Late to the Party - Pentax 645D for portraits ?

It's a "little" wonderful camera, and it excels at landscape and portraits, IMO. Both because the sensor (CCD colors rule!) and the format (any MF surpasses FF in bokeh and/or target isolation in the same lens quality and light conditions)

I can live with 1/250, but it means lower my ISO film to 100 (I do basically daylight shooting) or opening too much with my current 200ISO setting.

I will take an eye into that light sealing, but I want not to spend more cash in the soviet cube. I'm just wondering which my next 6x6 will be (I love the P67, but I love more the square format), another cube or a Pentasix-ish one.

Thanks, mate.

This is my best shoot. I digitized it using a phone, so don't look at it too nearly, it's the main image that appeals to me :)

I'm still experimenting with lamps, tripod and a camera, but it's boring :P

Oh, and it seems the titanium curtain leaves "light waves" into the film if I shoot at high speeds... I've ruined a lot of shoots because that, I just knew the reason yesterday morning, thanks to the araxphoto people (I googled a lot for it but were not able to find anything).

Still trying to find a way to digitalize them. Some of them were fine enough (I guess), but the cartridge loader I used doesn't fit tight enough and let some light reach the negative, and it shows mainly the curtain's reflex, I bet.

As soon as I find a good way to digitalize my disasters I'll post some of them here :)

I had that app before it became a pay one (I don't care about, its prize is ridiculous), but never felt "safe" with it. I suppose I never understood how it works *facepalm*

Nice pics, btw

I'll keep carrying the MX, because it allows me to take the "small pictures", while saving the only 12 shots for the Salyut :)

But about the meter app... any really good around? I tried some and I'm not sure about its accuracy.

Fast update: I bought a crappy Salyut-S, and a Pentax MX with an M50f1.7 to use as photometer (I'm useless trying to measure light... yet). I changed the 50 1.7 for a 40 2.8 because its size and, well, the 1.7 came with a bit of fungus.

I'm happy. It's not about the (lack of) quality of my pictures, it's just the fun I have looking down to that window, the time it takes to compose and the thundering noise of the copper curtain. The results... well, today I got my first reel and it sucks. I don't know if they ruined it in the revealing developing room or if my camera just ruined the reel by itself, but really? I don't care. I'll keep looking through that new window and become amazed by its bokeh.

My colleagues make fun of me because this...

But I really love what I'm seeing:

(my apologies, I don't know how to resize linked pictures)

Now I have my chemicals, and few things to begin my new side as "reel destroyer" (I'm pretty sure I'll ruin the first... twenty?)

I myself made the jump from the *istDS to the 645D and I can tell you it's almost the same camera, just a bit bulkier and a few more pixels. But you can get the same feelings (naivety?) from both cameras, in my opinion. Sadly, I've been caught by a 6x6 waist-level viewfinder, and I'm planning to sell mine to a friend as soon as he has the money :)

Just a fast update... I bought a Fujifilm X-A3, who I plan to use with my beloved K35 f3.5 in 1:1 crop mode...

AND

an old almost-working piece of iron caled Salyut-C with an almost destroyed 80 f2.8... the seller told me it works properly, and it sounds properly, although the focus ring is plainly wrong (the lens had a big hit for sure) and the focusing screen seems darker than expected, although I'm lame (and I cannot go outside to test it properly

BUT

I love the feeling and the pop-up effect of the items in the viewer, and I'm sure I'll be able to carry the Fuji everywhere (well, with a proper lens, because the adapter and the K35 are a bit big for a pocket camera :P )

I cannot wait 'til I'll can go outside to play with my new toys... I've even thought about buy a couple of 120 reels to test.

I'll keep you posted, thanks for all your advices.

I'm trying to decide between a Yashica-24 and a Yashica-635, both pretty cheap, both in working state and near my house. The second one has more points, because it's focused with the right hand. I have more precision with the right hand, while I have a more steady left hand.

So...

Jokes apart, I care about the pictures, but not much really. It's the process of taking them that makes me feel fine. So it discards @ToniW advice (although it's welcomed).

I am catalan, so my market prices are the european sellers' ones. It means speculation, speculation, speculation and the cheapest P67 is over 500€, just the body. I can have a TLR for less than 100€, and it comes with the lens :P

@rdenney I'm looking the Arax site... it's still more expensive than I want to spend "on an experiment", but looks pretty impressive.

