An evening in Copenhagen

Thanks for looking and commenting; it's highly appreciated!

Actually, only the first and the last were taken through glass. The first one was taken from inside the office building out through the window, and the last one was a shop window display taken through the shop window.

So the other ones appearing as if they were perhaps taken through glass can only be because they may be out of focus, been taken at inappropriate apertures, thanks to haze in the air, or perhaps because I failed to do them justice during post-processing - and combinations of several of these factors are also likely.

When comparing the cheap kit lens and the new DA* lens I do feel that the DA*'s may require more precision on my part when choosing aperture and focus point. The kit lens is fairly forgiving but maybe the never lenses offer more control over field of depth and therefore also requires a deeper understanding of which settings to use to achieve the desired effect. But I could be wrong; I'm no expert at this.

OK, here are a few more from that evening in Copenhagen:

Will get the DA* 16-50 next week and look forward to bringing to Copenhagen in a couple of weeks.

I want for for low-light work; jazz clubs etc. I'll get the 16-50 (and 50-135) this or next week but will eventually want te extra two stops advantage of the 55's f1.4. Since it's a bit long (considering the x1.5 crop factor) I'd also eventually get something around 30mm in f1.4. That means the Sigma but I'll be postponing that purchase to see if Sigma evet gets around to making one where the HSM works with the K10D. But I'd love to see Pentax make their own DA* 30mm or 31mm f1.4 SDM - maybe in 5 years!

Is DA 14/2.8 next to DA* 16-50/2.8

I had the DA14 and a bunch of other DA primes (21, 40, and 70) and the DA14 showed the MOST CA of them all. I have heard others report this as well and I have gotten comments about the CA level in many of the pictures I have taken with it and published.

I would suggest that you wait and see if the DA* 16-50 works well enough for your cave photography. If you need wider you might as well consider the 12-24 zoom or perhaps even the Sigma 10-20, which seems to be fairly good - and is within the aperture range you mentioned.

Let's hope this holds true! I am #2 in queue for the 50-135 and #4 for the 16-50 but Pentax Scandinavia can't (yet) say how many will arrive in Sweden in the initial delivery. With a little luck I can have them for my trip to Denmark in week 35 where I'm hoping to meet up with other Pentaxians in Copenhagen!

Check this lens "review": Nikon 18-55mm

However, I just saw that there is a newer version of this marked "II", which he doesn't call "half an AF-S" as he did the older version, so Nikon may have added better motor in recent times...

The focusing motors in their cheaper consumer lenses are so weak that they have almost no practical function; this has been established in various reviews. It's a marketing trick to lure less knowledgable into thinking that they are getting a lot for small money.

Pentax better stick to upholding maximum quality (to a higher price) in their DA* series.

Dillema: Buy Primes or Zooms? - Long

Well, I bought the 14, 21, 40, and 70 mm primes when I picked up my K10D in December and went straight to Tenerife with my wife. I also had the 50-200 from before. I absolutely loved (and still love) the results I achieved with all these (mostly prime) lenses there.

However, constantly chaning lenses became an obstacle since I didn't want to force my wife to wait over and over again while a went over a particular scene fine times with five different lenses to get everything out of the opportunity before moving on.

Obviously, I chose to pass many opportunities by because I happened to have the wrong lens mounted - it was after all a vacation for the two of us, not my own dedicated photo safari.

Therefore, I have sold all my lenses to finance the two new DA*'s. I figure they will be at least as good as the DA 50-200 I sold - probably even better. I'm not saying they are better than primes but that isn't a requirement of mine; I just want something on par with or above what the DA 50-200 can do.

I rarely just go out for my self to take pictures; it's more on vacations with my wife or on business trips. In both cases I have to be able to work fairly fast since I don't want to be poor campany or simply have only limited time. So it's back to zooms for me.

Maybe, if I could afford it I would have kept the primes but I'm not sure it wouldn't have nagged me to own quality primes that almost never got used!

Don't know if this help at all but at least it's one out of many perspectives on your concerns. Good luck!

DA 50-200 street candids

Yes, street candids are tricky. I want to be very respectful and not "impose" on people - and that mean a loooong lens. I'm now completely lensless as I'm waiting for the new DA* lenses to arrive, but the 50-135 is much too short for this kind of photography. I'm considering the Sigma 135-400 for this in future!

Hi NaClH2O,

[QUOTE=NaClH2O;38928]Nice shots Lars, I have a soft spot in my heart for orchids. They are beautiful flowers, your shots did them justice. Looks like the DA 70 is an excellent lens for flower portraits. Thanks for sharing them. If you are interested, I have a whole bunch of orchid photos here:
SmugMug - saltwater : NYBG annual orchid show

You have a lot of great orchid shots there! It's a fantastic flower. When I get the new DA* lenses in a couple of months or so I'm going back to the orchid shop to see how these lenses work in that environment. That will also help me figure out their strengths and weaknesses (if any) compared to my old lenses.

I'm finding it more and more exciting and challanging to photograph people in the streets and have been using the DA 50-200 (and sometimes the DA 70). Now that I have sold ALL my lenses I'm looking forward to eventually buying an even longer lens and am considering the Sigma 135-400mm.

But first, here are some example of using the cheaper and lighter DA 50-200:

Just sold my entire lens collection and pre-ordered the new DA* 15-50 and 50-135 lenses. Won't arrive earlier that about the end of May or even later in June so once again I'm dusting off my trusty and good Optio 555 as I had to when I sold the DS and had to wait 3 months for the K10D! Nothing ever changes with Pentax at least with regards to their capacity to actually deliver the products they happily announce!

Thanks for commenting! Yepp, that little squirrel was the highlight of my day out. I've wanted to catch some wildlife since I first got into DSLR's but didn't capture much with the istDS that were good enough to keep. But the SR feature in the K10D helped me get sharp results with trembling fingers in the cold - and the squirrel helped by deciding to sit still and watch me in stead of running away like all his/her friends did! It makes me long for a longer zoom like the Sigma 135-400...

Thanks for your comments. Sounds like you should be considering the Sigma 10-20mm? A friend of mine has it and is very pleased with it. Otherwise, both the DA 14mm and DA 12-24mm are great but both are more expensive than the Sigma wide-angle zoom.

Thanks for looking. Well, the 14mm is good but big and heavy (compared to the pancakes). I don't get to use it that much but will make an effort to use it more often - perhaps when it isn't as cold! Can't swap lenses with gloves on! Brrbrrbrrbrr...

My little slideshow tool. Want it?

I have tried and dismissed all comercial and free slideshow features and separate tools. They are either too complex, scale my images to fit the screen, or both.

I want a simple tool with small footprint and no bells and whistles.

So I have put together a little Java hack that fits my needs perfectly - maybe yours too?

Why not try it? It's free!

jSlides Photo Gallery by Lars Ugleberg at pbase.com

It shows all images in the specified directory OR the specified zip-file. Showing pictures that are packages in a single zip-file was important to me because it helps me organize prepared presentations.

I have PE5 and have tried the beta the last few days. Lightroom is better in that it works directly on my DNG files, whereas I have to pass through the RAW converter dialog when opening my DNG's in PE5. However, I have found no way to get Lightroom to apply sharpening when exporting to JPEG's, which makes it useless for my needs. Better to go through more steps in PE5 but be able to save sharpened JPEG's for publication and viewing from the harddisk.

Received an e-mail yesterday from Pentax Scandinavia. They say that they expect to receive details about weight, filter size, price, and other details aroung the begining of April and that the two shorter zooms will be available by the end of April. It sound to me like it is very likely that the 60-250 will not be available sooner than mid-summer or early fall / autum. Pitty...
