Yes the slower lenses are generally sharper than the faster lenses. This excludes things like bokeh etc and addresses just sharpness. Optical compromises have to be made to allow the faster/bigger aperture. At one point in the past Leica trumpeted that their updated Summilux f1.4 lens was finally almost as sharp as the f2.0 Summicron.

+1. Another vote for the DA 70 mm Limited lens. I have less experience with using zooms for portraits. The 70 mm lens is not much longer than your 50 mm lens so I am not sure if the difference may be worth if for you.

+1000. f1.7 is f1.7 is f1.7. 50 mm is 50 mm is 50 mm.
The sensor just does not occupy as big an area of the coverage/image circle of the lens.
To the OP: I am not kidding; play around with a large format camera if you have a chance. Stick a 300 mm lens (a 300 mm lens with a big enough image circle, of course, your standard 300 mm large format lens) on an 8x10 camera and play around with 8x10, 5x7 and 4x5 backs. Or play around with a 150 mm lens on a 4x5 camera and 4x5 film plus a roll film adapter back, which may be easier to find for most people. The exposure and DOF will not change though the field of view will change with the format, e.g. the 300 mm lens is a "normal" lens on 8x10 but is a "long" lens on 4x5. The concepts become very easy to understand. And large format can be great fun! :)
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Hany.

Which 2 lenses do you get with this kit? DA L with WR? Do they have quick shift ability?

The DA 21 mm. Sounds like you already have the short tele end covered. You can always add the 70 mm lens later. ;)

For those that have already received their silver K3s. Can you post pictures of it with black lenses, preferably DA limiteds, but any black lens will do.
Thanks in advance.

I realize people's experience with the K3 is limited and evolving, but I am also hoping to tap into knowledge of Pentax's other recent dSLRs. Do you turn on the default Lens Correction (Distortion, Lateral Chromatic, Peripheral Illumination Correction) and Noise reduction? I will mostly be shooting still subjects at low ISO. I shoot RAW+JPG; I often use the OOC JPG but like to have a RAW file in case I need to post-process the image significantly, in which case I do use the RAW file. I use Lightroom and very rarely Photoshop for filing and post-processing. For the next few days I will be using the DA 35 mm f2.8 Macro Limited (which I suspect does not need much correction) with the K3 but need advice regarding other lenses for the future.
BTW some past posts suggested that noise reduction is actually applied to the RAW image in the K5 II?! Is this true? I thought the RAW images are generally just a reflection of the sensor data.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Hany.

Lightroom 5 opens the K3 DNGs fine. I have not tried with PEFs or with Lightroom 4.4 which I also have.

I am hoping this would be doable with a firmware update, rather than waiting for a K3 II: The ability to reprogram the movie and liveview dedicated buttons to other functions more useful to us SLR diehards. I realize that video and liveview are here to stay (cringe), indeed even I probably use liveview maybe once a year in difficult shooting situations, however it would be useful to have the ability to reprogram the numerous buttons dedicated to those functions to allow more direct access to other functions. Movie via SLR buffs can keep things as is while others less interested in video can get back several useful buttons; liveview and movie mode can remain accessible via the info/menu screens for the rare occasions that they are needed.

My M series 50 mm f1.4 lens is in good working condition except for the rubber/plastic focusing ring rotating loosely, and independently of the underlying focusing helical; the helical itself is fine. It will focus appropriately if I pinch the ring tightly enough to turn the focusing mechanism.
I am thinking of glueing the focusing ring. My concern is that I do not want to glue the lens into a fixed position. The focusing ring appears to be made of plastic rather than rubber, and I seem unsure of how to take it off or loosen it enough to apply the glue.
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Hany.

I am assuming that the FA 31 mm Limited lens would be usable on the 1970s era MX body?
Any caveats or issues?
Thanks.

+1000!
Focal length is focal length is focal length! A 150 mm lens is the same whether the "sensor" behind it is an APSc digital sensor or an 8x10 sheet of film. Coverage and image circle may of course differ, and the 150 mm will be a telephoto on the APSc camera but a wide angle on your 8x10 camera, assuming it has sufficient coverage.
I actually do suggest going out with a large format camera and playing with one for a few days. It is a very instructive experience, and also great fun! I did shoot some film with my 8x10 a couple of weeks ago, maybe I should take it out next week.

I do wish to use a clear or UV filter on my DA Limited lenses, but do not want any vignetting when the hood is extended. I know many prefer not to use a filter but for the most part I do prefer it, though the hood does provide significant protection, which is the main reason for the filter for me. I intend to continue using the built in hoods.
Do I insert the filter "proximal" to the hood?
Any vignetting as a result?
I have all of the DA limited lenses (15, 21, 35, 40 and 70 mm) and have the 31 mm FA Limited lens.
Any input, feedback or suggestions welcome.

How about the 21 mm Limited as your all around, "walk around lens", and adding a longer macro lens later. Alternatively get the 35 mm f2.4 DA "plastic fantastic" lens. The 35 mm f2.8 Macro Limited is a very good lens but by being a macro is a bit of a compromise as a general purpose lens.

With film cameras I prefer the Olympus OM1 to the Pentax MX or K1000, indeed I prefer it to my Leica M6 or M3. It feels like a jewel in the hand and the viewfinder is superb though probably not the absolute brightest in the world. The lenses feel superb. You get used to the position of the shutter speed and aperture dials very quickly and will likely prefer those positions.
A very enthusiastic shout out for the Olympus OM1; it is a pity the did not maintain OM mount compatibility when shifting to digital. That is largely academic however since they have abandoned their dSLRs in favor of mirrorless.

I did break down yesterday and got Photoshop CC/Lightroom 5 (ver 5.2). Still no luck. Remember also that I can see the lens metadata fine with DNGs.

I just calculated the diagonal of 35 mm and extrapolated. It would be the "normal" lens for the format. 50 mm (if they were really 50 mm) was always slightly on the long side of normal. It was just convenient for Oskar Barnack dince they had that lens when designing the Leica.

I am just looking for the ability to search by lens metadata and to display it. I can do it with DNGs but not with JPGs. I am not trying to do lens corrections.

I have that lens in Canon EOS mount. I was never happy with my copy of that lens; it always seemed soft to me. As you said it is also far from unobtrusive! I would much rather get the FA 31 mm Limited than repeat that mistake.

I have the DA 21 mm limited, I love the lens but sometimes find it a bit too wide. Obviously I can crop but it is always nice to crop 'in the camera' while composing. I probably would have been happier with a 24 mm lens producing the field of view of a 35 mm lens on 35 mm film.
I recently acquired the DA 40 mm Limited. Very nice, but again maybe just a hair too long.
I find myself hankering for a 29 mm f2.0 lens. Small, and unobtrusive and with "Limited" quality; hence the f2.0 rather than faster. We really need a normal lens for APSc format sensors.
So who else is hankering for a compact DA Limited 29 mm f2.0 lens?
