I too just added a K-70 to my stable (K5 and K10 are my Pentax bodies). Picked up a little used body (1800 shutter count) and 18-135 for around US$300 . I wanted the 24mp sensor, wifi and adjustable rear screen. That it also has pixel shift , astrotracer , moire filter etc is just an added bonus. Should be just the ticket.

I bought used copies of the DA70 and DA15 . I'm considering shouting them a new body, lol. |

Outstanding. It's part photo, part painting. I hope my (new to me) DA 15 can draw in a similar way, albeit with the K5.

1st shot , K5 . Didn't quite get the focus point on, err, point . And yes, even at F/4 , up close, it matters, lol.
And this is a heavy cropped shot. |

I have an X-pro2 so I'm also comfortable with a fixed screen, per sé . And clearly I'm happy with fairly specific use cameras. But I'm thinking if I buy a new DSLR, I'd like the versatility of a more allround package. ---------- Post added 09-10-2023 at 04:04 PM ----------
And that's fine too . The K10 and K5 were flagships so they got the top plates. As has the K3 line. Just a shame (from my perspective) that they kept the fixed screen. I'd actually love a K3iii or K3m , but it's just a bit niche for me currently.
Edit - There's another factor. Locally, a k3iii will cost me around $3,000 . A new (old stock) K-70 can be found for around $700. So I guess there's 2300 reasons to not get too hung up on the top plate lcd, lol.

Right, so i've fixed (the shutter button was intermittent, seemingly fixed with some electrical contact cleaner worked into the assembly) the K5 and have been using it for the last couple of days. It's reminded me how much i love Pentax ergonomics, and OVF's. Which makes me want to buy an upgrade body, lol.
The problem is, I'd like a mix of features that apparently it's not possible to get. I'd like Wifi, it makes life so much easier. I'd like a tilting screen, makes things so much more practical. And i'd like a top plate display. The K3iii is an awesome camera, but fails on the tilting screen requirement. The K70/KF seem like great bargains but no top plate display, which I've found I've used a fair bit in the last few days on the K5.
I could go to a K1 (which i did own a few years back but sold after deciding it was bigger - and bigger lenses- than i'd ideally want) but i'd rather stick with the smaller aps-c bodies and (mainly) the DA limited prime lenses.
This is a problem. If Pentax had produced a tilting screen on the K-3 line, it would be a very easy decision.
But now I'm wondering if, as a compromise, i could buy a K-70 and with some money saved use one of the the FA limited primes, at least i could see the aperture setting at a glance. Oh dear, decisions, decisions...........

I also share a few other observations that many of the pictures seem a bit flat and not over "rich" for want of a better term. I suspect that Pentax have deliberately opted for a fairly neutral output to maximise the malleability of the files. I also suspect that this camera forces us to find suitable scenes and that we'll all grow into more natural and instinctive monochrome vision. But if I can tune my K5 JPEG tones and curves to good mono output, I'm sure it can also be done in the K3m ?
I turn 50 this year, and I'm considering a monochrome camera as a gift to myself. Whether that's a K3m , or a used Leica Type 246 (the only version close to my budget, lol) is the first decision to make.
Thank you to everyone for posting sample images for us non owners to view.

I'm now wondering if the DA 21 DA35/2.4 and DA 70 would be good matches for this sensor or if I'll need different / better lenses. It's a slippery slope, lol.

I like his overall musings that the appeal of the Monochrome shooting experience, for him, is tied in with the OVF rather than a WYSIWYG EVF . Let the camera take care of the metering and use the OVF dynamic range to see all the details in the shadows.
I think these cameras are as much about the creativity and desire as the actual technical output.

I totally want the Monochrome. Though I do wish it was a tilt LCD model. Really looking forward to some early reviews, very curious to see the tonality range and detail the sensor produces.

It's clearly just a continuation of the k-70 with supply-driven changes to a few internal components and a better LCD . I'm not sure anyone is trying to paint it as a new design or similar.
I want to buy a new Pentax aps-c dslr , my K-5 shutter button is failing and the repair cost isn't terribly justifiable. I'd love to buy a k3iii but I'd prefer a non-fixed LCD for more general use. That's been the sticking point for me. K-70's are getting hard to find, at least the KF answers that problem. Whether I'll wait for a true new model remains to be seen.

I'm just pleased that Ricoh is continuing to release new Pentax Dslr's. An updated k-70 would interest me.

If they'd put an adjustable screen on this thing, it'd be the perfect all-purpose camera imo. But it's omission makes it an even more specialised camera than Dslr's have tended to become. That's going to show up in reviews, whether we like it or not. Just like many reviews of the Fuji Xpro line mention its inherent compromises.
I do know this: the fixed screen is the sole hesitation i have buying a K3iii . When I bought my k10 / K5 back in the day, i didn't give it a thought. But times move and now the k70 / KP probably suit my daily uses better, but the k3iii would be awesome for sports. I'm sorely tempted, but can't pull the trigger.

Many many years ago, my K10 was in a bag of stolen camera gear. I missed it badly, but i moved on to other bodies and systems.
Well, i found one a few weeks back in a used camera store, a bit battered, a bit sticky, a crappy lens , a failing battery and no charger. But on a whim, i bought it.
Bolted the 35mm/2.4 to the front and shot a couple of jpegs. It's a nothing shot, but I'm back in the K10D / CCD club! |