@zoneV the cameras I find under that name have just a small viewfinder.

Yay, but remember, most of my pictures come from walks (some of them long ones) with other people with digital or handled analogical cameras. Usually I cannot tell them "hey! hold on for five minutes while I go under my blanket to look downwards". They will leave me as if I was James May in a trip through Africa...

Didn't think about the TLRs... I was focused on interchangeable lenses, but I think you'd be right: just for walking and "the feeling" I don't need to exchange lenses (I was thinking in a single 80mm). I suppose I was biased because I thought about pentacon six mounts and the 180 monster to share between analogic and digital cameras.
I'll check those cameras, I liked their finders too.

I'm not sure if you were joking, but all this crap comes from a local meeting where a colleague carried one of those, just a little smaller...

I must admit I thought seriously about it, but every picture took ages to take, and it's not practical when most of my walks are with colleagues...

As I said somewhere, I don't consider myself a photographer, I don't consider myself even a hobbyist. I'm in this world because I needed an excuse to share time and experiences with my daughter.

BUT, time passes, and you get used to it. Few months after purchasing my first Pentax (the mighty K-5), I noticed I was "seeking" frames around. For me, a good picture is most about the frame (forget the rules, just find a soothing/shocking frame, and you've got me).

More time have passed (five years) and more cameras (K-5IIs, *istDS, MG, a jinx D700, and now a 645D), and I still see photography as "the act to put images on a frame", or better "the act to frame images".

So, after put my hands over the 645D (or better, after put my eye rear its viewfinder) I noticed I take less pictures and just peek through it most of the time. As I said somewhere (and my apologies for the iteration), I like to compose, put the focus where I want and once the click sounds, I lose all interest in the picture.

I reached a conclusion: I don't like pictures the most, I just fell in love with viewfinders. The bigger, the better. The most de-focusing, the better.

The next step, then, is to find the largest viewfinder available. I would spend the rest of my photographic life just walking and looking at my waist

I know some of you (most of you) come from still at the analogic path, and most of you have used these cameras.

As a self-claimed pentaxian, I would love to put my hands on a 67 or a 6x7 just because the brand, but the ones at my range (EU ebay) are out of my economical range (there are a lot of speculators). I must check other options.

I have two different options, and I would love you to give me some experiences about these.

Option 1: the classy and versatile cube
Something like a Kiev 88, in the Hasselblad-like line, but cheaper (I don't care about the quality of the pictures -yet-). My option is to purchase one of these, with a lens and three loaders: BW low ISO, BW high ISO and colour. It will allow me to take the images in any format, and gives me some freedom (less "I cannot take this picture").

Option 2: the oversized FF
Like the Kiev 60 or the Practisix. They are cheaper, and seem less prone to break. I'm not sure if they have other advantages over the cubes. BUT their main disadvantage is you are forced to keep your cartridge until it's full.

Am I missing anything? Any thoughts?

Really, any hint, experience, thought will be highly appreciated.
(and for those suspicious: no, I'm not trolling you, I'm just this weird)

I wish I had not disappointed you :P
I never claimed myself a photographer, I'm on this hobby because I needed an excuse to share something with my daughter after a divorce, and she liked to "steal" my Oly E-420 and return it to me only when the card was full or the battery empty, so I asked her if she liked to take pictures, she said yes, and I bought a pair of Pentax to be able to share lenses (the Oly 4/3 were failing into oblivion, and about quality/price ratio, none beats a Pentax set).

I must admit I begun to "watch" things (look them in a different way... some sort of "mental composing") after using my K-5, and because that, maybe someone would call me "photographer", but I have not the love for the image I see people here has, I'm just happy watching how the picture itself is formed in a viewscreen when I turn (manually, always manually) my focus barrel. I enjoy it far much more than to see the pictures I took. Once the click has sounded, I lose all interest on the image :(

There are technical, optical and sentimental answers for that question.

For the same amount of pixels, the biggest the sensor, the better it tolerates "wrong" lights. With the same pixel density, however, I doubt there will be a real difference over it.

I'm not sure why, but even with "equivalent" sensors (densities, type, etc), the bigger the sensor, the better the "pop" effect... isolation of the subject from the background.

