Item Description
Up for sale is my DA 70mm Limited purchased not far over 12 months ago. I'm selling because I recently came across a deal on the FA 77 that I couldn't pass up. This DA 70mm certainly lives up to its reputation of being super-sharp wide open. The lens comes with original packaging, front and rear caps, documentation and leather lens pouch. Payment via paypal or band transfer welcome.

The glass is in excellent condition with very few dust spots. There is a strange reflection (3mmx2mm) on the very edge of one of the rear elements which almost looks like the glass has been shaved. This reflection is only visible through the front of the lens and only when held at a certain angle to a bright light. After over a year of yes I can confidently say that this doesn't affect optical performance at all even when testing f/22.

The exterior of the lens is in good condition with a few cosmetic marks from use. There are a few small paint-chips/scratches on the right hand side of the distance scale, 1 near the bottom right corner of the opening for the distance scale with the rest on the groves in the focus ring. There are also 2 very fine scratches leading left from the infinity mark on the distance scale.

Poll: Why did you buy a Pentax DSLR?

To begin with the price of K100D got me interested, after reading reviews and doing a bit of research I was sold on in-body SR and the backwards compatibility for lenses.

In general Pentax delivers better value for money in my opinion the Canon, Nikon or Sony, not to mention that Pentax primes are exceptionally good.

Your right, four feet is plenty long enough, it seems a bit odd that people would be complaining about the length. Thanks :)

TR Power Pack III cable question

I've done a bit of reading up on the TR Power Pack and most common complaint is that the cable can be too short. Is it possible to simply buy a longer cable or does the power pack and AF540 have proprietary plugs?

Thanks

Is the K7 a significant improvement over the K20D?

Thanks for the replies. In general the only thing I've found occasionally frustrating with the K20D is the low-light AF speed (nothing wrong with accuracy though). I have no problems getting the shot with it or my K100D for that matter.

Since I only have two assignments between now and March I might just wait it out and see how things pan out.

You guys might remember my thread a few months back when I was looking for a second body. I've just done a paid shoot for some advertising so my budget is going to stretch much further than what I expected.

My question is how much of an improvement is the K7 over the K20D in real-world use? I'm more interested in things like exposure, white-balance, AF speed + accuracy and general usability rather than fancy features like video.

I'll be either going with a second K20D or a K7 and my existing K20D.

Thanks

Is Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 a good lens?

As the new owner of Venturi's lens I can verify it's a keeper. Great overall IQ with stunning sharpness for a zoom. Build quality isn't anything special but it's very solid with tight tolerances, if it was metal I would be a DA*.

Most Useful Prime Lens.

The FA50 is a great lens for the price, there's no reason not to have especially if you shoot portraits or lots of low light, it's the cheapest way to get f/1.4 with AF.

As far as the 70 vs 77 debate goes, both have exceptional build and IQ. The 70 has quick shift and is more compact, it's sharpness wide open matches the 77s when stopped down to the same aperture (f/2.4). The FA77 is more expensive but it's about 2/3rds of a stop quicker and has an aperture ring (important if you use old film bodies).

Below 50mm the FA31 is without a doubt the best in terms of IQ and build unless you shoot macro. If so you should consider the DA35 but at f/2.8 it's not exactly fast. Another option is the FA35 which is nearly as fast as the FA31 and performs well wide open. Build quality is similar to the FA50. Personally I'd find both the DA40 and FA43 too close to the 50mm.

Good series, no.4 is definitely the pick of the bunch. You've nailed the timing on those shots which is probably the hardest thing.

I would try getting down lower if possible next time, it would give a greater perspective of the height of the jump.

Decision Sigma 70 -200 or Pentax SMC FA*star 80-200mm/f2.8 ED IF Lens

I own the oldest version of the Sigma (1.8m minimum focusing distance with an aperture ring and no digital coatings). It's constructed mainly of metal, overall the build is very solid.

I haven't found a direct comparison as far as IQ goes but photozone have reviewed both. The Sigma was reviewed on a Canon so you can't compare the actual MTF scores but you can still get a general idea of how each lens performs.

Sigma 70-200 EX DG (same optical construction as the non-DG version)
Sigma AF 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO HSM DG - Lab Test Report / Review

Pentax FA* 80-200
Pentax SMC-FA* 80-200mm f/2.8 [IF] ED - Review / Lab Test Report

Judging by those charts the Sigma has the edge at the wide-end with things pretty even in the middle. The Pentax beats the Sigma at 200mm. The Sigma performs more evenly across the whole frames wide-open at all focal lengths while with the FA* there is a bigger difference between centre and corner sharpness.

The above pretty much mirrors my own experience with the Sigma, up 180mm it's very sharp wide-open, not quite so at 200mm but definitely still very usable.

50mm - what's the appeal?
Posted By nobbsie
Replies: 51

In a nutshell:

- speed, f/1.4 is 3 to 4 stops quicker than any consumer "standard" zoom.
- affordability, compared to other sub f/2 lenses the 50mm is usually the cheapest.
- "normal" focal length which results in a perspective similar to what we see through our own eyes.

Faster lenses allow for more creativity through and pinpoint focus and give you my freedom to shoot in low-light. In general they're also extremely sharp stopped down.

why don't you like the 50-135mm lens for wedding photography?
Posted By nobbsie

I've not used the 50-135 myself but I believe it would be a wonderful lens for weddings. It's an exceptional performer by all accounts.

Pros:
- fast
- great IQ at all focal lengths
- perfect zoom range for portraits
- weather sealing
- 75-200mm equivilent on digital
- perfect match fo the DA* 16-50

Cons:
- doesn't have as much reach as a 70-200 (105-300mm eqivilent on digital)

If you don't need the extra reach or have it covered with another lens then it's a no-brainer.

My thoughts exactly, the tilting was the first thing I noticed when I got them up on my computer, funny thing is that I hardly ever do normally so it must have been nerves. I'll be paying a fair bit of attention to not tilting next time.

Thanks mate, luckily I was asked about 8 months before the wedding so I had plenty of time to prepare. I spent days looking through portfolios to get ideas on setting up the shots, PP and of course keeping exposure under control.
