (olympus) have shown some elevated potential is possible with a handheld high res mode.
All that to say that even if they kept the 36mp sensor I'd not be upset, I don't feel like that's the short straw in the K-1 by a long shot.

Yes, and Fujifilm uses 2 million of the sensor's pixels for PDAF, so it's functionally really a 24 megapixel sensor in Fujifilm's case. I hope Pentax hasn't gone down that road.

Harsh
My primary reason for getting hold of this new 85 is this young lady, my 4yo daughter Hazel. I've other reasons too, I like the Pentax system, I am liking the transitions from focus to out of focus that I've seen so far, I like the fact that it will be built to the same quality as its little brother, I like the philosophy of what the engineers set out to do. The whole crop vs FF is null and void to me, I jump between both as I see fit or whichever camera is closest to me at the time.
I suppose what I'm trying to say here is that I reject the notion that I'm a gear obsessed, wealthy collector. I rarely publish photos of my daughter but I have thousands, and I won't bat an eyelid at the price, weight if it gets me a single wow shot of her over the coming months, because touch wood if in 20 years time I'm still around, I'll be able to look back, and see through imagery my baby girl growing up.
We all have our reasons for photography, some like me are in it as a hobby, some make it their professional role in life, some like the technical aspect, some the artistry.
So perhaps we can shut out the naysayers from other camps, naysayers that don't see the value or engineering nous needed to create this optic and celebrate its release, its availability, and the sheer hard work & talent to develop this lens and concentrate on what it might be able to do, which is capture that moment in time before it is lost except in our memories with its own unique flavour.
It us all about the images after all and for me, a lot will be of a doting father taking shots of his daughter. Price of that is €2000, value to me is priceless.

I'm disappointed, a day or two away from preorders opening up and all people want to talk about is 3rd party glass and older stuff! Samyang, yangsan...
A * lens is a big deal, you only get less than 6 or 7 per generation. Standing over the photographic world like an optical colossus. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus users all over the world look into their kit bags and feel that bit more insignificant. You see they know, oh they can point to charts and say my one is faster, my one is lighter, but deep deep down inside they know that when Pentax say they are going to release a Star, it's going to be good, better than good, sublime even. It will test well but it will also resolve emotion, a memory, a feeling in ways that they kinda can comprehend but they will chose to fall back on the usual excuses
- well everyone knows the 'Pros' (a Pro, I really hate that term, photography is an art form, if you get good enough, practise enough, you become a Master, not a Pro) use these;
or technology is going mirrorless; or some other little excuse that will allow them go back into their happy place :)
We on the other hand, get to use am optic that comes from a known optical powerhouse, we can discover what it is to mount it on our K-1s and the only thing to be wary of is if our technique is good enough, is our composition good enough, have we captured the light to the best of our ability. A * is you the photographer looking into the mirror and having no excuses, because it won't be the lens fault, it's the best that it can be at this moment in time for a given price.