Then it's the feelings... I felt in love with the 645D viewfinder, and I just miss a bigger one, if possible with split focusing screen. I must admit I'm thinking about moving to analogic just because I want big split screen viewfinders (seagull, rolleiflex, pentacon six...). I don't care about the picture itself, but I love to peek through those "reality windows" where I can isolate the subject from the backgound.

I guess anyone will have their own answers... mine are these three ones. The last, the main one.

Maybe, Andrea, but for many of my shoots, I cannot have a fair background, and some lenses make a better work "reducing its noise" than others.
Sadly, I cannot find the definitive lens... from shots I saw, the Sonnar 180 would be a nice addition to my bag, but its minimum focus distance scares me.
This saturday I did some tests with the 150 and the extension rings... the nš 2 makes a pretty nice job reducing the minimum distance keeping some focus margin (not a lot, but), but it's not enough.

I'm still wondering wich lenses I really need. Maybe something like 35-75-150 with a duplicator will fit all my needs, but then I remember the Sonnar, and my doubts raise again.

But again, thanks for your answers.

Just before we start an statistics war...

1- a film shooter will be more appealed with a CCD sensor than a CMOS, although, as has been said, today's CMOS sensors do their best to get the same colors than CCD's, but you must pay a price for those CCD colors, and it's the ISO
2- for landscapes you don't care about high ISO, much less if you use tripods, maybe your "sometimes portraits" can be more difficult to get in low light situations, BUT MF's defocus is far better than FF (I believe it, because I made some comparisons, although it maybe pure suggestion)
3- I've been said (I'm not a nikonist, although I have a D700 -with a bit of luck tomorrow I'll have not- ) there are a lot of differences between the 700 and the 850; I think you must read further about them before an upgrade: the 700 was the most praised sensor from all time Nikon, at least on my circles
4- why not to try to find a rent? Just for a weekend, rent a Z and feel it... maybe it will raise your purchase cost a bit (the rent's one), but if you don't like it, you will save a lot of money and frustration

I've had the K-5, the K-5IIs, I played with a K10D, a K-3, a K-1, and a lot of other K's, and I ended with an *istDS just because the sensor. Yes, I cannot shoot birds with it (my fault, probably), and I had to get used to noise when shooting concerts, but I did it pretty well, if you can life with "a bit" of noise
Big Mama

The results with the 645D are pretty better, I guess
Ster Wax i Pablo Sanpa

(both hand-held with manual focus lenses)

Do you really think you'll have worse lighting shooting landscapes?

But I always though my relationship with my cameras is more about "the touch" (how I feel them) than about "the statistics", so maybe I'm not the best one to give advice... except to NOT consider only the statistics.

I have an *istDS and moved to a Nikon D700 because they say it's the CMOS sensor that provides the colors closest to CCD's.
I sold the D700 and bought the 645D just because it has a CCD sensor. I didn't hesitate just because it. I love those sensors and how they render colors without any post-processing.
I had to learn when to NOT shoot, but it's not really a true handicap. I shot concerts in low light with it, and just at 800 ISO it performed well enough. Even some shots at 1600 were acceptable.

For landscapes, as has been said, it's capabilities are just more than enough, just check the galleries around (the infamous thread about "your medium format pictures" here, for example.

Wow, that was a full exhibition about the 120, thanks Rick "who spent a lot of time helping around" Denney. The foreground chaos is really bad, but I think I can guess the behaviour of the lens with those pictures...
I'll spend a bit of time with the 150 alone, as I spent two or three walks with the 75 alone, and I'll try to know if I can get used to its long minimal focus distance. I can try it with one of the extension rings to be able to shoot at closer distance, but as I'm trying to remove weight (and volume) from my little bag, I thought the 120 could be a nice choice.

@iCrop I thought it, but here in Europe the cheapest one is around €300, except one from Italia, and I had sad experiences with italian sellers :(
I'll try the 150 again, I loved it but its damn minimum focus distance.

Thanks to all you, guys.

Sounds logical: the larger the aperture, the larger field of depth, and more items/lines try to be "on focus". Yes, I know there are "scientific" terms for those things (confusing circles or whatever), but I need to think using easy words. These double-lines are the scarier things I'm afraid of.

@Sandy the boletus' background is not much worse than some of my "best" pictures (the ones I discard because the background)... the rose's one is smooth and -for my taste- very pleasant.

Vic "waiting for Rick" Lozano

PS: it's kinda fun those signatures... I wish you don't be offended if I use them to answer you, mate :)
